historical villa, 4 bedrooms, terraces, garden, near the sea, wifi
Situated on a stretch of coast between Catania and Taormina, proudly surveying its estate from the crest of a hill is Villa Bagolaro, an 18th Century country house in a stunning and perfectly peaceful setting between the sea and Mount Etna. Indoor and outdoor living combine seamlessly due to the bright and welcoming rooms and their communication with the terraces. It would be difficult to ask for a more delightful setting. The living areas and bedrooms of Villa Bagolaro are all on one floor (the first floor). Villa Bagolaro consists of 4 bedrooms, a bathroom with shower, small tub, bidet and toilet, a large living area with fireplace and a double sofa bed, another living area with a fireplace, a kitchen with wood oven and next to it a dining room with dining table. Outside there is also a terrace with seating, deckchairs, extra toilet (in the laundry room), a second shower and a barbecue. The villa has wifi!
Because of the presence of 2 fireplaces, the house offers a pleasant stay also during the few cold weeks of the short Sicilian winter.
The Area: Villa Bagolaro is an excellent base from which to explore Mount Etna and its surroundings. The villages of Etna, such as Trecastagni, Zafferana Etnea e Randazzo, are famous for their ancient lava flows, the architecture of their seventeenth century churches, their delicious local produce and the hospitality of the villagers. Situated 700 metres above sea level, they are a favourite retreat of the city dwellers who, in summer are in search of cool, fresh air, while in winter are in search of snow for skiing. Few people are aware that Etna is a popular location for skiers in winter. On some glorious days in winter, it’s even possible to ski the frozen slopes in the morning enjoying a wonderful panoramic view of the Mediterranean, and then, the same afternoon, go and sunbathe on the beaches below!

Romantic old farmhouse between Taormina - Catania
This is an old farmhouse with lots of history and character, suitable for 1-2 families. So do not expect kitchen, furniture etc. it to be at most modern standards - this is reflected in the relatively lower rental price.
We found the house overall to be (sufficiently) clean and very comfortable (be aware that Mt. Etna may dust the terraces and garden furniture at any time). All the equipment, including WIFI is functional and as described. Contrary to description there actually is a second WC and a second (outdoor) shower. The property is rather big, with lots of space for everyone. The manager is always available when needed, flexible and very helpful.
The farm is located right between Taormina and Catania, ideal for trips to either city, to the Etna or even further down to Syracuse.
For grocery-shopping we recommend the next village north (Carruba, 3 mins.). For swimming the beaches of Cottone and San Marco (20 mins. north).
Overall we enjoyed our stay very much. -1 star because of the early morning noise from the neighbouring farm (including rifle shooting at 7 a.m.).
BIG PLUS however: your own fig tree on the premises, with the invitation to harvest as you can :-)
Villa with splendid views and nostalgic charm
The villa is an old family home and is situated within a lemon orchard. It has fabulous views to Etna and the sea, with a small stony beach, not crowded, in 1 km distance.
There is a nostalgic touch on almost everything in the villa, a thing I really enjoyed. The surroundig ground has something of an enchanted garden with many lovely places. The villa is huge, so it could house at least two families for holidays. There is sufficient equipment, though only one bathroom.
Our host Mr Grassi was very kind and helpful. He was on the spot if needed.
There is one minus for people who like to sleep in and need tranquility because the neighbouring plant nursery is busy in the early morning and is in a hearing distance.
I would strongly recommend this place to everyone who wants to inhale the atmosphere of Sicily in a place away from the tourist hustle an bustle, but in a good starting point to explore the northeast of the island including Etna.
A house in a citrus grove with a sense of history in
We loved this house. It was exactly as described. A historic and spacious villa that had the atmosphere of a much loved family home surrounded by a large garden full of lemon and orange trees and many flowering plants. If you are looking for high specification bathrooms and kitchens and modern furniture it probably isn't for you but if you love a sense of history along with comfortable beds and sofas, ravishing views of Etna behind and the Ionian sea in front from glorious tiled terraces which surround the house on all sides, it will suit you well. Location is interesting with plenty of places to visit though you will need a car. A stony volcanic beach is close by where swimming is great when not rough, though it's probably not a good beach for small children. The Grassis made us feel very welcome and were very helpful. There is a very busy working nursery next door, full of extraordinary plants; we did not find this a problem though. The villa is perfectly private.
The only change we would have made was to have had a little local information provided but as the wifi was excellent we managed fine. All in all a wonderful holiday.
Lovely large old villa in great location.
This lovely big old villa is in a great location and is full of character with its doors/windows on every side of the property and the high ceilings. There's the magnificent views of the dominant, smoking Mount Etna to the rear of the property and views of the sea from the front + the huge gardens with lots of lemon and orange trees surrounding the place. It turned a little chilly at night (Mid-March) but there was a wood burning fire and lots of wood supplied so we made good use of that. The owner,Luigi, was very friendly and helpful and spoke quite good English. We realised we had forgotten our electrical plug adaptors and texted him to ask where we could buy some from as we couldn't find any in the supermarket or shops. He asked how many we needed and said he would bring some over to us(I think he lives about 8 miles away). He duly arrived with 2 adaptors and wouldn't accept payment so we said we'd leave them at the end of our stay, in case someone else had the same issue. Good WiFi too. Excellent drives up Etna, especially the south side. Quite a lot of snow up there but the roads were kept perfectly clear. Also good places to visit was Taormina and Syracusa + a few nice villages around. Good supermarket 5 mins drive away. Also a new cafe had just opened up in the village(Caruba) which did lovely ice cream. Overall a very enjoyable holiday in a lovely place. Recommend.
We are truly glad to read that you enjoyed Villa Bagolaro. This villa is a wonderful setting all year round.
country house with an unforgettable ambiance
Not the cleanest place, but very large, full of history, high ceilings, Great garden with citrus trees, sea view at the front, etna view at the rear. We were lucky to see an active etna with lava and fire at night and ash particles on the table on the terrace in the morning. It is a Great place to stay a week, it Will stay in your memories because of the age of the house and its special location.
torneremo in poco tempo
Villa Bagolaro is an excellent base from which to explore eastern Sicily. The villa lies halfway between Catania and Taormina and just seven kilometres from Acireale (a pretty little city, built on a plateau of lava, that is known for its Baroque churches). Gardini Naxos, a seaside resort with beautiful sandy beaches, is just 25 kilometres from Villa Bagolaro. Beside it we find Taormina ‘the pearl of the Mediterranean’ and the most exclusive seaside resort in Sicily. Its ancient Greek theatre is world famous for its extraordinary panoramic views. Santa Maria la Scala and Aci Trezza are pleasant seaside villages near Villa Bagolaro. In the village Santa Tecla, a few kilometres from Praiola, is the renown, but quiet cheap, fish restaurant “Da Lorenzo”. 2 km from Villa Bagolaro is the big supermarket 'Iper'. Also 2 km from the house is Carubba, a town, with several shops and squares.
