A private dock, for use by renters only, is a place where you can either dock your personal watercraft, use the canoe or fishing kayak provided, or a pontoon can be rented from nearby Fish Springs Marina or Lake Shore Marina. The Watauga River flows into Lake Watauga just a few hundred yards from Catfish Cottage which enables adventurers to kayak or canoe up the river for quite a distance. As of 6/18, the lake is a little higher than it's normal summer level which allows canoers/kayakers to go completely up the Watauga River to the rapids! The water level is controlled by the TVA (Tennessee Valley Auhority). The depth around our dock is about 15' at full pool. Fishing is great in Lake Watauga, and a license, if needed, is obtainable less than two miles away at Dry Run Grocery and Diner. They are also the closest for getting those "forgot to get" items. Ready for another adventure? Walk, hike, bike or drive just a little over a mile away to the Lake Watauga Winery which is in an old restored schoolhouse and hear Linda tell the story of all the ghosts they have encountered since they bought the property! From Mountain City, it's another 17 miles to the Virginia Creeper Trail in Damascus, VA traveling on Hwy. 91 or in the opposite direction, you can travel to Boone or Blowing Rock, NC on Hwy. 421 from Mtn. City. Or, leaving the cottage and going through Prioneer Landing to Hwy. 321, it's 16 miles to the outskirts of Boone and then on to Linville, Blowing Rock, etc. The Bristol Race Track is about 40 miles from the cottage. About Patricia or George Heinemann
We are an older couple who fell in love with the location of Catfish Cottage. We kept the name that was on the cottage, but almost everything else has been updated (totally inside).
Patricia or George Heinemann purchased this Cottage in 2015

What makes this Cottage unique
It is at the intersection of the Watauga River which flows from Boone, NC and the lake. In the winter, out front of the cottage is a natural spring which when the lake is iced over, there is a circle of unfrozen water where the spring is. Kayaking and/or canoeing up the river is an adventure or just going for an evening canoe ride out in the lake. Pontoon, kayak and jet ski rentals are available from either Fish Spring Marina or Lake Shore Marina in Butler, TN

Very clean, great amenities in a wonderful location
Photos online didn’t do the home justice. The view of the mountains from the front porch and dock were priceless. Being within a 30 minute paddle of river rapids and a nice, sandy beach was an unexpected bonus. The home itself is very small, but very well done. You’ll spend most of your time out on the porch or in the water, so having comfortable sleeping and a fully equipped, modern kitchen is what you need inside. Catfish Cottage delivered there, and the owners are attentive and offer great advice to make the best of your visit. I suggest wine tasting at Watauga Lake Winery (wood fired pizza on Saturdays). Also, a drive to Shirley’s Restaurant for family style country cooking and bluegrass music adds some great local flavor.
George and I are always pleased to have guests such as
this family. They were so respectful of the property.
We are open to sharing information about the area so that our guests can choose what best fits into their vacation time.
We have used HomeAway to vacation many times over the years and this was the best experience we have had. This cabin is absolutely beautiful. Pat and George thought of every detail. They went above and beyond to help us find a place to launch our boat and even offered to help us the day we got there. It is perfect for a couple to getaway from it all. We really enjoyed canoeing up the river. We saw a bald eagle, and a fawn bathing in the river. This cottage is up in a cove and there isn't a lot of boat traffic. It is very quite and peaceful. We are looking to buy our own place on the lake but if we don't we will definitely be going back. Plus it has it's own boat dock which was very nice for us to be able to have so we could just walk right down and jump on our boat and be off in a manner of minutes.
Everything was perfect as always!!
The owners are extremely nice, the weather was gorgeous Saturday and the lake was beautiful. The cabin was perfect!
This place is awesome. We will be back.
Huge deck, the canoe was nice, water was beautiful, the kitchen has good cooking tools and pots and pans and the cottage is very clean.
We all had a relaxing week at the Catfish Cottage. The cottage was clean and had everything you’d need. Watching the hummingbirds and relaxing out on the porch was wonderful.
Beautiful cabin with a beautiful view.
We spent most of our time on the porch or out on the dock. The inside was beautifully decorated, but outside the view was spectacular.
We glad you took the time to relax and also visit some of the nearby
restaurants and meet some of the locals who are always welcoming.
Thank you, again, for choosing Catfish Cottage for your getaway.
