Overview

About the property

1 bedroom, 1 bath close to historical sights and recreational parks

This Cottage is a 1300 square foot small home in the community of Evergreen and a part of Evergreen Lavender Farm. It is a 25 minute drive for those visiting the Farmville area: Longwood University, Hampden Sydney College, Green Front Furniture, or High Bridge Trail State Park. It is a 30 minute drive to Lynchburg: Lynchburg College, Liberty University, Randolph College, and the Bluffwalk. The Cottage is 4 miles away with the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, the American Civil War Museum, James River State Park and Holliday Lake State Park. It is within an hour and a half to Charlottesville, Richmond, and Petersburg.

Comfort and rustic casual elegance would describe the décor of this house with crocheted quilts, and comfortable chairs & sofa to sit back and relax. The home has a mix of vintage and country casualness. You will feel at home.

The circa 1915 cottage features one large bedroom, one bathroom, living room, dining room, kitchen, and laundry room.

The bedroom features 2 queen size beds, a cedar cabinet, a vintage waterfall chest of drawers, and is carpeted. Sheets and blankets are provided.

The living area is an open, great room with a queen sleeper sofa, a Lazy Boy recliner and other chairs. The wainscoting is original to the house. There is a propane gas heater for added coziness on chilly nights. Cable TV, DVD, and WIFI are provided.

The kitchen has a small table for 2 and is equipped with utensils, towels, cookware, and appliances. The kitchen adjoins to the dining room which has a table that seats 6.

There is a full bathroom with a tub/shower.

The Cottage is a part of Evergreen Lavender Farm. During the lavender season, mid-May to early July, the farm is open to the public and guests are invited to participate in the harvesting, crafting, and distilling of lavender. Guests may pick from the vegetable garden to add to their meals. The Norfolk and Southern train line cuts through Evergreen on its way to Petersburg and Richmond. Trains run through several times a day/night. We love having the train in our community; it brings a nostalgic feel. We hope you will, too. The Cottage makes a great getaway for one or two couples. Children are welcome, but supervision is necessary with a pond located in the back of the property, an active RR track across the road, and farm animals.

Caretakers occasionally may come on the property to take care of the yard.

The home is a part of the farm and sits on 10 acres.

Why Bonnie Swanson chose Central Virginia

Evergreen Lavender Farm is a family owned business located in the rural community of Evergreen in Appomattox County, Virginia. In 2009, the farm began to transition from cut flower production to field grown lavender. The lavender harvested is used for our handmade sachets, eye pillows, lotions, and soaps.

What makes this cottage unique

Lavender is not our only horticultural component, for there are several flower gardens to see. The farm offers scheduled workshops for successful planting of lavender, creating a lavender wreath, and making your own products. We have many plans and are hopeful that visitors will discover Evergreen Lavender Farm as a relaxing, beautiful, and educational experience.

Just what I needed for the week

  • 4 of 5

In Evergreen for the week to help with a church construction project that ended up being only 2 houses away! Super convenient for what I was in the area to do. Larger house on the inside than the pictures made it appear. Bonnie was so easy to work with and thought of everything. House was well stocked and clean. There was an issue with the well which forced us to use bottled water for drinking and cooking but Bonnie provided plenty of bottled water for the week. That is the only reason I rated the cottage a 4/5. The train is very close to the house but I kind of liked seeing and hearing the trains pass by. Just the rumble of the train, no need for whistles here as the roads pass under the tracks so you never have to wait for the train to pass by. Easy parking in driveway for several cars.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your honest review. People are always surprised when they view the interior of the cottage; it does look smaller on the outside than on the inside! The water situation has been rectified, just a week or so too late after your visit. Thank you for being a gracious guest! We love the train, too.

We were staying in this house to attend our daughters graduation from Longwood University. The owner is extremely easy to communicate with and was very accommodating. The cottage is lovely, charming and full of character it was more than we expected. The house was miticulously clean and stock with supplies above and beyond our expectations. Bonnie gave us a private tour of the lavender farm and provided some of her handmade products for our use. There was six adults in our party and we all experienced a wonderful time full of memories and joy. I would highly recommend this house to anyone looking to stay in Evergreen area. This house is much larger than the pictures and we did not experience any issues.

Bonnie Thank you for sharing your cottage with our family. We will always remember the great times and priceless memories we experienced there.

Civil War history surrounds The Cottage at Evergreen Lavender Farm. The American Civil War Museum and Appomattox Court House National Historical Park are within 15 minutes of the cottage. In Appomattox, Baine's Books and Coffee offers delicious coffee drinks, books, music, and more. There are several vintage and antique shops in the town. The town offers several restaurants to choose from and there is live theater with The Court House Theater and Wolfbane Productions. Going west a half an hour is the city of Lynchburg with plenty of restaurants, movies, shopping, and entertainment. Going east for 25 minutes is Farmville which has Longwood University, Green Front Furniture and High Bridge Trail and painting and clay workshops, dining, and music. Guests can stay on the farm and be a part of our daily operations, especially during the lavender season from mid-May into July. Our annual lavender festival is the third Saturday in June with music, food, wine, and lavender. Check out www.evergreenlavender.com for more information or on facebook.
