Abiquiu house description

Full luxury in breathtaking natural beauty. Remote and private. So quiet you can hear your heart beat. At night, no city lights disturb your view of the star-studded sky.

From this 1,475 square foot Casita, you'll enjoy panoramic 360-degree views: Abiquiu Lake, miles of mesas, rolling hills, and the magnificent red cliffs surrounding the famous Ghost Ranch. To the south you'll see the 10,000-foot mountain known as El Pedernal, which Georgia O'Keefe made famous in her paintings, along with much of the near landscape.

This is a new Casita, built in 2008, and designed by a local architect in a southwestern yet modern style. It's fully furnished for comfort. The kitchen has stainless steel appliances, including a Bosch gas stove with heavy gauge grills for those who really love to cook.

Check out the Master bathroom: you can choose between a slate shower or a deep soaking tub to soothe your body after an invigorating hike in the nearby Jemez Mountains. Besides the 2 bedrooms with Queen beds, there is a queen bed sofa in the Great Room with spectacular views of the lake and Ghost ranch.

NOTE: JAN 3 thru FEB 11th SPECIAL--$175/NIGHT

What can be added to the previous glowing reviews of this wonderful vacation place! After leaving the crowds and noise of the city, this was the perfect place to end our anniversary getaway. If you are looking for perfect solitude, sweeping vistas of mesas, distant mountain ranges, blue-green lakes, and nothing but the relaxing sounds of the breezes passing by, an occasional bird, and (during this time of year) the rumble of distant thunder in the afternoons, this is the place! We would have simply stayed here quite a bit longer but there were others coming after us of course... The owners of Vista de Lago were very helpful in providing us with a list of places to visit in the area, but after arriving here, we simply decided to make this our home for 3 days and take full advantage of everything it had to offer. There is a nice flat screen TV and Blu-Ray player, but why would one want to use any of these? Just look out the windows! The views are breathtaking, and each time of day, from dawn, through noon and evening time, presents an entirely different mood. There is really no reason to go anywhere else, if magnificent scenery, beautiful skies, ultra comfort and solitude is what you are seeking. If side trips are a must, I would suggest hiking over at Chost Ranch (which you can see nestled in the pink and red cliffs due north from Vista), as well as a tour through their nice museums, and a walk around the labyrinth. The 2 hour hike to the top of the Chimney Rock trail is worth the view and the workout--plan for early morning or later afternoon if it is hot. And of course the Abiquiu Inn for lunch, dinner, or just a refreshing glass of rosemary lemonade! Thanks to Larry and Laurie for sharing their beautiful site...we hope to return next year.

My mother and I came to Abiquiu to attend a writing retreat at Ghost Ranch. We were looking for accommodations that encompassed the environment but had more amenities than Ghost Ranch offers. Boy, did we find it. Superlative quiet and peace to support the reason we came. How wonderful to be in a home that is truly away from it all in the bustle of today's world. Today we sit listening to the birds with the lake below us and mountains in the distance. It feels like you can see forever from here. it's euphoric. Don't miss it if you get the chance. Thanks Larry for all of the directions and the great stewardship to get us here. You were easy to work with and we are humbly grateful to have been in your home.

Our three night stay was exceptional. The reservation process was a breeze and the owner sent all of the pertinent information two weeks in advance as promised. The directions were perfect and it is a good thing because reaching the casita is quite the challenge! You will want to be well provisioned with food and supplies upon your arrival (and arrive before dark!) as it is a long haul to civilization. The casita is in a breathtaking setting. The pictures do not do it justice. I have never been to a more quiet and peaceful place on earth. If you are seeking a getaway from the hectic pace of life, look no further! You will feel as if you are alone in the world! The home is lovely and is well stocked with everything you can possibly need. The caretaker stopped by to see if there was anything we needed. We only left the casita once and were all the better for it. We did have a soaking ran and bit of snow which resulted in a large deal of mud. We were glad we were driving an AWD vehicle. If peace, solitude and beauty are what you seek, I would highly recommend Vista De Lago as it will become your dream destination. We will certainly return.

We came down from Denver for a long weekend, had a terrific time! The house is wonderfully remote and extremely peaceful. The house is approximately 35 minutes from the Abiquiu Inn and within easy distance to Taos or Santa Fe for day trips. Can't wait to return!

This is a fantastic destination if you are looking to get away from it all, and do it in style! Larry couldn't have been nicer and more helpful and this home has everything you could need to spend weeks here. There was not one item that we needed during our stay that wasn't there in the house at our disposal. The setting is spectacular-every morning that I walked out into the living room to enjoy the sunrise, I had the feeling that I was in a spaceship, hovering just above the beautiful landscape. My husband thought that was very funny, but seriously, the beauty took my breath away every time I walked into that room. This is not the place to stay if you want to have restaurants and shops within a few minutes-this is the place to stay if you enjoy utter silence, breathtaking views and hiking right out your door. My husband and I were there for 11 nights and it was absolutely perfect.

THANKSGIVING, 2013 Our trip to Vista de Lago, Abiquiu resulted in a grand entrance – in the snow! Awesome! We were instantly transported from Southern California into a winter wonderland of magnificent red rock landscapes and endless valleys seemingly dusted in sparkling special winter effects, just for us. The casita itself was beautiful, with tasteful artwork and an uncluttered but cozy décor, and sparklingly clean. In the clear morning, the view, an almost 270° panorama of the lake and hills, was outstanding. We were amazed to see Cerro Pedernal rise out of the mist, hidden one minute, then majestically appearing like the lost village of Brigadoon. As a native-born Scot, I have always had a fascination with the American west, and this little spot of heaven on a mesa fulfilled all my fantasies. We, my husband, daughter and her husband, along with my nephew and his wife, spent a wonderful Thanksgiving Day at Vista de Lago. Although our other children couldn’t join us, we kept them informed via the internet of our activities during our stay at the casita. We went to the Ghost Ranch, Santa Fe, The Monastery of Christ of the Desert, and Taos, to name a few. One of the highlights of our stay at the casita was visiting Echo Amphitheater, about ten miles from the casita. There we saw a fascinating sky-fight between two black crows and a lone bald eagle. We could see that the eagle was attempting to rob the crows’ nest of its eggs. It was three minutes of wonder for us! We heard the coyotes each morning, and listened to the woodpeckers hammer away at their special tree branch. My daughter and her husband hiked down to the lake, and reported that it was a beautiful sight. Perhaps not many folks want to venture to northern New Mexico in the winter, but I can attest to the special beauty that winter holds there. All in all, we had a wonderful time at Vista de Lago, thanks to the generosity of our hosts, Larry and Laurie, who provided this little gem of a place. Our Thanksgiving was absolutely lovely, and I would encourage others to visit Vista de Lago at this special time of the year. Magical.

Owner response: Yeah, the winters are a real treat, and I'm so glad that you saw the eagles in the area...they are magnificent!!! We would be honored to have you back anytime.

We had 2 couples stay in this home for a week and found everything exceptionally clean accommodating. The views are breathtaking. We visited Ghost Ranch a couple times, hiked around the home, Plaza Blanca, Echo Amphitheater, Poshuouiuge Ruins, Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Taos and many others. We still had time to enjoy the home, cook meals and watch movies. The owners are very pleasant and helpful and we would absolutely recommend to stay here for a relaxing vacation! Bring wine and groceries up with you :)

Wonderful stay, lovely home with absolutely everything we needed. Thank you for thinking of everything. Plenty of space, convenient location, all the amenities, and great kitchen. Beds were very comfortable, plenty of comfortable seating in den, gas stove was great, everything was extremely clean, and with the casita and contents so well maintained, we had a very pleasant and relaxing vacation We loved your Casita – great character with large windows to experience the beautiful surroundings, nature at its finest and you can enjoy it all with complete privacy. With to die for views from every room you will never miss a sun rise or sun set. Hiking at Ghost Ranch was amazing! My husband and I took over 2000 pictures in the 10 days we were there. Why the Owner Chose Abiquiu:
My wife and I have been visiting Northern New Mexico for almost 30 years. The skies, the red rocks, the mesas, the food, the locals, the hiking, the skiing…. are all so inviting. Finally, we decided that it was time to buy a place, not only to use as a getaway for ourselves, but for friends and family alike. We also want to introduce others to Abiquiu and Northern NM, so we’ve decided to make this a vacation getaway for you as well. We know you’ll be enchanted by NM as we have been.
