This Extraordinary Historic Detached Mansion is located in Dupont/Logan Circle areas in the Middle of the City. Approximately 5000+ SF, The former Rectory of St. Augustine's Church and the original site of a Civil War Hospital is one of the few remaining large downtown estates that have not been converted to condominiums! It is located directly across the street from the World-renowned Masonic Temple with spectacular views of the rear gardens and its magnificent Pillars lit at night. A wonderful tour is offered weekdays!! The Old Mansard Bishops house and Convent buildings next door still retain the architecture of the period, and are quite beautiful. It is a very short distance to the White House, just one block to 16th Street the 'Avenue of the Presidents', and a stroll to the downtown Business District and Major Monuments. And for those looking for DC'S newest and hottest restaurants and clubs, the Rectory is just a couple of blocks away to the must-go and trendy 14th Street corridor.
Being a detached structure this home offers sun filled rooms and quiet visits with new high end thermo-pane windows through-out. This home has been decorated with attention to the buildings beginnings, a crosscut travertine floor has been laid and the original plaster wainscoting has been hand painted by a local artist to match all the way to the third floor. The first floor is spacious and covered in original woodwork of chestnut wainscoting and old world pine. Please notice in our sites photo's of the original great doors to the dining room and den. The original closets throughout the home were constructed of cedar wood to preserve the woolen frocks of the monks and dignitaries. The original stained glass in the hallways leading up through the home still retain some of the original stained glass with the the letter 'A' for the church she was built for, St. Augustin! The original church is still standing just up the street, and worth a tour of her magnificent stained glass and architecture!
The kitchen has a sun filled breakfast area, again with lots of windows. Also Commercial grade appliances, lots of cooking utensils and serving platters, and the cupboards are full of glassware, dishes, and utensils.
The family room is in the rear of the home with double French doors to the rear trumpet vine covered patio for grilling. This room boasts wooden cross-beamed ceilings, yet more wood wainscoting and moldings, and a working fireplace. Please feel free to use the large flat screen TV while lounging on the comfortable leather sofa's…very comfy room!!
Also on the main floor is a private den that doubles as an extra bedroom on the main floor. There is also a full bathroom with shower on the main floor. This is ideal if you have a guest that has troubles with stairs.
The main living room is a bit more formal with rich curtains at the bay window, comfortable yet elegant seating and a wonderful area to gather for cocktails! Just across the hall find the den with a pull out leather sofa and antique writing desk. The dining room may be extended into this room by opening the massive wooden by-fold doors. An additional table is available. Lest we forget, there is a full bath/powder room on this floor and plenty of coat closet space!
Upstairs, on the second floor you will find a flower balcony looking to the Mason's temple. We have often seen the presidential entourage from this spot and wave accordingly? The enormous master bedroom is en suite with a separate shower and large soaking tub. The two additional bedrooms share a private hall with a full bath and two large cedar closets.
Follow the wainscoting to the third floor and find five more bedrooms. Each with its own solid chestnut and pine door. Two of the rooms share a hall and would be perfect as a suite or two bedroom private area. The third bedroom is en-suite as well as the fourth. The fifth bedroom is quite spacious and has access to the fourth bath through a separate door. Lots of light in all of these rooms and some have spectacular views of the city including the Washington monument!
The private roof-deck is spectacular. Views 360. The original Rectory Cross is still standing and the perfect spot for watching the sunset behind the Masonic Temple. Look to your left through the pergola, and see a beautiful and perfect shot of the Washington monument!!! Lots of roof top planters with mature trees and flowers, depending on time of year…The fourth level is by appointment only, and must be approved for use by the owner. No children allowed on roof deck. Please be advised that this home is child friendly but not child proof. We are also in a quiet neighborhood setting and cannot allow any parties or loud music. None outside. Although we love pets, they are not allowed on the property. The completely separate basement unit is not included in rental and these tenants have access to rear yard for trash and emergencies only.

I rented the mansion for 3 days before and 3 days after my daughter's wedding in Charlottesville VA. Various family and friends stayed there as well as the bride and groom! We enjoyed being in one big place vs. separate hotel rooms. We could congregate in the downstairs rooms (the kitchen table became a popular spot) or be up in our bedrooms to get away from it all. We cooked a fair amount of the time; the kitchen is very well-stocked for any number of diners. Our only problem was not enough hot water for showers. I'd come back again!Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers.

Our office often rents large homes in DC for staff meetings and retreats. This was far and away the best experience yet. HUGE home, with plenty of rooms and beds for a large group. It's very well maintained, beautiful furniture that matches the historical charm of the house. Stunning roof patio/deck, modern and big kitchen and appliances, comfortable and clean. Great location - easy and safe walking distance to U Street, Dupont, and Logan Circle.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children.

The family met in DC for somewhat of a destination wedding. We had people from Michigan, Texas, and Boston. This house was the best place for us all to gather before and after the wedding. The location was great and we loved how close it was to Whole Foods and Safeway. The house was so quiet and once we were all in our rooms, we never heard a peep from anyone else. Although we didn't do any big meals in the kitchen, it was well-stocked with pots and pans. One night we put out a spread in the dining room and we had platters and serving pieces to spare. The parking space was a little tight for a minivan but it did fit. One of our party was a Mason so he was delighted to be across the street from the Masonic Temple. The first floor was great for entertaining however all the bedrooms are on the second and third floors. If anyone has a problem with stairs, this would not be a good fit. Our entire party just loved this place. I just wish it had been warmer so that we could have enjoyed the rooftop deck. The view was spectacular.Recommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing.

We had rented a 3 bedroom house in Georgetown for my family holiday trip to DC. The day before we were supposed to leave, we were notified that the house we were going to stay in had had a kitchen fire and was unlivable. Our party included 6 adults and two children less than 3 years old. By some miracle, The Rectory was available. I called the manager, and within literally 15 minutes had finished booking the property, signing all the documents, and paying. The house itself is very spacious (think 7 or 8 bedrooms, more than we needed for sure). The are a lot of common spaces that are very friendly and welcoming. The kitchen is professional grade - natural for a house this large. The location is very good, a 10 minute drive to the White House. There is one parking spot on the property - had a bit of a hard time fitting my BMW X5 in it, but after a couple of times I got the hang of it and came out a better driver at the end of it. No scratches either. The master bedroom is very large and nicely appointed. The other bedrooms are lovely and very cozy as well. Some are on the smaller end. Some of the furniture is a little older, but everything is very clean. The manager was very responsive to any questions. The economics are very compelling if you divide the daily price by the number of bedrooms (even if you do not use all bedrooms). We could have stayed at St Regis if need, but for a family like us it was so much better to all share one home and be together....Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children.

The house was great with plenty of space for all 20 people in my family. We had a blast having big meals together and easily getting out to explore the city. Property managers were very responsive and got the stove's pilot working again so that both ovens were functional for cooking all our meals. We had a wonderful week and would definitely consider using the house again.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, families with young children.

Recommended for: Tourists without a car, families with teenagers, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway.

My best friend's family and mine spent a memorable week reconnecting at the gorgeous mansion that was once the St Augustine Rectory in Washington, DC. We were so pleased to find the breathtaking historic home is located in a very friendly neighborhood. Sightseeing was high on our list of priorities and the location of this house could not be better with both the metro and bus stop just around the corner ( not to mention the great insider tips and advice from friendly caretaker, Paul). While dining and clubs were within walking distance, we chose to utilize the incredible kitchen space with its large stove and cavernous fridge. My husband was thrilled with the large screen tv and comfortable seating in the living room while I enjoyed cocktails and great conversation on the roof. DC is always a fun vacation but these accommodations can not be beat.Recommended for: Girls getaway, sightseeing.

Owner info
Why the Owner Chose Dupont Circle:
I bought this home because I wanted a large, unique and special place where my friends and family could gather. It had to be in the middle of it all yet, peaceful, quiet and elegant. Washington is an amazing city and this property is located in the most vibrant part of the city in my opinion. Shops, restaurants, Whole Foods, the theater, Steps Away....
The Unique Benefits at this House:
There are many unique things about this property. The property was a former Church Rectory. It was built for Communal living and the floors and walls are concrete and masonry. As a result it is very quiet floor to floor. The home has beautiful high celings and woodwork. It is directly across the street from the Masonic Temple and a lush Community Garden ..... Although the house is large, it is beautifully scaled and comfortable. There is an amazing park just up the hill with an incredible view of the city....
Quiet and Private the home has hosted countless Washington luminaries.
It has one of the most incredible roof decks with an amazing view of the Masonic Temple one of the cities most interesting Archiectual masterpieces. This roof deck is available for your enjoyment until 9pm.
