15. Things to do:
A) Fishing: If you enjoy fishing, a trip to Lake Gatun to fish for Peacock Bass is a fun day. You are guaranteed to catch a lot of fish. Private guides can be arranged through “Dennis” an expat living right on the lake. His telephone number is 6792-8027. The usual fee is $ 200 for the pontoon boat and pilot for the day. The boat can easily accommodate 5 or even 6 fishermen. They have poles ($ 5) and bait (minnows) ($ 6 per hundred) available. You should order at least 400 for 5 people for the day. You will run out about 3:00 if you stay busy. It is appropriate to tip the pilot a reasonable amount like $ 5-10 per person. He will filet your fish for $ .10 per fish (incredible cheap).
B) Monkey Island tour. You will have a great time on this trip to a different part of Lake Gatun see the canal, feed the monkeys and kayak up a slew to a cool waterfall. A very fun day. Be sure to insist on getting Captain Carl, another expat, who is very entertaining. Pricing varies depending upon whether you can get yourself to the boat ramp. Contact Capt. Carl at email@example.com. The price for visitors is $ 95 per person which includes a nice meal after the Kayak excursion on Capt. Carl’s houseboat. His website is www.junglelandpanama.com.
C) Mira Flores Locks: Tour the museum and get a first hand view of how the locks work. Try to catch the movie which is excellent and time it right to see a container ship pass through the locks. The cost is only $ 15 per person and is well worth the price. There is another tour where you actually get to go through two locks yourself aboard a small vessel. The cost is about $ 125 per person. I do not have contact information, but it should be easily accessible.
D) El Valle Zip Line: About a 45 minute drive up into the hills lays a dormant volcano and the town of El Valle. There is a fantastic Mercado (weekends are the largest) every day with a large array of local craftsmen displaying their wares. A few minutes past the town is the Zip-line tour. There are four stations accessible by a half hour hike up the mountain. It is easy for anyone reasonably fit. The website is www.el-valle-panama.com.
E) Water sports.
i) Playa Coronado can be accessed via a short walk or longer convoluted drive to the beach road. All along the road there are public access alleyways leading down to the beach. Park wherever you can find space, making sure you are completely off the road. The best access point is at the Red & Nick Villa on the right. It is just before the private Beach Club. Passes to use the Beach Club may be available from the rental agents at Panama Tropics.
ii) Falleron/Decameron. Drive up to Rio Hato past the Decameron Golf club and follow the Decameron road past the police station until it T’s at the beach road. You are in the village of Falleron. Turn right and look for a sign for Woody’s Restaurant. It is right on the beach. They have good food, and during the season live bands and huge parties. Grab a cool drink and use the beach free of charge. Further down from Woody’s is the uniquely Panamanian village called Falleron. There are quaint local shops dotted along the way. At the end of the Village there is a place for public parking and access to a beautiful public, lightly used beach. Pipa’s is a Trip Advisor bar/restaurant right on the beach if you get thirsty. Beach umbrellas and plastic lounges are available on a first come first served basis.
iii) Nitro City Action Sports Resort at Punta Chame. About 6 kilometers from the Rey back toward Panama City is the town of Chame. On the right look for a road to Punta Chame (Chame Point) there is a sign indicating where to turn. The road to Nitro City is excellent and it is beautiful, sometimes winding road over the hills before it flattens out near the beach. Continue on the main road for about 15 miles. After passing through a police checkpoint at Punta Chame, look for Nitro City entrance on the left. There is a small lake with a cable pull for wake board lessons and Kiteboarding is available as well. Also, a world class skate board course for the youth or action enthusiasts is available. The romantic hotel offers one of the nicest pools around. Check it out at www.Nitrocitypanama.com. Tel: 223-1747 for reservations.
iv) Be sure to pick up a free copy of the monthly El Visitante (The Visitor) magazine (both English & Spanish) which describes activities both in Coronado and Panama City. Another magazine, La Playa Community news has a monthly Tides Chart and loads of useful information. Both can be picked up for free at local Mercado’s (supermarkets) like the Rey or Machetazo.

About: I am a retired, preeminent trial lawyer, entrepreneur and author of legal works and the fiction novel 'The Lushan Addiction.' Early in my career, I was a CIA case officer serving in Hong Kong. I am a physical fitness enthusiast, an avid reader and an aspiring artist. Several of my charcoal drawings are displayed in this rental unit.
Why Las Lajas: I had been considering expatriating from the USA for several years and had researched several South and Central American countries. When a friend living in Panama invited me to visit, I discovered the perfect location for me.The Panamanian people are friendly, the government is progressive and has a very favorable package of benefits for retirees. It is hard to match the weather, the beautiful ocean and mountain views and the stable infrastructure in Panama whose capital city, with every modern convenience and world class shopping is only an hour away.
The Unique Benefits at this Condo: The expat community is warm and inviting for newcomers and visitors alike. There are weekly opportunities to gather with other expats and to mix with locals if that is what you desire.
