Our beach home is located in the most treasured spot on Harbor Island. The tall Loblolly Pines, Palmettos, and weathered myrtles provide welcome shade and a bountiful playground for birds, deer, and raccoons. With a full view of the marsh and the ocean, we can sit on our screened porch and deck and feel the ocean's breeze and listen to its roar, while at the same time, enjoying the calm and everchanging colors and sights of the marsh. Many nights we sleep on the sleeper swing on the porch as we listen to the unique night sounds of the marsh.
Our house is a great place for Marine Corp and Parris Island graduates' families to stay during graduation since it is only 13 miles east of Beaufort. Visitors who have stayed or visited at our house have used the words, 'This house just wraps itself around you - it is so welcoming.' It is a comfortable house providing ample sleeping space for 6 - 7 people. The master bedroom opens to the screened porch and has a triple dresser, bedside tables, three lamps, and a queen size bed with a new mattress. There is a small TV in this room with a DVD player. The master bath, a full bath, is off the master bedroom. The 'green' bedroom has a desk, chair, and double bed with side tables built into the headboard and three lamps, and the 'lavender' room has twin beds with new mattresses, a library table, nightstand, and a 'wash stand' style cabinet that was my grandmother's, two lamps. The bedrooms open into the hall. There is a larger, full bath off the hall across from the two bedrooms. Hairdryers are in both bathrooms as well as magnifying make-up mirrors. There is an ample closet in each bedroom. There are night lights in all three bedrooms.
The open living space with its cathedral ceiling and wood-burning brick fireplace presents a spacious, yet intimate area for entertaining. There is a piano in the living area as well as cable TV, DVD, CD offerings. There are ceiling fans in the living area in addition to a sofa, two chairs, and sitting pillows. The living room opens to the deck, which has a table and four chairs for outdoor entertaining. The screened porch opens to the deck as well. The kitchen is fully equipped with a microwave, toaster oven, two coffee pots, blender, juicer, egg-cooker, and array of cooking utensils, dishes, and glassware. We do not have an electric ice maker. There is a pantry where you can find garbage bags, dish clothes, paper products. There is also a wine rack and a long, oak table that is used for eating as well as cooking. It was made for us by a craftsman-friend and is signed. This beautiful table separates the ktichen from the living area. The dining room table serves six. The art/multipurpose room opens to the deck as does the living area. The art room is often used as a play area for our granddaughters. A small futon is in this room. There are beach towels and flip-flops for use in a basket in the foyer. Since we have pine floors, we request that guests be mindful of not bringing sand into the house or putting wet towels on the floor. Our house is designed to be as allergy-free as possible. There are bamboo shades on all windows in lieu of dust-catching shutters or blinds. No smoking is allowed. There is a vacuum cleaner in the hall closet, along with an ironing board and iron. A dog bed is in the master bedroom.

The golf cart and bikes offer enjoyable opportunities to explore the island and to access the beach, beach club, tennis courts, pool, fitness center, golf area and playground. It is a good 15 - 20 walk to the beach or beach club, which is pleasurable in all seasons but summer. The golf cart charger and the bikes are in the workroom under the house next to the car port.

The beach is perfect for walking and exploring - especially with young children. Our granddaughters (nine and five) love the gentle waves and warm tidal pools. Building sand castles and finding special shells make their eyes sparkle. The highest number of people I have counted on the beach is 35 and that was on the 4th of July. The 4th of July is always fun at Harbor Island - we have a parade and BBQ at the Beach Club. Golf carts are decorated as well as bicycles, baby strollers, and tricyles in red, white and blue. Such creativity! The pool is also a wonderful source of enjoyment and provides a chance to get some serious swimming done. It is fun to gather with friends at the Beach Club, have a glass of wine, and watch the gorgeous, low country sunsets.

During the summer our family enjoys horseback riding at Camelot Farms, picking tomatoes at Dempsey Farm, and going dolphin-watching with Captain Eddie's excursions on his boat docked at Fripp Marina. We also love to buy fresh seafood at Gay's docks as we watch the shrimp boats come in, and also at Dopson's dock on St. Helena Island. The Johnson Creek Tavern, where the local islanders eat, is always fun and the food is delicious. Music on the weekends make the dollar bills on the walls and ceiling flutter and dance.

Beaufort is one of the top 20 art towns in the USA. The town is full of galleries and art studios. It is worth a stroll - especially if you have a rainy day. The restaurants in Beaufort are all top-notch. Our favorites are Emily's, Break Water, Dock Side, Plums, Wren, and the ice cream shop in the Mall. The Shrimp Shack on St. Helena Island is also loved by visitors. There are so many wonderful places to eat and visit in downtown Beaufort and the surrounding area. In addition, Charleston is less than two hours away and Savannah is a one-hour drive.

Keywords: Harbor Island is approximately 13 miles east of Beaufort, SC, and was recently written up in Southern Living (April 2010) as one of 10 Southern spots for uncrowded, family beaches. It is a quiet place with three miles of secluded beach 'visited mostly by pelicans, herons, and horseshoe crabs.' There is a community pool, children's pool and playground, a one-hole golf course, tennis courts, and a crabbing dock. Nearby is Hunting Island State Park with an historic lighthouse and pristine Maritime Forest. The Johnson Creek Tavern is the local dive which features good low country seafood and music on weekends. Beaufort offers more sophisticated restaurants, shops, myriad art galleries and interesting sites such as the historic St. Helena's Episcopal Church and 'The Point.' A carriage ride will give you the full story of the lovely, old Southern homes encompassed by canopies of moss-laden oaks, and the town, itself. On nearby St. Helena Island you can visit the Gullah culture at Penn Center.

We have an amazing time visiting Harbor Island with our two children and my parents. We had a total of 6 staying in the house, along with our dog, and all fit comfortably. The house is decorated in a wonderful mix of eclectic styling ranging from antique to modern with an “old school” beach house charm. Tommie was wonderful to work with while booking our stay and all amenities were just as described. We enjoyed the porch swing bed and spent most of our evenings on the screened porch listening to the sounds of the marsh. The house is hidden among the trees and although you are close to the neighbors the heavy vegetation provides privacy on all sides. The golf carts and bicycles were a treat! The beach on the island is nice for sunning and wading, but we visited Hunting Island for waves and fishing. They have a weekly pass for $50 that was well worth the price. The remote location was a great escape from civilization, but be sure to shop wisely because it is a 20 minute ride to a real grocery store. With views like that though, who cares about shopping!

Owner response: This review is greatly appreciated and affirming. We love our beach house and are happy to know that our guests enjoy and treasure it as we do. It is always a great pleasure to know that visitors love the quaintness and quietness of our little island, the beautiful vistas, and the unique sounds of the marsh.

About the owner: I am a retired college administrator/professor and live in Columbia, SC. My husband owns and operates a building supply company. We have been coming to the barrier islands - Isle of Palms, Hilton Head, Fripp since moving to Columbia from Chattanooga, TN in 1974. We owned a small condo at Fripp when I was employed at USC-Beaufort. When our grandaughters arrived, we sold the condo, and bought our wonderful home on Harbor. A friend told me about the house and the location. As an artist, I immediately fell in love when I walked into the house, which had been built in the early 80's and owned by an elderly couple, and saw the marvelous view of the marsh and ocean. The house offers a great place for me to paint and reflect and a comfortable retreat for my husband, my son who lives in Chattanooga, daughter and her family who live in Seattle, WN. My two dogs also love the coolness of the porch and the quiet walks on the beach and around the island. Once on this island, we don't want to leave - it is so beautiful and calm.

Why the Owner Chose Harbor Island:
The house with the quiet marsh lot and view of the ocean was the calling card. I also was drawn to Harbor because it is a community and not a resort. It is quiet and safe. I loved the children's playground/pool and the beautiful big pool, the community garden, and the fact that the beaches are never crowded. The surf is perfect for young children - the waves don't scare them or knock them down. Harbor is also in an area that is convenient to to the many ammenities in the area. As an artist, I love the many art venues in the area.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
I love to sit on the porch and read, drink wine with guests, paint, and simply rest and relax. We love to watch the birds, and other wildlife. The marsh teems with movement and sound - it is entertaining to observe the life that continuously creates, sustains, and dissovles there. Raccoons, deer, herons, egrets - have passed our place in a single evening.
