About Michelle Eagle

Deerhaven guest Cottage, Grizzly Rose guest Cottage and the Bears Den studio apartment are located at Ravensnest. The property was originally owned by my parents and is considered our home place. I purchased it in 1989 from my parents and I have created an incredible Spirit of place. My parents both worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and dedicated their lives to working on Native Reservations. They were both detailed to Mescalero Apache Reservation. The home was vacant and decided to purchase and created my incredible space. I have dedicated 30 years working in the Arctic Circle helping to provide dental services to the Native Children. I am honored and humbled by my work and am profoundly greatful for the that opportunity.

Michelle Eagle purchased this cottage in 1989

Why Michelle Eagle chose Cortez

Ravensnest is situated between the backside of Mesa Verde and the front view of the Sleeping Ute Mountain in the valley south of Cortez. Panoramic views of the entire Valley can be seen on the property. Magical sunsets and superb stargazing can be seen while enjoying your spiritual retreat.

What makes this cottage unique

Ravensnest has a labyrinth, a traditional medicine wheel, and a ceremonial tipi. There is a shrine, reflecting ponds, koi ponds and peace gardens to connect to the universe.

A delightful place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

We cannot say enough good things about our stay at Ravensnest and the proprietor Michelle. It was completely stocked with everything we needed (and more) for my husband, me and our adult daughter. It was clean and comfortable with abundant outdoor seating. We stayed six nights and slept well in a peaceful and restful environment. A unique experience in Native American culture. Michelle is a gracious hostess. We will definitely return!

Lovely place to stay just outside Cortez

  • 5 of 5

This place was just right for 4 people looking for a comfortable, quiet place to stay while visiting the Cortez area. Well stocked with just about anything you might have forgotten (coffee, shampoo, toothbrushes, popcorn, etc.). The setting was peaceful, with trees and other landscaping providing a sense of privacy and active bird life to watch, including hummingbirds. There is not a lot of extra room to sit or put your stuff, but the weather was beautiful to be outside so we spent lots of time on the porch. The mattress in the front bedroom was a little soft and squeaky, but surprisingly comfortable anyway. The highway has steady traffic, but the first cabin is set back far enough from the road that the noise did not bother us. We closed the windows at night and the ceiling fan kept us nice and cool. Very clean!

Close to major highway

  • 3 of 5

There is some nice attention to detail throughout the property but also aspects that were less than I hoped for and expected from the description, leaving me feeling a bit deceived. This is not a peaceful property since it is right next to the major artery into Cortez with heavy semi trailer traffic. That, along with cheap squeaky mattresses, made for difficulty sleeping. Perhaps this could be improved with more sound proof windows.

The bedrooms look nice, however the kitchen is so small that counter space is right in front of the microwave door, it's using one or the other. Interior decoration has a very strong Christian theme, with bibles in the rooms and a big picture of Jesus in the hallway.

Instructions for food garbage were to dump it in a ditch behind the apartment so that animals didn't get killed foraging for it by the highway. I'd prefer not to go outside to clean up, much less to feed bobcats human food. Fortunately I didn't actually see any food in the ditch.

As a base for seeing sites in the area the property was fine, but given the location next to the highway, I don't think it is worth the price of $150 a night charged.

Adorable house in the woods

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Deer Haven the end of February, a delightful little house by the creek. Everything was just as advertised, the house was so clean we thought we must be the first people to have stayed there. The house is beautifully decorated with wonderful fun artwork and the grounds are peaceful and beautiful. The house is only four miles outside of Cortez, a fun place with lots of great restaurants. We loved everything about it.
