About Lori Cooper

Lori and I met in Grand Canyon where we were both river guides. After a 13 year residence in Uber-rural Torrey, Utah (pop 250) we moved to the metropolis of Dolores/Cortez and bought a 26 acre hayfield. We put in a septic system and bought a 20 year old, 30 foot travel trailer where we lived while I built the 'shop.'

Lori Cooper purchased this apartment in 1995

Why Lori Cooper chose Dolores

The 'Apartment' as we call it, is one wing of the shop building. We and the two kids lived in it for seven years while I scratched together the capital to build the 'dream home' out of pocket. We've been in the house for 12 years now and the kids are gone. In a lot of ways it would make more sense for us to move back into the Apartment and rent out the house. It's got everything you need.

What makes this apartment unique

Sorry, Montana, these are the best sunsets on earth. 192 degrees of sky. See into three states. The San Juan Mountains are America's Alps and less than a hour to the northeast. You can be at the base of the trail up Mt Wilson, the 14,000 footer featured on the Coors beer can in about the same time as it would take to get to Canyonlands National Park heading the other way. Single-track biking through the pines or the desert, 15 minutes either way. The Dolores River has some fun whitewater a few months of the year and the nearby San Miguel has some genuinely challenging sections. Flyfishing on any number of streams. Lake fishing at the second biggest body of water in Colorado. Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. You can see our placed from the first overlook when you're on top of the Mesa Verde scarp where the big mama cliff dwellings are. In fact, it's probably the coolest place in the world....

It was just what we wanted for a quiet Christmas get away.

  • 5 of 5

Lori and her husband were kind and helpful with our stay and shared information about the area. We loved the quiet, country feel of their place, with horses and cows along the lane and the amazingly bright stars at night. The little house was a perfect jumping off place for visits to Mesa Verde, Hovenweep, and Canyon of the Ancients Natonal Parks as well as 4 Corners and Shiprock. We also enjoyed the small towns nearby. The house is comfy and cozy to hang out in. The kitchen is nicely stocked with pans and dishes, we made nearly all our meals there. We highly recommend this VRBO for the house to stay in and the area for many outdoor activities.

Great place!

  • 5 of 5

Lori's apartment was wonderful for my family of 6. It had everything we needed plus lots more and the kids loved the loft beds! Very peaceful place. Communication was great prior to arrival as well as while we were there. If we are ever in the area again, we hope that Lori's place is available. Thanks!

Wonderful Trip

  • 5 of 5

Such a great place to stay. Loved the rural location, but you could still make a Walmart run. The house was clean and the kitchen well equipped to make pretty much any meal you’d like. The kids loved sleeping in the loft beds. All the beds were super comfy. Will definitely look to stay here again when we’re in he area.

Very nice setting at least for us - out in the country, spacious grounds.

  • 5 of 5

All the kitchen appliances needed; comfortable beds and furniture. Few spiderwebs in a couple windows but that's pretty much what comes with being out in the country. We had all we needed or expected.

Quiet and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

I stayed July 16-18, 2017, and used the property as a base for exploring national monuments in SW Colorado and SE Utah. The house was clean, everything worked (including the wifi), the bed was comfy, and the nights were absolutely quiet. I hope to return next year in the fall when temperatures are a bit lower.

Awesome house in a great location!

  • 5 of 5

Looking for a quiet place to stay, this is the perfect location. The house has a great lay out, super clean, and comfortable beds. The property has a great view of the San Juans. The location is perfect for day trips to Mesa Verde, Telluride, Four Corners and Hovenweep NM. The McPhee reservoir is a few miles if you are looking to enjoy the water. Cortez is just a few minutes away if you need run to the store. We enjoyed our stay and will definitely return!
