For Privacy & Luxury Big Mama's is the Biggest Bang for the Buck in the Big Easy

Big Mama’s is a stylish, Caribbean-influenced, mid-century, single-story, single-family residence, fully surround-gated, mini-compound with a big back yard & smaller front one. Located one block off St Claude Avenue, it's nestled in ‘Bywater’, the trendy NoLa neighborhood, just 2 miles south of the French Quarter, close to the Mississippi River.

Big Mama's features a very favorable floor plan for travelers in groups— above all catering to travelers who cherish PRIVACY LIKE HOME. Most classic NoLa Victorians are "shotgun-style" architecture, going in a single row of rooms from the front to the back of the house, whereby the floor plan makes it so that guests must walk through other guest's bedrooms in order to access common indoor areas (such as bathrooms, living rooms & kitchens). Big Mama's however has a 20th century floor plan that includes bedroom privacy like you're used to—which comes in handy when you're vacationing with larger groups & for extended stays. Namely, all 3 bedrooms at Big Mama's have their own separate doors with private access from common area hallways. Fully private bedrooms are an unusual amenity for New Orleans!

Feel like taking a break from the party scene one night & staying home? Big Mama's has 3 smart TV's, one in each Bedroom, with streaming accessibility for movies & TV shows—free access to Netflix, Hulu & many other channels. Our bedrooms are subtly themed, ‘Storyville’, ’Desire’, or ‘Castaway,’ you will find the names of the rooms in the captions of our photo gallery.

While Uber & Lyft offer service to Big Mama’s quickly & efficiently & are the preferred mode of transportation after-dark (or once the drinking begins) guests often also opt to rent a car or drive their own while vacationing in NoLa. Big Mama's is fully gated & enclosed with surround-fencing —6 to 7-foot high & this includes off-street fully-gated parking for up to 3 vehicles. Off-street gated parking is another unusual amenity for anything this close to the Quarter.

Home to singer Ani Defranco, Bywater is not the very fanciest neighborhood in the Big Easy but it is hands-down THE FASTEST GROWING & definitely the HIPPEST in all of New Orleans! Attributes that contribute to its growth include the influx of film industry professionals, with more & more cutting edge restauranteurs, new bars & micro-breweries coming in every year. The Caribbean-bound cruise ship terminal recently making a home on its shores has stirred further interest with plans in the works to extend the street car line the rest of the way down St Claude. (The closest is currently just 1.6 miles or 2575 meters from Big Mama’s.) Bywater’s burgeoning yet still raw charm has ultimately attracted all types of young artists bringing refreshing diversity & creativity & filling this neighborhood with new purpose. To see some of this in action visit 'The Print Shop', located only 2 doors from Big Mama's, for a Saturday night art show/bohemian gathering—it has become a community art center known all over NoLa. Some of the best Mardi Gras parades either originate, come through, or end in Bywater. Notably is the adults-only, satirical, Krewe du Vieux. With mule-drawn carriages & bawdy but pertinent political commentary, Krewe du Vieux is considered the most individualistic & traditional of all New Orleans parading krewes & pulls in locals & tourists alike during Mardi Gras season—like no other parade.

Big Mama's isn't located in the slickest neighborhood in NoLa—but it is very much located extremely CLOSE TO IT ALL. Big Mama’s is just around 2 miles from Jackson Square, Royal Street & Bourbon Street. It's close enough to the French Quarter, the Convention Center, The Super Dome & the Fairgrounds to make it a preferred destination for bar hoppers, foodies, music lovers, & festival goers but far enough "from the madding crowd" for Bywater to be the preferred and well kept ‘niche privee’ by recurring visitors & locals alike.

The new 'BlueBike' City program has several lock & go bike kiosks being placed just a stone's throw from Big Mama's doorsteps. The bike ride around the river through Crescent Park to the French Quarter is short & spectacular. Or you can peddle in another direction down St. Claude to Esplanade & then through the gorgeous bayous of Mid-City over to City Park for coffee & beignets at Morning Star. (City Park is the second largest park in the U.S., second only to Central Park in Manhattan.) Or—cycle or ride over to catch the ferry to get to the film & TV studios across the river, or to Magazine Street in the Garden District, or to Uptown to visit Audubon Park for a nature Walk or to see the Zoo.

A Big Mama's Rental Agreement is accepted online by the booking guest at the time of booking. In order for any booking to be finalized, 2 days prior to arrival the last 2 pages of the Agreement must be filled out & returned along with a front and back copy of the booking guest's state-issued photo ID (or passport, for international guests). The Agreement specifies house rules & must be shared with all guests. A copy of the Agreement is available in the House Book to refer to during your stay.

Also prior to arrival, guests will be asked to give the host (Sallie) their ETA as soon as they know it as guests are greeted in person upon arrival. If there's any needed household item we missed that's within reason that will make your stay ever so much better, our Concierge will be happy to acquire it for you in order to make your experience here as close to home comfort as can be.

Lastly, it should be noted to future travelers that there are a few free-range chickens flying in & out of Big Mama’s gated compound & its highly likely you will encounter some during your stay. It may be at night that you spy one of our birds roosting in the tall trees that border the back yard. Perhaps you’ll see one or two foraging for morsels in the front garden as you enter or leave the compound during the day. There’s a very strong chance you will hear a rooster crowing in the wee morning hours as you awaken to your first cup of hot New Orleans-style chicory coffee. Or you may very well spy several crossing the street, just as the sun breaks over the horizon as you roll back into Big Mama’s, from a long & lovely late night out on the town.

About Sallie HIggins

As a young child I spent a lot of time with my maternal grandmother & namesake for Big Mama's Bywater Compound. Between then & now I also spent a lot of years living out west. But the memories of her wicker porch swing, fried chicken & handmade quilts, finally beckoned me back to my roots. These and many more are childhood sensory experiences that offer me comfort no matter how far away I've traveled & are indicative of the South. Some of the fond memories of my childhood are revived here in this compound, & many (most) are likewise reinvented with a fresh and current NoLa take. It's my wish that fond Southern memories are felt & created here again & again by & with the guests that choose to grace this space with their wanderlust to explore New Orleans, the most unique city in the whole United States.

Why Sallie HIggins chose Saint Claude

Big Mama's is located in a Historic Preservation District largely comprised of Victorians & Craftsmen, but Big Mama's is one of the few houses that was built mid-20th Century. That being the case it came with different, yet desirable architectural features. Some of these include; a driveway with plentiful off-street parking, a big back yard, a good-size front yard, & a NON-shot-gun floor plan whereby BEDROOMS ARE PRIVATE as one does not access bedrooms in the back of the house by walking through bedrooms in the front & middle of the house. Since this house is designed for larger groups, privacy can make or break a good vacation.

What makes this house unique

This neighborhood is undergoing a huge transformation & the positive energy that is around that is special. There is an influx of young artists from all over the country coming here & when that happens to an area there is a unique force that shapes things for a better future. There are also multi-generational locals here & the beauty of how well we are all coming together to make Bywater better than ever brings tears to my eyes. People are so friendly here! After spending over 30 years in SoCal it is a refreshing blessing to experience a different way of relating to my neighbors. Big Mama's is a work in progress too. Over the years I see it continuing to transform for the better, right along with the community.

Notes:
A local grocery store chain called Rouse's rules Nola. The best one is in Carrollton, about a 10 to 15 drive from Big Mama's and located at 400 N Carrollton Ave, New Orleans, LA 70119. Parking is great and not too crowded, its conveniently next door to Marshall's.

Nice property!

Three nice bedrooms each with a good bed and TV. Great shower, nice kitchen, and large dining room table. Secure property. Neighborhood is so-so but was a short ride to everything to see in New Orleans. Sallie and Phillipe were great and communicated well with us.

Our small family reunion stayed at Big Mamas. It met the needs for our group. We slept well, talked lots. The location met our needs well. Easy to check in and assistance was available - though not needed.

Owner's Response: Thank you Pamela- Philippe and I had been deliberating about the bike situation. We thought that as soon as a guest requested them that we would clear the storage shed to make room for them and quickly obtain! In the meantime... in late October NoLa announced this awesome program called 'Blue Bikes' : "Beginning later this fall, the bikes will be available 24 hours a day at kiosks throughout the city. Riders will have to download a smartphone app and start an account to access the bikes. A monthly pass is $15, which covers up to one hour of riding a day. The city also will offer a pass for low-income riders at $1.67 a month ($20 a year). There also is a "pay-as-you-go" rate for $8 per hour of use. Each eight-speed, chain-less, blue-colored bike is equipped with GPS and "remote locking capabilities" and front and rear lights and a basket. Riders also can track their miles pedaled, calories burned and amount of carbon they offset by riding rather than driving." So with 'Blue Bikes' in the works, we decided that in fact being able to ride a Blue Bike to the Quarter or City Park or the Garden District all day long and then NOT have to actually bring it back to Big Mama's is a more favorable situation:) There are soon going to be bike kiosks all over the Bywater and the French Quarter, wrapping around the river through downtown and the Garden District and also stretching up to City Park. My sincerest apologies for not editing the site in a timely manner to reflect this change. We are excited about the convenience that these bikes will soon bring. Imagine being able to spend the day pedaling around and then after night falls, just being able to conveniently turn the bike in and go out to dinner or to a show, meet friends at a bar, and then Uber or Lyft easily back home:) Thank you for your wonderful review and we look forward to you returning to Big Mama's soon. At Big Mama's you will find yourself either walking distance, a scenic bike ride, or a $5.00 to $10.00 Uber/Lyft fare to some of the coolest places there are to see in the Big Easy. These include, but are not limited to, 7-days a week Bacchanal Wine Bar & restaurant with superb cuisine, live music & herbaliciously-crafted cocktails, The Country Club, The Joint (casual, lively, kid-friendly & always crowded BBQ by the river), Paladar 511, Maritza's, Marky's Bar, Pizza Delicious, Always Bar for decadence & Burlesque, Cafe Degas for fine French indoor/outdoor cafe-style dining , Mimi's, Satsuma's, Hi-Ho's Lounge for dancing and rowdy revelry, Elizabeth's, Port of Call, St Roch Market, Tipitina's, LaFitte's Blacksmith Shop/French Quarter for a better Bourbon Street experience, Spotted Cat/Frenchman Street for music some of the best nightlife in the Quarter, to name just a few.

There are many more great places to see or eat at— located not too far from Big Mama's, such as, The Column's, Coquette, Caven, the bar at The Pontchartrain Hotel, the bar at The Roosevelt Hotel, Carousel Bar in the Quarter, Brennan's in the Quarter, Bayou Beer Garden, Fair Grounds Coffeehouse, Fair Grounds Race Course (home to Jazz Fest as well as horse racing), WW 2 Museum, Convention Center, the Super Dome, Louis Armstrong Park nearby on St. Claude, Mardi Gras World, Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, Audubon Park, Morning Call Coffee Stand/City Park, Jacques-Imo's, Parkway Bakery & Tavern, Commander's Palace, to name a few more exciting must-dos/must-sees. Big Mama's is very much close to it all, a 5 to 15 minute car ride will get you just about anywhere worth seeing or being.

Guests often want to know about grocery stores & shopping. Rouse's is a family-owned yet large chain that rules the grocery store market in New Orleans. My personal favorite is Rouse's in Carrollton located at 400 N Carrollton Ave, New Orleans, LA 70119. There are other Rouse's just a bit closer in distance but this one is the best for easy parking & inventory. Also, next door is Marshall's so if you need to pick up something you forgot to pack you may find it there. There's also a Dollar General close by for flip flops or other stuff you may need. To get to Rouse's in Carrollton it's easiest to simply take side streets instead of the highway, which is how Google will direct you.
