Stunning Mountain Lake, Private Forest, Beautiful 4 BR & 4 BA

Bedrooms 4
Space 3,200 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 4 Baths, (Sleeps 12)

Montlake is a unique mountain lake formed millions of years ago. It is one of the very few natural lakes in Tennessee. Our Montlake retreat is a very spacious home with about 20 acres of wooded grounds. There are trails around the lake, and there is a waterfall directly across the lake from the terrace.

Montlake has four bedrooms, four baths, living room, library, great room/dining room, kitchen, and laundry room. There are two fireplaces (library and great room) and a large deck above the terrace. It is a long, rambling house, so there is plenty of privacy for everyone. The master bath has a jetted tub and separate shower, as well as a large walk-in closet and a bidet. The other three baths have tub-showers. The laundry room has large capacity (front-loading) washer and dryer.

The views at Montlake are breathtaking.

Here's what our guests have to say:

'Our stay at Montlake was GREAT!!! Your home was so beautiful and comfortable. There was plenty of room for everyone (we had 9 in our group) to relax and do their own thing. The lake was breathtaking, we hiked around the lake, grilled, and enjoyed the sites. The waterfall was beautiful, it had just rained and it was falling very heavily. The location of your home was also great we were just abbout 20-25 minutes to all attractions, Rock City, Ruby Falls and Chattanooga Railroad Station. Thank you for letting us come to your lovely home. I highly recommend this home to anyone. Hope to stay again next year.' --Carol I.

'We have been recommending your house to friends and family!' --Fabienne V.

'Thank you for the use of your lovely home! We had a relaxed, companiable weekend with our friends. Oh--and the view of the lake is breathtaking! Thank you again; you have a lovely, lovely home.

--Linda and John D.

Cozy, cabin like home with plenty of room, incredible view, close to trails & city & friendly owners

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely enjoyed our stay at this place. Our group included 4 couples and we each had our own private room and bathrooms. It could definitely sleep more if your group is larger. The view in the back yard is incredible with a small trail of its own. Just a short drive away are a few longer trails with swimmable blue holes. We recommend the Cumberland trai;l it is amazing. Lots of food options near by and only a short drive away is downtown Chattanooga. Other things we enjoyed were -lookout mountain and rock city. - The owners are very sweet and accomdating. So easy to work with. We love this place and plan to come back!

Wonderful Escape with Family

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed Mariela's home. The view from the backyard is breathtaking, photos don't do it justice! We enjoyed the walking path around the lake, an evening fire outdoors, and the large dining table for family meals. Our dog, Olive, felt right at home and loved the big wooded yard with plenty of sticks for fetching. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to unplug and enjoy the company of friends and family.

Perfect place!

  • 5 of 5

We rented the house for a basketball tournament that was nearby for our team of boys and coaches for the week. It was secluded to where we could meet and bond together as a team. The scenery was awesome around the house and the walking trails were good for the boys to go out on. There was plenty of room for every one.

The folks were perfect to work with and helped out in any way needed.

Maybe not the best for a winter vacation

  • 3 of 5

I chose this house over other options because of the four bedrooms and four bathrooms and the walking trail. (We loved the walking trail!) The two bedrooms on the left side of the house were uncomfortably cold. The heating unit just couldn't keep up. (The master bedroom stayed hot, though.) My husband was able to keep the living area and kitchen warm with a fire in the fireplace. It would have been miserable without that.

The beds in those two rooms weren't great either. My son ended up sharing the master with us while my other son and daughter-in-law had to sleep in separate beds with a space heater (that we brought with us) on in their room. The TV in there had lines through it and the overhead light had a short in it so we took the bulb out. We were frustrated by the bathrooms too. We had trouble with the cold water line freezing up the first morning. My son couldn't even get the showers in the two extra bathrooms to work so we ended up sharing bathrooms. The showers had no water pressure and if anyone flushed the toilet while you were showering, it turned scalding hot. The TVs only seemed to work on one channel. Every time we changed the channel it said we had to pay to watch. The WiFi was very unreliable and kept cutting out. Only one of us had cell reception. When we had two appliances running in one plug in the kitchen, it blew the breaker. Thankfully, we've had issues with that at our own old house and knew what to do.

I could see this being a great place to stay in the summer, with the patio and the lovely walking trail, but during the cold weather, not so much. I would recommend that the owner leave instructions for operating the TVs, and the location of the modem, as well as check out instructions--we had no idea if we were supposed to strip the beds or gather the towels like we have had to do at other rentals. (I called about the TV and modem when we first arrived and she was very sweet and helpful, but didn't bother her again with any of the other issues because we didn't see anything she could do about it.) I had everything we needed in the kitchen except for a sharp knife for chopping--somehow I managed with a butter knife, but the owner may want to put at least one good knife in the kitchen.

Chattanooga is only 20 minutes away and we enjoyed the drive and the tourist attractions. We had plenty of room to spread out in the house to do our own thing but loved the big dining table for meals and games. Overall, we had fun.

Owner's Response: To all our guests: The Retreat has a central heating system that keeps the inside temperature at 72 degrees F. The system also has an emergency heating setting. We also have extra and very efficient heaters that may be set up in any or all rooms that our guests deem desirable. We also have the two fireplaces and two ricks of firewood for those who enjoy the heartwarming experience of a wood fire. (Of course, the central heating unit can't keep the house warm if guests turn the thermostat down from 74 to 65.) The bedrooms are set up as clearly described and shown in our VRBO website. We have plenty of light bulbs on the premises (kitchen cabinet). If one of the 96 light bulbs burns out and the guests are unable to change it, we are more than glad to do it for them. Similarly, we are happy to show guests how to operate the showers, tune in any of the scores of available (Direct TV) television channels, find a knife in the knife drawer, adjust the thermostat, use the posted password for the wi-fi, and so on. We really appreciate our guests letting us know if there is anything wrong with the house, especially if a problem could result in great harm, such as with a frozen water line. During the record-setting cold weather we've had this winter, we've heard that many of the homeowners on the mountain have had to deal with frozen pipes. We are just next door and are happy to deal with any issue that arises. We can't take care of a problem if we don't know about it. Kindest regards, Mariela
