Overview

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

The Silver Salmon Lodge is a High End Denali Log Home in the heart of the Kenai Peninsula! We are tucked away in a spruce and birch forest frequented by the local moose! An acre lot ensures privacy and surrounded by spruce pines all around!

I furnished our home tailored for the family vacation. While it's also very suitable for fisherman it's designed for the family/couples that are wanting to experience all of the activities in Alaska!!

It's a 3 bedroom, 2 full bath with Jacuzzi tub. It has a high end kitchen complete with a Sub Zero glass door refrigerator, Wolf gas range, blue pearl granite countertops, black granite sink, separate freezer for your catch, and more!

The bedrooms are furnished with queen(2), full(1), and twin log beds(2). I purchased higher end mattresses for all 5 beds for optimum comfort after long days of adventure!

The upper floor full bath is complete with a Jacuzzi tub. The lower bathroom has a shower/bath combination with granite countertop and hickory cabinet.

The LG steam washer and dryer are stacked in the main floor bathroom neatly tucked into the front corner. I chose this combo because it will quickly and efficiently wash and dry large loads of clothes reducing the amount of clothes our guest need to pack and bring on their trip.

The main room contains the wood stove (wood burning not gas) and leather sofa, love seat, reclining chair, LCD HDTV, etc. We also provide an 8 seat dining table as well as 3 seat kitchen island.

We also provide Direct TV service with High Definition and Tivo.

We also provide a Weber Infra Red outdoor Gas Grill for your use.

There is an outdoor fire pit behind the home for telling all those tall fish tales!

Our home is decorated in native Alaskan prints, etc.and all linens are provided as well as stocked kitchen. We only remove perishables or opened dry foods after each guest to reduce your grocery bill and save you time. The kitchen is stocked with a large supply of glassware, silverware, cooking utensils, professional cooking pots/pans, dinnerware, etc.

The beds are traditional Alaskan log. Our sheets and towels are replaced every 2 years and comforters/blankets every 3-4 years. In addition our sheets are at a minimum of 300 thread count and most 400+. Pillows are down and quality foam. The two lower bedrooms both have queen size beds and closets with plenty of room. The loft is 12' x 17' with a full and 2 twin beds. The loft bathroom has a Jacuzzi tub and granite/hickory vanity.

**I do leave some of the previous sheets, towels, comforters that are unstained in good condition for use as well.

I chose Sterling to build our home because of it's central peninsula location and solitude. We are minutes from the Kenai, Kasilof, and Russian rivers and several lakes. The Russian River Campground entrance in Coopers Landing is exactly 30 miles from our driveway. We are also, centrally located on the peninsula and within easy reach of Seward and Homer. 1.25 hours from Seward and 1.20 hours from Homer.

Incredible fishing for Kings, Sockeyes, Silvers, Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden. You can also go clamming for razor clams nearby! Plenty of mountain biking, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, climbing, etc.

***We do provide 8 spinning rods and reels for your use while staying at our home!

***I also make myself available during the season 24/7 to help guest with accurate up to date fishing information (current fish counts, current hotspots on rivers and streams all updated within 12 hours), Popular Hikes for all exp. levels, best kayaking excursions, preferred fishing and sightseeing charters, Wildlife viewing locations, etc.

About Frank Berry

Natalie and I are very active so it was just a matter of time before we discovered Alaska! Since we were married 20 years ago we have logged a lot of traveling miles but after visiting Alaska we decided it would be a regular trip :) and that is how we came to buying a home here! Natalie, Amelia, and I love the state of Alaska and everything it has to offer. Like many of you we cannot afford to spend more than 1-3 weeks a year in Alaska and are dependent on our vacation renters as well as winter renter. We try to make our home feel like it's your home in Alaska also. Amelia, our 7 year old daughter lets us know what to include keeping it very 'child friendly'. I feel that we have furnished the home well with durable and medium to high end furniture and appliances. I want our guest to feel like they are staying in a well appointed, comfortable, and clean home. We also want your stay to be stress free and not be burdened with worry over broken dishes, scratches on the floor, etc. We keep our home maintained nicely but also understand that things can happen during your stay just like at home! A lot of guest have told us just that....they felt very 'at home'. And we are very fortunate to have several repeat guest. Our home and it's expenses are almost entirely paid for buy summer guest and winter caretaker and that is something that Natalie and I do not take lightly! We truly appreciate our guest choosing our home and are always available for help with any fishing, hiking, boating, climbing, etc plans you may have. I don't think this sets up apart from a lot of the other lodging in Alaska ....It just makes us one of the pack!

Frank Berry purchased this house in 2007

Why Frank Berry chose Sterling

We are actually in Sterling (10 miles from Soldotna) and we picked this spot for the following reasons: It's about 1 hr and 20 minutes to either Seward or Homer, 30 miles from our door to the Russian River Campground and confluence of the Kenai River, 1 mile from the world famous Kenai River, The Swanson River Canoe Boundary Waters ( 1million acres of protected streams and lakes -no boat motors or float planes) begin 1 mile behind our home, Fred Meyer and the town of Soldotna are only 10 minutes away, and the large amount of wildlife that wander through our yard!!!

What makes this house unique

I have tried to cater our home to the all around Alaska traveler....the travelers that will be doing it all --fishing, hiking, atving, mt biking, kayaking, boating, sightseeing, fixing meals in the kitchen, if needed ability to stay in touch with the real world. We have done almost all of the activities on the Peninsula and always enjoy giving advice/suggestions to our renters.

We wanted Alaska style and this is it!

  • 5 of 5

I am a little late in giving my review, but late is better than never! I brought my family to stay in the silver salmon cabin in June 2017. We loved the homes alaskan feel! We we were a family of 5 plus I brought my parents and everyone had a bed and felt very comfortable. I liked the location of the home since we traveled from anchorage to homer and Seward for day trips. The home is centrally located between these 3 towns. Even though the previous guest took home the wifi receiver we still had service on our devices so we could still make calls and stream videos. We had everything we needed, and just went to the cool town of Soldotna for groceries and we were set! Frank the owner responded very quickly to any questions we had and went completely above and beyond to help us learn some fishing facts in the area (it can feel very overwhelming with all of the rules and species of fish). This was literally a dream come true vacation for my entire family... and we would definitely stay here again.

Alaskan Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay at the Silver Salmon. Frank & Natalie are very accommodating and went above and beyond to make our stay one we will always remember. Frank kept us informed of the best places and times to fish. He also enlightened us on activities in the area. The layout of this home is perfect. The kitchen and appliances are top of the line. We had plenty of room to relax and visit with our family. Wood was stacked on the porch for a fire if we needed it a long with a gas grill for cooking. This home is truly an Alaskan paradise! The cabin is just minutes from town and the Kenai River. What more could you ask for? Thank you for allowing us to stay and enjoy your beautiful home!

Mostly good, but a few things to note

  • 1 of 5

Overall, nice house with all amenities. Oven, stove, fridge, fish freezer, downstairs bath were great. Owner. Rey responsive while we were at the house. However, a few things to keep in mind:

it is a really noisy house in general (floors creak, etc). The 3rd room is in the loft with no doors.

The bathroom upstairs has no shower, just jacuzzi tub. So only 1 shower in house.

We had no WIFI as the router was missing. Given location we could rarely get online w/ cell service while at house.

We didn't use the fire pit as weeds were overgrown & it was not all that inviting.

We were never refunded our damage deposit. We left the house immaculate and weren't contacted by owner that anything was wrong. Haven't heard back from owner even though I have called & emailed asking when I can expect the refund. A complaint filed w/ VRBO resolved nothing. So now I will dispute charge w/ credit card company. Such a pain. Too bad.

Owner's Response: I will start this by saying that Natalie and I take every review seriously but not being truthful relates directly to the integrity or lack there of in this review. I will address each complaint in my response. I am available to our guest 24/7 during their stay and frequently receive text/calls from them. I did have communication (questions) with her and not once did she convey a single complaint to me. We did have a significant issue with our online payment vendor regarding deposit return system which is supposed to be automatic unless I contact them. It took us about 3 weeks to clear up everything and 2 days after I submitted their refund they left this review which is almost entirely inaccurate. I did apologize to all 7 guest that were delayed until it could be straightened out and to date no other guest have expressed any anger/emotional distress over delayed refund. Maybe it’s because we only charge a $100.00 deposit. 1. Creaking Floors-Our floors are ¾” Hickory wood floors and yes they do creak and always have. In the 10 years of renting we have never rec’d a complaint about them. I’m unaware of any other noises that our house has and again no complaints to date 2. The upstairs bedroom is advertised as a loft in the pictures and loft by definition means no doors. The vrbo.com listing does not offer the option of “loft” under bedrooms. Again to date we have never rec’d a complaint nor an accusation of false advertising. 3. The upstairs bathroom is listed as a full with jacuzzi jetted tub. It is not listed as Jacuzzi tub with shower. Again we have never rec’d a complaint over this. 4. The wifi is a Verizon MiFi located in the kitchen drawer. Earlier in the season a guest took it home by accident but it had been returned before their stay. We have 4 bars for both CDMA (Verizon/Alltel/etc) and GSM (ATT/T-Mobile/etc) so it is inaccurate to say otherwise. Again they never once relayed this to me during their stay. 5. The fire pit is uninviting/overgrown this season and I agree 100% with that complaint. I had already decided to move it to the front area of our home in May 2018. If you read the beginning of this review it says “Overall, nice house with all amenities. Oven, stove, fridge, fish freezer, downstairs bath were great. Owner. Rey responsive while we were at the house. However, a few things to keep in mind”. So a 1 star rating seems a little harsh IMO. Thank you for taking the time to read my response.

A truly beautiful home in a great location!!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at the Silver Salmon Lodge. Frank Berry was extremely helpful with information on where to go and what to see and do. The home was very clean with comfortable beds and clean linens. The kitchen appliances were top of the line!!! (We were trying to figure out how to put the stove and fridge in our suitcases, but figured we'd be over the airplane luggage weight restrictions. LOL). We would definitely stay here again!! On our last morning, we saw a momma moose and two calves in the back yard. Too cool!!
