We are a 15 minute (6 mile) drive from Lexington, Virginia, home to Washington & Lee University, Virginia Military Institute and the Virginia Horse Center. Rockbridge County Virginia is home to the Maury River, the only river in Virginia that begins & ends in the same county. Spring, summer and fall are great times for running the whitewater in Goshen Pass or tubing the flat water into Lexington. Come to the country where you can stay up late, dazzled by the stars and the Milky Way.

In the late fall & winter, enjoy our cozy cabin and a game of pool. After dark in June and July, the lightning-bug display is amazing every night! Later in the summer and fall, the tree frogs and cicadas fill the air with their songs. The cabin is right on a popular (and challenging) biking route.

The School House is located within 300 yards of a river access point locally known as Alone Mill. Upstream is my personal favorite stretch of canoeing on the Maury, it's a peaceful 5 hour ride in slow water and can be as fast as 2 hours when the river is up! You can put in at Goshen or Rockbridge Baths and walk home from the take-out.

If you're more interested in a bubbling stream, Alone Mill Creek passes within 50 feet of the front door!

Rockbridge County also has thousands of acres of National Forest and State-managed land for hunting and hiking in the mountains. The cabin is within about 6 miles of access at Goshen Pass and other spots are equally close.

Other activities at the School House include a pool table, ping pong, basketball goal and badmitton set. The yard is large and flat, perfect for a football game, and the driveway is flat also, good for the little kids to practice bike riding.

A 1 mile walk will take you to weekend wine tasting at Lexington Valley Vineyard, one of several vineyards in the county.

About Sarah or Charles

I have lived in Rockbridge County, VA since 1990. While I attended W&L, my friends & I often drove around the county. I always loved driving through Alone Mill when we were going to Goshen Pass; I knew there was special magic in this place. It's peaceful & the stars are brighter than most.

Sarah or Charles purchased this house in 2007

Why Sarah or Charles chose Shenandoah Valley

My partner bought a house at Alone Mill in 1998 & when the Schoolhouse became available in 2007, I jumped at the opportunity. The Maury River here is perfect for canoeing, tubing, or just lounging in a chair at the edge of the water! Anyone who likes to spend time outdoors loves Alone Mill.

What makes this house unique

Fresh water recreation - fishing, canoeing, boating, tubing - and plenty to do inside or in Lexington area if the weather isn't perfect. Ample space in the cabin for a large group to gather and enjoy time together.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Staying here at the schoolhouse was such a wonderful way to relax at the end of a long day. It is so serene here. The creek is mesmerizing. The absolute quiet is such a treat and perfect for a solid night's sleep. I love all the memorabilia of Virginia found all around the house! It was a nice time and I hope I can repeat it. All the comforts of home. Awesome! Thanks!

Cute, comfortable, clean, and cozy!

  • 5 of 5

We rented the Schoolhouse for a long weekend in order to visit our son, who is in school at Washington and Lee. Both our dogs and us enjoyed our stay! The cabin was clean, comfortable, and well stocked. We built a campfire in the fire pit and made good use of the pool and ping-pong table -- great idea to have this in the cabin! We would stay here again and recommend the cabin to others thinking of renting.

The house was wonderful! Very clean and everything was in working order. We really weren't there much except to sleep. Would definitely stay there again.

Lovely!

  • 4 of 5

Perfect spot for VMI visit. Comfortable and clean. Only minor complaints-- the house definitely smelled musty and we couldn't get rid of the smell. Mostly in the rooms with carpets. I would have enjoyed sitting on either of the decks but they had not been cleaned off in a while. There were a lot of bugs inside the house. Thank you!

Owner's Response: Thanks for staying at the Schoolhouse during your VMI visit. The "musty" smell you noticed was actually residual skunk spray from a dog - skunk encounter. It took several weeks to dissipate. I'm sorry the porch and deck weren't clean. They do get swept off weekly but keeping them clean, especially in the fall, is a challenge. Stink bugs inside are the bane of my existence. If anyone knows a secret to getting rid of them, please share.

Great house outside of Lexington - nicely situated right by a perfect creek for exploring!

  • 4 of 5

The owners were great & helpful - and live directly across the street. :) plenty of space for our two kids and dog to play, explore & creek stomp to the river. Comfortable house and wonderful to be so close to town and the river - and have cool mornings and evenings in June in Virginia!

Wonderful house, thoughtfully appointed for leisure comfort and fun!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay in this charming, well stocked house. It has a ping-pong table where the dining room table usually resides, much more fun! The owners provided all the little things, so we didn't have to remember to buy them: Dish detergent, laundry detergent, paper towel, toilet paper, etc.

I am very picky about cleanliness in a rental and this house surpassed my standards, it was scrupulously clean and comfortable.

The location is secluded enough to get a rural feel, but close enough to town to be easily accessible.

The porch is an enchanted place for morning coffee, with its eastern exposure and babbling stream within ear-shot.

Overall a winner, a charming house in a scenic setting. I highly recommend it.
