The Blue Whale Inn is an older small private family cottage on beautiful St. George Island, Florida with direct access to, and stellar views of, the Gulf of Mexico. Please note; SGI is a 'laid back', quiet and peaceful location. This island is the complete opposite from Panama City Beach! There are several bars & restaurants blocks from the house with live music on some nights, DJs & karaoke on others... However, If you are looking for wild 'party times' with big crowds, then we are not for you. :-(
Built in the late 70's & Purchased in '94 by the Summers/Matthews family, our home is now available for rent (in 1 week blocks only) to the general public on a very limited basis.
This vacation house is not a 'glamorous beach mansion'. It's older construction and it shows it! Although the paint is faded on the exterior, the interior 70's paneling is warped in several areas and floor uneven in others, there's some dust on the ceiling fans and picture frames and the carpet definitely needs replacing... the house is safe and sound. We are obviously not for everyone (we definitely wouldn't pass the ‘white glove treatment’).
We are not a 5 star property. The '5 Stars' we're received from past guests on VRBO were based on their exceptional personal experience with full knowledge of the 'condition of the cottage' and their managed and informed expectations. That being said: the BWI is cozy and comfortable (with a lot of character)... plus the price is very reasonable (since it's not a new property). It’s a great option for a family that doesn't want to pay 4K per week for the place across the street (we are pleased to be able to offer an affordable choice for your vacation)!! Again, and we can't stress this enough, this is a 45 year old 'lived in' cottage and in many ways would not be suitable for many families that are expecting pristine 'resort quality accommodations'.
The Whale is a traditional 'Florida beach cottage'! Friends have described it as a "1970's type island bungalow". The surrounding grounds are completely natural... there is NO fancy landscaping. The location, however is directly across the street from the ocean with easy public beach access (see pictures). It's near the center of the island (309 West Gorrie Drive) and within walking distance to shops, restaurants and recreation areas (it's only a half block walk to The Blue Parrot restaurant). There is very little 'traffic' on the road in front of the house, crossing the street to the beach is not a problem (more bicycles & golf carts pass by than cars).
The home sleeps 6 comfortably with 3 bedrooms (loft BR with king bed and sitting area, master BR with queen bed & additional BR room with twin beds). There is a recently renovated bath with a large walk in custom tile shower on the main level, a half bath in the loft and outdoor 'open-air' shower on the side (with a soap/shampoo/conditioner dispenser). The home features a large deck with a 4 person hot-tub (we keep the water 'cool' during the hot summer months).
This cottage is available for WEEK LONG STAYS ONLY (top rate: $1400 per week). Season 2 and 3 are priced at $1100 per week (non refundable). Shorter stays (or month long stays) are sometimes available during 'off season', check with owner (we'd be happy to try and work with you). Deposit is 50% of rent (balance due at least a week prior to arrival). We personally use the house a lot and only rent 8 to 10 times a year (to cover our taxes and insurance). Our rates are quite fair & affordable and vary depending on length of stay and season. They are also NOT NEGOTIABLE (please do not 'make us an offer' or ask for reduced rates). When the house is not rented then we will be there :-)
We would like to speak with you prior to booking to fully describe our place and answer any questions... we love it, but like we said earlier, it's a unique property. While 90% of our guests have loved the place (with many, repeat customers), some families have found it's 'not up to their standards'. Again, let's talk prior to booking so we can make sure the Whale will be a good fit for you. :-). If you use the 'book it now feature' then please download the rental agreement, read, sign and send it to us. Every guest should fully read/understand and agree to all terms of the contract.
There are lots of extras at The Whale including a hammock for the deck, Keurig (K-Cup) coffee maker (along with standard filter/drip coffee maker), ice maker, entertainment system w/outdoor speakers and Bluetooth. 42' HD flat screen TV with dual-tuner HD Dish Network satellite receiver & DVR (loaded with movies), Sirus/XM radio, HBO and over 250 additional channels. There is a ROKU internet 'streaming video' box for your use with Amazon Prime, Netflix and HBO-GO subscriptions (thousands of movies and programing, free on demand). There is an additional TV w/DVD in Palm bedroom. The furniture & appliances are several years old, but basically in good shape. Linens, towels, extra blankets & pillows, dishes, cookware and an extensive selection of cooking utensils (while not all perfect or matching) are available. The BWI is stocked with extras; dishwashing & laundry detergent, extra rolls of bathroom tissue and paper towels, garbage can liners, hand soap, cleaning supplies, etc. These are things you would normally have to purchase at other rental homes!! A collection of books and DVDs are also provided. There are also several beach chairs, boogie boards, a beach umbrella, a cooler and a 'Gorilla Cart' that you are welcome to use to easily transport everything to the water front! There are two bicycles available for use (you would need your own helmets). Both bicycles, if used, are done so at your own risk without any legal responsibility to the Matthews family.
There is central AC/heat system (Train) along with new individual wall mounted AC units in each bedroom for personal climate control. The cottage stays CHILL :-)
The home and island/beach are 'pet friendly' There are however some restrictions, please inquire when speaking with owner (pets require a non-refundable $100 pet fee). Dogs in public areas/beach/park must be on a leash. There are no additional charges other than 9% state sales tax.
This home is owner managed (not by a rental company). There is on-site direct (encrypted pass word protected) Wi-Fi & high speed DSL internet service provided.
Although I personally (or my housekeeper in Eastpoint) come down to the island between reservations to wash the sheets/towels, make up the beds and make sure the house is ready for our next guests, we do ask that each family/group make every effort to leave the cottage in the condition it was when you arrived and is clean and presentable for the next guests. This arrangement allows us to keep our rates lower and has worked well. We do have additional maid/cleaning services available at no charge if, upon arrival, you discover anything unsatisfactory (which you should report to us immediately). We also have a monthly professional exterminating and twice weekly spa/jacuzzi service (Saturday & Tuesday).
The jacuzzi is a thrill... in the summer, we keep it 'cool' which provides a stimulating experience after a warm day on the beach. When it's chilly at night, you can move the temperature 'up' for a relaxing warm night time 'soak'.
