About Diane & Jerald Sherman

Watching another beautiful sunset while sitting by the pool

Diane & Jerald Sherman purchased this guest house in 2005

Why Diane & Jerald Sherman chose Cantón Carrillo

This vacation home gives plenty of options for any guest, with private entrances, private bathrooms, and the option of renting part of or the entire villa. We wanted to have a place that had a fabulous view and offered the solitude away from tourist activity. Villas Congas is far enough to enjoy the peace and quiet, yet close enough to drive to Playas del Coco and surrounding beach towns.

What makes this guest house unique

Enjoy nature. Everyday you will see something come through or close to the property - howler monkeys, iguanas, birds, parrots. We are on a 600 acre ecological reserve. Walking trails are cut in, and horse trails for a nice ride from the Equestrian Center down the hill. And you have a wonderful view overlooking of the canopy toward the Pacific Ocean. Playas del Coco is a 25 minute drive, and just a little further to get to Hermosa and Playa Panama. Tamarindo is about 50 minutes in the opposite direction where you can enjoy a beautiful white sand beach and learn to surf.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I have had the most wonderful time. I realize that life doesn't get much better than this. Thank-you so much for the opportunity of a lifetime. I wish everyone could experience Costa Rica and your hospitality. I return to the world a renewed man. With peace of mind, and solace of heart. Words simply cannot describe how I feel. I cannot wait to come back. Thank-you Diane and Jerald.

Beautiful views.

Four friends and my wife and I rented Villa Congas for a two week stay in February 2018. The accommodations were ideal for us as there were three separate bedrooms (one of which was essentially a standalone unit with its own kitchenette). The rooms were spacious, the beds were comfortable and the kitchen, although equipped with the basics, served our purposes well as we ate most of our breakfast and dinner meals on site.

The owners are gracious and helpful hosts. They met us at the airport car rental office and provided us with a preliminary guided introduction to Playas del Coco and some of the local attractions.

The house is set well up on a hill with a spectacular view of the Pacific in the distance. There is a beautiful pool but truth be told, it is quite cool. This was not an impediment to others in our party but I found it too cold to be comfortable.

If you are a nature lover, this is a great spot. You are treated to many species of flora and fauna simply by sitting on the patio looking out over the ravine in front of the house. Local troops of Conga monkeys (hence the name for the villa) make their way through the valleys and you will hear them hooting and grunting most mornings and evenings.

If you are seeking a getaway from hustle and bustle, Villa Congas is a good choice; however, if you are looking for easy access to local amenities and entertainment, this may not be the place for you.

Important to note:

- The owners reside on site so you will not have the place to yourselves. I want to reinforce that they are wonderful and considerate hosts and are generally low profile; however, if you are seeking total privacy, this is not the place for you

- There is NO mobile phone access on the property (and therefore no phone-linked data access). I could not connect to Movistar anywhere near the property.

- The owners do not have a WiFi connection - again, no connection to the Internet

- It is a 25-30 minute drive to Playas del Coco where the bulk of restaurants, supermarkets, shops, etc are located and where mobile and Wifi coverage is readily available.

- It is a 15 minute drive to the nearest beach, Playa Matapalo; however, there are no amenities at Malapalo save for the Monkey Bar (which is a good place for a beer and lunch).

- The local roads to and from Villa Congas and the highway / Playas del Coco are rugged. You MUST have a car and you MUST be a confident, careful driver. There are potholes that are the size of swimming pools.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review. We do have all the information you note on our VRBO page and in our agreement as we like guests to be fully informed, except of course the potholes - LOL as roads are constantly in repair from rainy season. It was a joy getting to meet you and your guests and sharing with you the beauty of Guanacaste and the surrounding area of Playas del Coco. Pura Vida.

Great Location to see all the Northern Costa Rica sites

  • 5 of 5

This was our first time to Costa Rica. We were able to easily go to many different areas from our stay at Villas Congas. Playa Coco & Playa Hermosa were close & very nice beaches/towns to visit. We had a wonderful dinner at "Ginger's" in Playa Hermosa. We visited Santa Rosa National Park & went on a bus tour to Nicaragua (we caught the bus about 3 miles down the road at RIU hotel). My husband went Scuba Diving from the hotel & had a great time. The local beach there (Matapalo) is beautiful to walk. We also did an adventure tour at Rincon National Park included horse-riding, rafting, zipline, lunch & more (highly recommend)! We were able to do a daytrip to Playa Samara/Carilla where we snorkled & enjoyed the beaches. While at the Villa, we swam in our private pool many times & also walked up to the hilltop & swam in the community pool, both very beautiful. We enjoyed morning coffee & views from the rocking chairs & always ate at the outside table to enjoy the weather & views. The villa was comfortable & we felt very safe in Costa Rica. We Appreciate Diane booking our car rental for us & Sherm for being at the airport to help us/show us around the local area. We enjoyed our fruit bowl & coffee as well! The Villa is in a gated community & is a private property towards the top. It is very quiet/peaceful. You do need a car to be able to see the area as you are a ways out of town. We also enjoyed 2 of the restaurants along the road up to the Villa (Hello Hanny & Restaurant Guanacaste) for dinner & lunch. Also picked up fish for dinner one night along the drive back to the Villa. We had a lovely stay at Villa Congas!

Our own personal paradise!

  • 5 of 5

This was our third stay at Villas Congas in as many years. We have come to feel like our hosts Diane and Jerald are friends or family. We enjoy staying there so much and love spending time with Diane and Jerald. It is a beautiful location, a well-equipped house and the hosts are helpful but not intrusive. We tend to eat in, but do go out a few times a week and like to try some of the local places close by. We highly recommend staying in this little bit of paradise. From being awakened by monkeys in the morning until the sun goes down and the parrots start to nest - each day is wonderful there!

Villas Congas is such a beautiful place to stay, with some of the best views in Cost Rica! and two very exceptional hosts! Diane and Sherman! They made us feel so welcome and like long time friends! Our stay was short and after Diane and Sherman showed us the best local places to eat and visit we definitely need to return for a longer stay next time!

Thank you again for welcoming us to your Villa, we can't wait to come back!

Lovely home. Lovely hosts

  • 5 of 5

Villas Congas is the perfect place to stay for a relaxing vacation in a beautiful part of Costa Rica. Diane and Sherman are fantastic hosts, making you feel welcome before you even arrive. They promptly answered all of our questions, helped us rent a car, and provided us with activity recommendations -- all weeks before we had even touched down in the country! Their gracious welcome continued the moment we arrived at the airport, where they met us and escort us to the rental car agency. The following day, they took us on a quick orientation tour, making sure we had a great lay of the land, beaches, and local attractions. One couldn't feel more welcome, comfortable, and taken care of than they do.

The property itself is also magnificent. The home sits atop a hill with stunning views of the ocean and much of the overall region. Wildlife abounds. Their infinity pool is lovely. The grounds are well-kept and very pleasant to just hang around. Of course, the home itself is in great shape and clearly taken care of with the utmost attention. The rooms and kitchen are well appointed, air-conditioned, and simply a great place to stay with your family for days at a time.

The Guanacaste location is great, with multiple local beaches (we visited four!), restaurants, and activities all just a 10-15 minute drive from the house. If you want to be in the heart of bustling action the moment you step out of your door then this rental is not for you. But if you want to have easy access to all that the region has to offer -- while staying at a beautiful, safe, relaxing, tip-top-condition, fantastic home (with fantastic hosts) just a short drive away from numerous destinations -- then there is no better place than Villas Congas.

Thanks Diane and Sherman for an amazing vacation!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much - we thoroughly enjoyed your visit too, and so happy that your holiday family vacation was more than expected. Pleased that you found our pre-arrival assistance helpful. But of course the best part was just getting to know you and the family. Hope to see you again some time.

My dream vacation

  • 5 of 5

I wanted a vacation that I could just get away from the stresses of life! I decided on the quaint and quiet privately owned Villas Congas getaway in the country of Costa Rica. The view from the property is simply spectacular!! Secluded and surrounded by the dry rain forest and hear nothing but the birds chirping, the occasional chatter from monkeys and the amazing view of the Pacific Ocean from my own private veranda and sanctity of the infinity pool. This is my idea of vacation! I was close enough to go to the beach or even a short trip to Playa de Coco for local fare and shopping and dancing. I have to tell you the beaches are lovely. It is quiet and relaxing without the hassle of a crowded beach. There is horseback riding available, kayaking and Deep Sea Fishing if you desire more adventure when visiting. Myself, I like the beach and the waves and just recharging my inner beach loving soul. On days I didn't want to go to the beach I was able to just relax in this beautiful pool and sunbathe without the crowds of people you find at crowded hotel pools. This one was mine alone! Cool and refreshing after a lovely hike. At night when I decided I didn't want to cook in the fully equipped kitchen, I made my way downtown to Playa de Coco for fresh seafood and real Italian Gelato. Such a treat. We visited Las Catalina's for an afternoon lunch and stroll through this beautifully planned community.

Vacationing at Villas Congas can be whatever you make it! Quiet and serene or busy with excitement. You are free to explore the area or just chill. My hosts, Sherman and Diane, are lovely people. This was a return trip for me and I couldn't wait to see them again for this year's vacation. Always a smile on his face, Sherman will help you with accommodations and a rental car as you will need this to get around. Diane is gracious and always willing to show you where to find the local Tico (Costa Ricans are known as Tico's or Tica's) businesses. Be adventurous!

My vacation at Villas Congas is always fun and relaxing. I get to enjoy this little space of Heaven on Earth without all of the crowds you find in most hotels. You won't have to worry about hearing traffic roaring by, what's going on next door or rowdy people walking outside your hotel room. Thank you to my hosts, Sherman and Diane for a wonderful time and I can't wait until I can see you again! PURA VIDA!
