Overview

About the property

Apartment, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-5)

This is my second home. It is more a home than a rental. I take great pride in decorating it with warmth and luxury.

As you look for an apartment rental, consider the size (1075 sq. ft. is large), the floor (We are on the fifth floor, US. You do not want to be on the lower floors.), security (We have two coded secured doors and a concierge.) and an elevator (We have one.)

I chose this apartment for its location. It is only steps to the Luxembourg Gardens entrance where there are pony rides, a super children's playground, a world famous puppet theater, tennis and basketball courts, a jogging track, 'petanque' players, chess matches , a huge fountain and a carousel. It feels like home, not a rental, because it is my home four times a year when I'm in Paris.

If you have young kids this location next to the Gardens is a must. They will discover the Gardens just as my kids did -- feeding the ducks and fish in the fountain with a fresh 'baguette', sailing a boat, riding the carousel and spearing rings, swinging on the ropes in the playground, watching a world-renown puppet show and riding the ponies.

We are a block from Gertrude Stein's former apartment on 27 rue de Fleurus. Picture Picasso, Matisse, Dali, Hemingway and other artists just around the corner having an aperitif before they stroll to the Montparnasse brasseries. You can't beat the location.

This two bedroom, two bath, two balcony, spacious luxury apartment is in Paris' most desirable quarter known for its peaceful central location. You will enjoy quiet night's sleep in the cozy rear of the building. There is no noise coming from our narrow one-way street. Two coded security doors to the apartment and a live-in concierge insure safety. A brief walk takes you to the Luxembourg Gardens entrance, world-reknown gourmet restaurants (Coupole, Dome, Closerie de Lilas, Helene Darroze), Latin Quarter cafés, Montparnasse, St. Sulplice Church, the Odeon theater, the Raspail open air market, gourmet food and high fashion shopping at Bon Marche, the Alliance Francaise, Poilaine (best bakery in Paris), theaters, the Musee D'Orsay, Eiffel Tower, Boulevard St. Germain, movies and other monuments. Our scenic street set the stage for a recent French 1920's period movie titled 'Les Faux Monnayeurs'.

Joe, our English speaking local manager, meets and greets visitors with a smile, helps orient you and can coordinate various services including baby sitting, cleaning and food delivery.

The neighborhood is extremely safe because we are near the French Senate where security is ever present.

Everything you need from green grocers, pharmacies, bakeries, chocolate, gelato and pastry shops, cafes, tabacs, hairdressers, a late night grocery store, movies and theater are all within a few minutes walk.

Three metro stops, five bus lines and a taxi station are close to the apartment. The location affords easy access to the entire city and its monuments.

The 'beaux-arts' building was built in 1900 with high ceilings and elaborate wall/ceiling moldings. The fifth floor apartment with an ELEVATOR is a spacious 1075 square feet and has two balconies.

Why do I say 'luxury'? The decorator designed apartment is furnished with expensive antique furniture, oriental carpets, fine bone China, original oil paintings and Japanese woodblock prints. An artist painted a mural in the WC. In 2010-11 I completely REMODELED TWO BATHROOMS and installed a JAPANESE WASHING TOILET. The drapes are custom-made heavy velvet. In the European tradition, one bedroom's walls are covered with blue velvet, ensuring a noiseless sleep.

The apartment is well-appointed with all modern conveniences. The kitchen is new and features the highest quality built-in appliances by Miele and Bosch and a NESPRESSO COFFEE MACHINE. We have top-of-the-line cooking utensils, pots, pans, high thread count and Frette sheets, bath sheets, luxurious bathrobes from Bloomingdales, silver candlesticks, 19th century gilded mirrors, an antique mantle clock, board games and lots of reading material for rainy days. Everything is NEW except the antique furniture. The apartment is wired with WiFi and a new MacBook Air connected to a wireless PRINTER, two large FLAT PANEL SCREENS, a BOSE sound system, FREE WORLDWIDE PHONE SERVICE (except Africa and South America), and Bluetooth to connect to the music system. There are also two AIR CONDITIONING units.

We also provide a GPS navigator to help you around the city and countryside should you travel.

So you do not need to bring guidebooks, hairdryers, adapters, computers , an iron, IPhone/Pad chargers or umbrellas. We have all for your use.

Please be sure to click the "VIDEO" tab to further see the apartment.

You will enjoy your stay. We want you to return.

I CHARGE NO EXTRA FEES FOR CLEANING, UTILITIES, SERVICE, TAXES, ETC.

About Peter de Castro

I first fell in love with Paris when I attended the American University in Paris. Now I am on the board of trustees of AUP and am fortunate to have my own apartment in the 6th. I have had two careers, first as a US diplomat, now as a private banker. I plan soon to work remotely from my apartment. Eventually I intend to retire in Paris and this will be my second home.

Peter de Castro purchased this apartment in 2008

Why Peter de Castro chose Paris

Paris is the most beautiful city in the world. My grandparents spent many months in at a hotel two blocks from this apartment and I visited them there. Now this is my second home.

The proximity to Luxembourg Gardens was a dream of mine-- to leave my apartment and play tennis in the middle of a park in the center of Paris!

What makes this apartment unique

Access to Luxembourg Gardens, jogging in the park, free tennis courts, organic open air market, central location, restaurants, 'Bon Marche' best shopping, Alliance Francaise, Gertrude Stein's former neighborhood.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Here is another review which a guest family left in the "livre d'or":

Dear Peter

We thank you for while we are in Paris and before we return home to California. The lovely chatter of children going to and from school each day, the view of the blue sky every afternoon, the breeze that cooled the apartment in the evenings, the restful quiet of the nights, the elevator, refrigerator, and washing machine, the patisserie, epicerie biologic-- all these splendors of the apartment and "les environs" made our stay at 8 rue Huysmans more than memorable. Oh! and we loved the buses ! While we saw and experienced so much of Paris in general, we will henceforth think of th is little "quartier" as our home.

PS We never watched TV no time!

It felt like we were locals for a week - locals with a very glamorous Paris life :)

  • 5 of 5

Everything about this apartment is wonderful! The manager, Joe, was kind enough to meet us at the apartment early on Easter Sunday - even after we were delayed 2 hours by a crazy border patrol line at the airport. Both he and the owner are wonderful communicators. The place itself is spotless and exactly as portrayed on the VRBO site. Location-wise, you can walk, cab or metro anywhere in Paris very easily. The attention to detail in the decor of the apartment is exquisite - the furniture, the art, the rugs and lighting all beautiful. And everything you need is provided! Toiletries, very nice linens, even adapters and umbrellas. The apartment is very quiet, and the neighbors are all very nice - and talkative :) when you meet them in the hallways. The elevator to the fifth-floor was a relief at the end of days filled with miles of walking to all the sites. The beds are also very comfortable - and HUGE plus! Having a washer and dryer in the apartment was a god-send too - especially with four of us there for a week. My teenage son is a distance runner in track, and loved hopping over to Luxembourg Gardens each day for a quick 5 miles around the park. While he ran, my husband and I enjoyed a bottle of wine at a local cafe. Very important too - the WiFi is VERY strong and reliable (VERY important with two teens :)) Overall - absolutely nothing but glowing comments to share about the place. I will recommend it to all of my friends traveling to Paris on holiday.

This was my second stay at this well appointed, gorgeous flat. Awesome location, living like a local Parisian when staying here. I can't imagine any better flat for my needs. Definitely recommend and will certainly return. If you like to wander and walk you can't go wrong here. Quiet yet convenient to all sites in Paris. Uber, Metro, taxi, all accessible.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS FLAT

A Stay in GertrudeandAlice's Neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

We've stayed in many apartments around Paris, but never in such a comfortable, home-like place! Add to that the prime, historic (but quiet) location around the corner from the rue de Fleurus apartment that Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas lived in for more than 30 years! A beautiful apartment, sidewalks that Hemingway, Picasso and Fitzgerald walked on their way to Gertrude's salon...what more do you need from Paris?!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much Hans. As I said it's more like a home than a rental. I am there four times a year!

Tasteful and Comfortable Home

  • 5 of 5

Mr. de Castro is the consummate host, anticipating his guests every need and want. All we ever had to buy was food and beverages for snacks, occasional meals and entertaining. We only use cloth napkins at home and when we had friends over for lunch we didn’t have to look far. Everything you need for a gracious lifestyle is there.

We found Joe Quismorio to be kind, patient and responsive to our needs and he always courteously bridged the language barrier for us. For instance he made reservations for us at restaurants that we couldn’t book online and who had no English speaking staff. He also arranged our transfer back to CDG when we couldn’t book because Blacklane’s site went down. It’s great to have someone reliable to call when you are in need.

The apartment itself is beautifully decorated and tastefully furnished. That said, comfort and utility never took a back seat to style. For instance the coffee table is glass and chrome; you don’t have to worry about damaging a beautiful antique if you want to put your feet up while watching TV at the end of the day.

We stayed a little over a week and really liked the apartment and the location. We talked on the flight home about whether we would book the apartment again, and agreed that we would.

Wonderful apartment near Luxembourg Gardens and so much more

  • 5 of 5

This apartment is no nice, comfortable, and perfectly located that we stayed here again for the 3rd year and we hope to get to return again and again. We love the 6th arrondissement and really appreciate getting to be so near to Luxembourg Gardens, a farmer's market, Metro stations, an excellent bakery, good restaurants, great shopping, and some of the best of everything Paris has to offer. This fantastic apartment, with its extraordinary location, has everything needed for an enjoyable experience and helps us feel like temporary Parisians, making the most of our visits to Paris. This is a perfect place to stay in order to truly experience Paris. Thank you Peter for sharing your wonderful apartment and thank you Joe for being a great resource.
