About the property

Three Quaint Apartment, 1 & 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-6)

Apartamentos Iguanas is situated in a peaceful, private & safe hideaway location in Esterillos Oeste, just 20 minutes South of Jaco Beach and 45 minutes North of Manuel Antonio.

We offer 3 quaint, tranquil, ocean view units. They're fully furnished and include a/c in the bedroom, cable TV, kitchen (complete with dishes, pots, pans and utensils) oven, range, microwave, refrigerator, rice cooker, blender and a toaster. All three units have a queen size bed that sleeps two adults with an additional full size bed that pulls out from underneath and sleeps two children or one adult comfortably (a tight fit for two adults). The bottom unit also has an additional small bedroom with a dresser and a full size bed. Air mattresses, pack and play crib and/or highchair are available upon request. Please send an email first when you want to respond to us.

All units have access to the pool with a choice of two outdoor showers one by the apartments and the other pool side. To the left side of the pool is a large, covered, ocean view BBQ area. To the right side of the pool is a two story zen tower for bird watching, meditation or a good game of cards. Just 10 feet down the hill from the pool is a secluded Ranchero complete with seating, electricity, BBQ and running water. Perfect for additional outdoor dining and hangout space. A private path will lead you to the beach which is just a short 5 minute walk from the property. There is one general store and a handful of restaurants and bars all within walking distance. And when your stomach is full, you can walk through miles of tide pools during low tide. If you’re up to it you can keep walking to Punta Judas which spans a quarter mile out into the ocean which hosts a protected turtle reserve. Once the tide starts coming in, grab your surf board, head out and enjoy the world renowned surf.

Toward the end of the day grab a chair, kick your feet up and relax in the ocean breeze with the beautiful iguanas and tropical birds on your covered balcony while overlooking the splendor of Esterillos Oeste beach through the tropical trees of paradise.

Our exquisite stay at Apartamentos Iguanas

  • 5 of 5

We spent 10 nights at Apartamentos Iguanas and our experience was awesome! Our hosts, Marga and James, were very nice and they keep their place spotless! You can see how much they care about their guests!

The top apartment was somewhat tight for 4 people (we were traveling with 2 adult children), but since we ended up spending our entire vacation enjoying the outdoor activities, it was ok. The location is ideal as there is so much to do nearby the villa and Esterillos. The beach is only minutes away and we ended up spending a lot of time surfing and swimming in the ocean, when the tide was both high and low, as it provides a totally different experience. If you walk around the villa, you will end up seeing white face monkeys and coatis... ask James, he will tell you where they are! There is also a zip line/ATV park 10 minutes away (Ocean Ranch).

We chose to not rent a car and we hired Alberto, a driver recommended by James. He is very reliable, although not too chatty given his limited English. Since we're the outdoor type, we planned several activities which all turned out to be great. Make sure to go to Perillas, which is only about 30 minutes away, and where you can do some very safe cliff jumping at the foot of beautiful falls. We also opted for a longer day trip to see Poas Volcano/La Paz Waterfalls for a very unique experience! And don't forget Manuel Antonio National Park where monkeys and other animals can be seen abundantly. We also highly recommend Calypso cruises which takes you to beautiful Tortola Island... the tour company picks you up right here at Apartamentos Iguanas. But you may also decide to simply stay at the villa to relax, to swim in the private pool and to enjoy the fabulous ocean view! The setting is very unique and we couldn't get enough of it!

The only drawback of not having a car was the lack of access to Jaco where the main grocery store can be found. Nevertheless, we managed to make the best of the 2 small grocery stores which are walking distance. We used the BBQ area a couple of times and also ate a few times at the charming restaurant in Esterillos - they serve local food which is pretty good and inexpensive. When we traveled with Alberto, we also stopped at fruit stands and bought fresh avocados, mango, papaya, pineapple, etc!

All in all, we were extremely pleased with our trip! I can only rave about this place! If we ever go back to Costa Rica, for sure we will consider Apartamentos Iguanas again! Try it, you'll see!

Fabulous stay at Apartamentos Iguaunas

  • 5 of 5

I am currently spending 12 months extensively travelling with my 8 year old twins. We just spent a month at Apartamentos Iguanos and had a wonderful relaxing month.

Our apartment was wonderful. Very spacious and clean. The kitchen was set up beautifully with everything you needed to be fully self-contained.

It is a short walk (a few minute) to the most amazing beach which the kids and I enjoyed exploring for the month.

Marga, James & Russ were amazing hosts and are always there if you need anything whilst they remain very unobtrusive giving you space and privacy.

We were absolutely delighted when Marga and her family organised a little celebration for the twins birthday. Also Marga was amazing in that she was hugely helpful in taking us to Jaco for a weekly grocery shop and also helped us get to the bus station on our final day.

The grounds of the Apartamentos Iguanas are spacious and allow you to feel like you are in the jungle. The pool is also fabulous and very much part of the experience.

We stayed for the month and did not have a car. We were happy to walk everywhere in the village which has a couple of lovely little restaurants and a pizzeria and two little supermarkets.

Had an absolutely amazing stay for the month, can not recommend the Apartmentos enough. The accommodation and the hosts are absolutely wonderful and we would love to return one day.

Loved It!!

  • 5 of 5

We very much enjoyed our trip to Costa Rica. We particularly enjoyed our stay at Apartmento Iguana. Everything about the unit we stayed in was perfect. We would not change anything. So Beautiful!! Thanks so much to Marga for picking us up in Jaco when our shuttle driver would not deliver us directly to our destination at Apartmento Iguana. She also made a stop at the grocery store for us to pick up groceries which was extremely beneficial. Marga also drove us into Jaco one day during our stay to explore the Town of Jaco and do some souvenir shopping. Thank you Marga for taking such good care of us. We especially enjoyed the fresh coconuts, papaya's, mango's and limes that James cut from the trees on site, as we watched. So delicious!! We loved sitting by the beautiful pool enjoying the gorgeous landscaping while reading and relaxing. We had long walks on the beach, enjoyed watching surfers and exploring the town of Esterillos Oeste. So much enjoyed Russ stopping to visit with us as we were relaxing by the pool. Every day he made sure we were relaxing and enjoying our stay. We are looking forward to returning very soon.

Thank You Marga, Russ and James for making us feel so relaxed and comfortable during our stay.

Awesome place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our 1st stay with Marga, James & Russ at Apartamentos Iguanas. The location is only a stone throw from the beach and is an easy walk to surf, to the store or restaurants. The pool area, the rancho, bbq and the grounds in general were always impeccably clean. A quiet, relaxing and safe place for us, we'll definitely be back!

Great Place to Stay!

  • 4 of 5

We arrived and were pleased to see all that was said of the appartment was a reality. My 3 young kids were glad to find the pool every day while my wife and I enjoyed a book with an incredible view. Having a morning coffee on the balcony listening to the birds chirping away was a wonderful start to each day. The BBQ areas are great as well (pick up charcoals at corner store) and eating in the open air a great way to end every day. The beaches within walking distance are not family friendly for swiming but a short drive will yield some safer ones (Bejuco being the nicest) The fresh bananas and of course the daily "pipas" was a delight. All in all, a very nice place to stay!

Lovely piece of paradise

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed every moment spent at Apartamentos Uguanas. The accommodations were perfect for our needs. The beautiful surroundings and the view added to our pleasure. We were lucky enough to see whiteface monkeys near the beach and scarlet macaws flying above our heads. We miss our late afternoon walks on the beach. The pool area, the ranchos and the grounds were always impeccably clean. Esterillos Oeste has a very well stocked grocery store: Super Sol and a great restaurant: Los Almendros. The town is ideally situated to visit other beaches and natural parks. Marga, James and Russ were the very best hosts one could wish for. We will certainly be returning to this property on our next trip to this area.

Nearest Point of Interest
Apartamentos Iguanas
Car: not necessary

Esterillos Oeste is a very unique place. The beach goes from sand to lava flows out to a point called 'Punta Judas'. There you can walk along the beach and explore baby turtles hatching in a protected turtle reserve. If you look up at the trees in the jungle you will see Monkey's, Macaws, Sloth's, and a slew of other wildlife.

Directions from San Jose International Airport (Juan Santamaria, SJO)

The drive from the San Jose airport (Juan Santamaria International Airport) to Jaco will take any where from 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes and is fully paved with the new highway in place. We suggest exchanging at least $5 US dollars into Costa Rican colones for the tolls on the highway. Ask any rental car agents or taxi drivers to send you off in the right direction, which should be west on Route 1, past the airport. Drive defensively and be aware when two lanes become one, 'CEDA' means 'Yield'.

Note: The first 13 km uses the same 'old' route to Manuel Antonio. GPS devices might not be updated and will likely still have the 'old' route so do not rely on them to follow the complete recommended route.

Once on Route 1 - follow signs to San Ramon, and continue straight ahead for about 10 km. After the second bridge crossing, get in the right lane and take the next exit (Route 3) for Jaco / Quepos / Manuel Antonio. There is also a sign here for Punta Leona and Atenas. Turn left at the stop sign, crossing back over Route 1.

Follow Route 3 for about 3 km. Look for a large Christian church on the left and then a soccer field and make a left on the road immediately after it. You are on the road to Turrucares. There are no signs and it's a secondary road, so don't think you've made a mistake. It's currently the best connection to the toll highway from the airport.

Drive for another 3 km through this somewhat winding road. Once you arrive at the highway intersection turn left BEFORE the highway. Again, there are no signs here yet. Be careful as it's a narrow two-way gravel access road. After some 300 meters you will arrive at a roundabout. Make a right following the highway signs to Orotina / Atenas.

Drive on the highway through 2 toll booths. Then, take the next right exit to Route 34, follow signs for Jaco / Quepos. This exit forms a loop and then you bypass a roundabout to continue straight to Jaco (another 36 km).

Follow Route 34 (also called Costanera) for a while and you will cross over the Tarcoles River Bridge - there are usually a few cars parked before/after the bridge since it is a popular viewing point for the crocodiles lurking in and around the river.

Shortly after this you will see the ocean on your right hand side and then you will pass Punta Leona. Roughly ten minutes later you will pass the entrance to Los Suenos on your right side and then Plaza Herradura Shopping Mall will be on the right hand corner with Automercado supermarket and different shops and restaurants (perfect time to stop for some groceries).

Next you will see signs for entering Jaco on the right hand side.

After driving thru the outskirts of Jaco the road follows a wide uphill curve to the right. Here you find a viewing point overlooking Jaco and Jaco Bay. Once you pass this point the road turns to the left, from here it will be twenty minutes to Esterillos.

Playa Hermosa – Great surfing!

Esterillos is broken up into three towns, in order from North to South (traveling from Jaco to Esterillos). Esterillos Oeste, Esterillos Central & Esterillos Este. You will be taking the first entrance into Esterillos Oeste. You’ll travel roughly 1 km into town where you will see a restaurant and a small super market (Super Sol) on your right. Take a right just past the super sol. This paved road winds to La Sirena Hotel which will be on your left side. From there you will go 100 meters. You will see the second Canada Hill sign over the cage for garbage.Turn right there and go up a dirt hill which bends to the right as you reach the top. You will see a sign for Apartamentos Iguanas along with two brick pillars. Turn right down a long driveway and you have reached paradise. Enjoy your stay!
