Apartamentos Iguanas is situated in a peaceful, private & safe hideaway location in Esterillos Oeste, just 20 minutes South of Jaco Beach and 45 minutes North of Manuel Antonio. (Even though some dates may look unavailable please email to find out if they are available.)

We offer a quaint, tranquil, ocean view unit. It is fully furnished and include a/c in the bedroom, cable TV, kitchen (complete with dishes, pots, pans and utensils) oven, range, microwave, refrigerator, rice cooker, blender and a toaster. The unit has a queen size bed that sleeps two adults with an additional full size bed that pulls out from underneath and sleeps two children or one adult comfortably (a tight fit for two adults). Air mattresses, pack and play crib and/or highchair are available upon request. Please send an email first when you want to respond to us.

The unit has access to the pool with a choice of two outdoor showers one by the apartment and the other pool side. To the left side of the pool is a large, covered, ocean view BBQ area. To the right side of the pool is a two story zen tower for bird watching, meditation or a good game of cards. Just 10 feet down the hill from the pool is a secluded Ranchero complete with seating, electricity, BBQ and running water. Perfect for additional outdoor dining and hangout space. A private path will lead you to the beach which is just a short 5 minute walk from the property. There is one general store and a handful of restaurants and bars all within walking distance. And when your stomach is full, you can walk through miles of tide pools during low tide. If you’re up to it you can keep walking to Punta Judas which spans a quarter mile out into the ocean which hosts a protected turtle reserve. Once the tide starts coming in, grab your surf board, head out and enjoy the world renowned surf.

Toward the end of the day grab a chair, kick your feet up and relax in the ocean breeze with the beautiful iguanas and tropical birds on your covered balcony while overlooking the splendor of Esterillos Oeste beach through the tropical trees of paradise.

Esterillos Oeste is a very unique place. The beach goes from sand to lava flows out to a point called 'Punta Judas'. There you can walk along the beach and explore baby turtles hatching in a protected turtle reserve. If you look up at the trees in the jungle you will see Monkey's, Macaws, Sloth's, and a slew of other wildlife.

Directions from San Jose International Airport (Juan Santamaria, SJO)

The drive from the San Jose airport (Juan Santamaria International Airport) to Jaco will take any where from 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes and is fully paved with the new highway in place. We suggest exchanging at least $5 US dollars into Costa Rican colones for the tolls on the highway. Ask any rental car agents or taxi drivers to send you off in the right direction, which should be west on Route 1, past the airport. Drive defensively and be aware when two lanes become one, 'CEDA' means 'Yield'.

Note: The first 13 km uses the same 'old' route to Manuel Antonio. GPS devices might not be updated and will likely still have the 'old' route so do not rely on them to follow the complete recommended route.

Once on Route 1 - follow signs to San Ramon, and continue straight ahead for about 10 km. After the second bridge crossing, get in the right lane and take the next exit (Route 3) for Jaco / Quepos / Manuel Antonio. There is also a sign here for Punta Leona and Atenas. Turn left at the stop sign, crossing back over Route 1.

Follow Route 3 for about 3 km. Look for a large Christian church on the left and then a soccer field and make a left on the road immediately after it. You are on the road to Turrucares. There are no signs and it's a secondary road, so don't think you've made a mistake. It's currently the best connection to the toll highway from the airport.

Drive for another 3 km through this somewhat winding road. Once you arrive at the highway intersection turn left BEFORE the highway. Again, there are no signs here yet. Be careful as it's a narrow two-way gravel access road. After some 300 meters you will arrive at a roundabout. Make a right following the highway signs to Orotina / Atenas.

Drive on the highway through 2 toll booths. Then, take the next right exit to Route 34, follow signs for Jaco / Quepos. This exit forms a loop and then you bypass a roundabout to continue straight to Jaco (another 36 km).

Follow Route 34 (also called Costanera) for a while and you will cross over the Tarcoles River Bridge - there are usually a few cars parked before/after the bridge since it is a popular viewing point for the crocodiles lurking in and around the river.

Shortly after this you will see the ocean on your right hand side and then you will pass Punta Leona. Roughly ten minutes later you will pass the entrance to Los Suenos on your right side and then Plaza Herradura Shopping Mall will be on the right hand corner with Automercado supermarket and different shops and restaurants (perfect time to stop for some groceries).

Next you will see signs for entering Jaco on the right hand side.

KEEP STRAIGHT ON THE HIGHWAY, DO NOT TAKE ANY OF THE EXITS INTO JACO.

After driving thru the outskirts of Jaco the road follows a wide uphill curve to the right. Here you find a viewing point overlooking Jaco and Jaco Bay. Once you pass this point the road turns to the left, from here it will be twenty minutes to Esterillos.

Playa Hermosa – Great surfing!

Esterillos is broken up into three towns, in order from North to South (traveling from Jaco to Esterillos). Esterillos Oeste, Esterillos Central & Esterillos Este. You will be taking the first entrance into Esterillos Oeste. You’ll travel roughly 1 km into town where you will see a restaurant and a small super market (Super Sol) on your right. Take a right just past the super sol. This paved road winds to La Sirena Hotel which will be on your left side. From there you will go 100 meters. You will see the second Canada Hill sign over the cage for garbage.Turn right there and go up a dirt hill which bends to the right as you reach the top. You will see a sign for Apartamentos Iguanas along with two brick pillars. Turn right down a long driveway and you have reached paradise. Enjoy your stay!

Garden of Eden, Awesome View, and Great Family Hosts= PARADISE!

  • 5 of 5

Just completed a 9-day stay with my parents and what a fantastic choice we made! I had several email exchanges leading up to our final decision and it was perfect! James responded almost immediately to my every question and I just knew this was to be the right place for us! My dad has some health/mobility issues and I was concerned about the steps on the property. Marga and James couldn't have been more patient, or communicative, making sure we had all of the necessary information (even taking additional photos for us). He spent most of the time in the apartment but it was fine. We had Apt. # 3 and the views were ahhhmazing! Could even see the ocean from the bedroom! He did make it down to the beach a couple of days (you do need to be ambulatory for that) and the gorgeous pool and patio made for the perfect middle ground for dining or relaxing otherwise. My mum kept commenting the grounds at the house must have been what the Garden Of Eden looked like! Marga outdid herself with her green thumb and she and Russ certainly have a keen eye for aesthetics. We wanted a relaxing getaway and this location fit the bill! We did a grocery stop en route from the airport at one of the big stores and the two stores in town had everything we needed. Day trip pickups are available and if you have a car, anything is possible. The beach offered a nice mix of tide pools to keep you cool, surfing, and hours and hours of shelling and other unique beach finds. A walk down the beach in either direction left nothing more to be desired. Especially to the right and out to the point at low tide. We practically had the beaches to ourselves! We have travelled to many tropical beach locations and this one was the cleanest we've ever stayed in! It's obvious they take good care and work hard to have everything spotless for your arrival and make sure that everything continues to be satisfactory and in working order throughout your stay! They respect your privacy as their guests but we loved the family so much we wished we could have spent even more time together. (Especially enjoying Marga's delicious banana pancakes!) They are busy with their lives and the business but there was nothing we couldn't can't ask of them, at any time. I felt we may have been a bit higher maintenance than most of their guests but they never gave us the impression that anything was ever a bother. They went above and beyond in every way and we can't thank them enough! May our paths cross again soon!

Great!

This is a really nice place! The apartment we stayed at looked just like on the pictures, so you get what you see. It is a simple but nice and very clean place, and one can tell that a lot of attention has been put towards details and making things good and tidy.

The room has a balcony where you can sit and enjoy a very nice view (one can see the ocean and big lush trees and vegetation are right in front).

It is a very quiet place, the pool area is really nice, and the grilling area for guests is awesome.

The beach is a short walk away and the there are two supermarkets and a couple of simple restaurants within walking distance.

Marga and James are super nice and helpful and were always making sure we had everything we needed.

We had my 18 month old son with us. He is extremely active and fast and if you have a kid that age you can't loose sight of him because there are slopes and stairs and 'danger' of that kind everywhere. One also has to make sure that the apartment door out to the balcony remains shut. Not that for this reason I would not recommend this place. But it is something to keep in mind. Anyone else with older kids or no kids I can only recommend this place to.

I did not realize that there was no internet advertised with the description of the apartments. Without having realized this I asked Marga for the password for the Wifi. She said there was no password needed. I guess without any argument she would have shared her internet service. Unfortunately it never worked. Therefore I gave only 4 stars. Being fair I' admit that there was no internet offered, but nowadays it should be standard to offer this with a rental apartment. Other than that I would totally come back again!

Owner's Response: I had no idea the internet wasn't working for them. If I would have known I would have fixed it for them. I check the wireless internet every day and it was working for me. we had renters staying with us at the same time and the said they internet was working for them. I did not think about the young child. We should have had them in the bottom apartment. We are located on a hill over looking the ocean. If you have a very young child staying with us you have to be watching the child in constant supervision. I had some problems connecting the Linksys extenders to the wireless router that was password protected but I have now figured it out and the Internet is now password protected.

I visited with my parents and two brothers, Appartment form the bottom was small but just right for us, comfortable and perfect to spend time together. Beds, kitchen equipment, and AC were my biggest highlights as far as the appartment Goes, would like the shower sprincker to be different (more straight to you and not everywhere, also for water saving and expedit bathing purposes haha).

The Property is high up the hill of Esterillos Oeste, amazing ocean view, great size outdoors pool, BBQ ranch, and high up sightseing spot for even more privacy and quite times. The hosts Marga and her son James were very helpful, welcoming and easy going. We has fruit trees all around wich was wonderfull, 300 mts walk distance from beach.

We arrived in the wee hours of the morning. Marga; who is the best host anyone could hope for, greeted us with some coffee, snacks and a couple of beers. She made us feel right at home. The next day she took us grocery shopping and helped us with money exchange. During our two week stay Marga and James made sure we were lacking nothing. The reviews were definitely correct. My day usually consisted of waking up to a beautiful chorus of tropical birds, taking a walk on the nearly empty beach, sometimes buying fish from the friendly fishermen, coming back to Costa Rican coffee, eggs with the most orange yolks and fresh fruit plate with some fruit grown right on the property. After breakfast we sit outside and soak up the breeze and sounds of the waves and just....relax! Walking for kilometres collecting shells and stones, swimming in the tide pools, body surfing and even better boogie boarding, watching the surfers while the sun sets, having a coconut opened by James and his trusty machete, going for a late night swim gazing at the stars, searching out macaws, taking pictures of all the beautiful birds and wildlife and of course the iguanas, enjoying the amazing taste of tree ripened fruit in the perfect setting of this well looked after paradise. We went there to relax and rejuvenate, This is exactly what we did. They all made us feel like a part of their family. Thank you so much!

Relaxing in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Spending a week at Apartment Iguanas was absolute bliss. Marga and James were more than willing to help us with anything from the time we arrived in Costa Rica until the time we departed. This place is an amazing place to go to relax and enjoy the pool or the beach which is only a short walk away. The views from every part of the property are stunning and the pictures only reflect part of the story. The small town of Esterillos Oeste is a nice quiet get away if you don't want to put up with big parties, loud music and traffic. It is a quiet town with a couple of fantastic restaurants and a quiet beach that stretches for miles. It worth riding the short bumpy road in. Can't wait to make the trip back.

Beautiful; wonderful hosts!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a relaxing week in Unit 3. It had all the comforts of home and we cooked most meals at the apartment. There were two local restaurants within walking distance as well as two small, well-stocked groceries. You can buy anything you need within walking distance.

The beach was a short walk where you have miles and miles to wander. After a morning walk or trip to the grocery, we spent many afternoons by the pool playing cards or reading.

Marga, James and Russ are warm, welcoming hosts. Marga graciously took us to the nearby town of Jaco on several occasions and one morning surprised us with her delicious banana pancakes.

If you are looking for a clean, well-cared for, and safe vacation spot, this is it! We highly recommend a stay with this family.
