Cabin, 3 Bedrooms + Loft, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 7)
Welcome to the great escape! This property can best be described as "in the middle of nowhere, but with all the comforts of home, and then some". This well appointed log cabin sits 100' back from the shores of Locke Pond in Chesterville Maine. The home has 170' of private frontage, but no nearby lots are developed so you have complete seclusion from the world at this house. If a car drives past the access road to this house, then that could be considered a busy day.
This home is ideal for families who love camping, but are not all that fond of sleeping on the ground. There is a tent platform provided, sitting 25' back from the water. This cabin faces west over Locke Pond, providing beautiful sunsets on a regular basis. There is a large dock (20' long) to access the water from, and the swimming area is raked and cleaned annually.
The swimming area is sandy and rocky, typical Maine, bring your sandals! The water is about 5' deep at the end of the dock, perfect for diving and cannonballs. There is also a swim float about 100' offshore for your enjoyment. At the shore you'll find a canoe, and two kayaks all for your use at no extra charge. There are no weeds in the swim area.
The house itself is 1400 sq ft with 1200 sq ft of deck space. On the top deck is a 6 man hot tub, patio furniture, outdoor table and porch swing facing west. Make sure you turn off all the lights, jump in the hot tub on a clear dark evening and spend some time stargazing, the skies are incredible! The front deck is covered, perfect for enjoying a cup of coffee on those occasional quiet rainy mornings. On the main deck is a gas grill and table area, perfect for watching sunsets and listening to the loons. Most of the interior furniture has been hand built by a local artisan, you'll just fall in love with his work.
The kitchen is completely filled with all you'll need to enjoy your week, pots, pans, skillet, coffee maker, toaster, dishwasher, fridge, freezer, ice maker, blender, etc... There are 4 LCD TVs wall mounted throughout the house along. Clean sheets and linens are provided as well as a washer and dryer.
To be very clear, this house is NOT in a tourist area, this house is a grand escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, that's the beauty of it. If you're not comfortable with being one with nature and need ice cream stands and go-cart racing, then this house is not for you. This house is unique among other rentals, you can't see a neighbor on any side of the house, the only houses visible are across the lake from the shoreline. Worry not, civilization, downtown Farmington, is only 20 minutes away with restaurants, golf, yes, an ice cream stand, a cinema, walmart, and quaint college shops. The ITS snowmobile trails pass right by Locke Pond, which are fun to mountain bike and hike on.
Locke pond is generally a very peaceful quiet area, we ask that our guests respect this. The house has been built on the side of a hill, but grades off nicely between the house and the lake, the last few feet to the lake drop off quick, so we've built stairs to access the lake. Also, the driveway is quite steep, you will not be able to get in and out with rear wheel drive, you'll need 4-wheel drive or front-wheel drive to get in and out. You can always just park at the top of the driveway and walk the last 100' to the house.
The lake is a quiet gem in central Maine. Locke pond is almost one mile long by 1/2 mile wide. It is 135 acres total area and 20' at it's deepest. Guests can bring up to a 25-horsepower motorboat, but no larger.
There are no jet boats or jet skis on this lake. There is no public launch, so you must be able to carry your boat to launch it. In the autumn, the foliage from the swamp maples is simply dramatic, some of the prettiest foliage you'll see outside of the lakes region of New Hampshire.
The lake holds a good fishery of warm water species, large mouth bass, perch, sunfish and pickerel. Most folks on the lake catch and release their bass to preserve the fishery, but there are no regulations requiring that. Locke pond is about 3.5 hours from Boston.
And since everyone asks, the water is drawn from an artesian well, not from the lake. It is quite clean and drinkable. For those who cannot do without wifi internet is provided

Log Cabin on the Lake
We loved this place! This property provided everything one would need. It was comfortable, clean and well maintained. The driveway in is a little steep, but an SUV should handle it. We hope to come back in the near future.
Stop searching, you've found the spot
This is the place you’ve been looking for. Reconnect with family deep in the woods of Maine at a well-appointed log cabin with plenty of room and amenities to make you feel like you’re “roughing” it in a top notch resort. The cabin has two good-sized bedrooms on the first floor and a generous master suite on the second. There are AC window units in the bedrooms, but our experience was the cool Maine nights (even in July) meant we didn’t always use them. The basement has a fun pub-like feel, complete with bar, ping-pong table, big TV and another bed if there is overflow. What puts this place over the top, however, is Rich’s attention to detail in making sure you have everything you need: fishing poles? Yup. Wood for the fire pit? All set. Hot tub, swimming platform, plenty of towels and linens? All included. And definitely take him up on renting the pontoon boat if it’s available – it’s worth every cent and will define your vacation. Couple of notes: you probably have read about the driveway, and yes, it is comically steep. But we had zero trouble with a mid-sized SUV (Toyota RAV 4) so don’t let it scare you off. There are a lot of steps to and from the pond; a peaceful short walk through the trees, but it might be a lot for older folks. Keep in mind you are not going to an area with there is a ton to do (i.e. no water parks, tourist traps, etc). Farmington and Wilton have some shops and restaurants, but you are essentially picking this place to decompress, swim, fish, relax, be with family and/or friends, roasting marshmallows at sunset. There is a supermarket and Wal-Mart in Farmington, so load up on supplies then unplug. Mike and Steph keep the place in top shape and are there if you need anything. If you want the peace and tranquility of staying in the deep woods on a big pond, but in the comfort of a large, modern cabin, this is it.
Perfect cabin on a quiet beautfiul pond
My finance and our dog stayed for a week and September and couldn’t have loved the house and location any more than we did.
The location was perfect, quiet and peaceful and the pond is beautiful and the water is so clean. Could not have asked for a better place to go and relax. The house was amazing as well. Updated, clean and had everything we needed and more.
We will definitely be back. Thanks so much for sharing your cabin. It was a great vacation.
Perfect place to get away, relax and rejuvenate. The cabin was beautiful better than the pictures. We loved having use of kayaks and canoe. Total peace and tranquility. We have always wanted to visit Maine and truly impressed. Rich the owner was great to work with, and Mike and his wife do wonderful job maintaining the cabin and having ready for your arrival. I have nothing negative to say. LOVED LOVE LOVED this rental. Thanks for sharing your cabin with us.
Beautiful, private place!
We stayed in mid June of 2016 and what a wonderful week it was!
Things we LOVED
The privacy, you can't see another house from any angle of the home/yard. The lot is steep, but beautifully wooded. The house it set well off the road.
The dock was thoughtfully done, the area down by the water is wide enough to accommodate several chairs, and in our case a couple of sleeping dogs. The floating raft 15 feet out is a wonderful addition.
The decks! This home actually has three, one level with the top floor of the house with a nice hot tub, large outdoor table, a grill, and a smoker! The lower one is set up so you can walk right out of the basement. The third is set down by the water with a fire pit.
The setup of the home. Two of the three bedrooms have TVs, and the living room has a comfy couch and a recliner, also with a TV. The basement has an awesome bar set up, a couple of great recliners and another TV. It was great for us as we had two couples who couldn't agree on what to watch on a rainy night.
They provided two Kayaks and a canoe. Hang a right off the dock and go to what looks like the end of the lake there is an amazing swampy/boggy area that is awesome to explore! Especially if you are a bird watcher. The loons have no fear of people and when you stop paddling and just float quietly they come surprisingly close. We also saw red wing blackbirds, painted turtles, snapping turtles, and ducks we couldn't identify.
It really is a home. The kitchen has what you need. There are a few baskets of books, board games and a PS3 in the children's (bunk bed) room.
Rich, the owner, is a nice guy. Excellent communication and helpful!
The best part of this home, it's pet friendly. It's very easy to gate off the upper area of the porch so they can hang out with you. The hardwood flooring makes it easy to sweep up pet hair before you head home.
Things to keep in mind if you rent this property.
There are lots of stairs! Might not be the best choice for grandma and grandpa. This is a log home, anyone who has experience with them knows that they "settle" with time. A few of the interior doors don't stay shut very well. The driveway is STEEP. They aren't kidding about that. Unless you are jumping off the dock there isn't an easy way into the water and if you are a big baby like me you will need water shoes, the ground is mucky. In the owner's defense they may groom it more later in the season.
Overall we LOVED this cabin and would be happy to return!
