About The Owner

I'm a linguist by training and occupation and my wife is an elementary school teacher. We love cooking and travelling. Most people think we're cool.

The Owner purchased this house in 2008

Why The Owner chose Puerto Rico

I fell in love with the area: the climate, the lush vegetation, the rural nature of the place. I bought the land first and years later built the house. Now sharing it with others gives me joy.

What makes this house unique

The joy of watching magnificent sunsets from the upstairs balcony and the freedom from depending on air conditioning in order to experience comfortable temperatures.

Relaxing on Business

  • 5 of 5

For my business here in the central mountains, it is an ideal, quiet, up with the sun, relax in evening on deck interesting work in progress construction kind of place. Care taker is wonderful and on call for your every need.

The VRBO directions were totally off as was the VRBO company itself for follow through. I had to call VRBO to get in touch with owner, where VRBO should have done so rather than sending emails that were canned from a clocked computer out of what appears to be out of a call center somewhere other than a corporate office at the base of operations.

Travel in the mountain area is interesting on the curvy roads, be patient with those who appear to be in a hurry and drive like race car drivers taking up all lanes on blind curves.

Watch out for school zones where every parent appears to have their own parking space in the center of the road and block traffic causing a more dangerous situations for the students.

When you find that local fruit stand stick with them, they remember you and freshness and cost becomes a family affair. Be ready to drive to larger towns like Barranquitas or Aibonito for grocery after you get here, stock up on your favorite liquor, wine or beer.

Prepare to be enchanted by the mountains, scenery and just the rural atmosphere of the surroundings. Great place to chill, see the night sky and something different around every corner of area and house.

We were looking for a place to unwind and disconnect from the daily routine. The house was the perfect place. Rey the caretaker went out of his way to make sure that we had a great time during our stay. Great view and weather. The house is spacious and beautiful. We will definitely return!

not what we expected

  • 3 of 5

We were very excited to be staying here but upon arrival we were sadly dissatisfied, first we found that the house was far less secluded that we were led to believe. There are neighbours who during the days and far into the nights played their music so loud that we could clearly hear it throughout the house even with all the doors and windows closed. Second when it rained the water leaked in through the screen that lined the roof, we found that the house was poorly cleaned and all manner of bugs came crawling in at night and bit us all over. I would highly recommend some sort of bug netting if you are planning on staying here and to also remember to keep all of your bags zipped up.

Owner's Response: We mention in the introduction to the house that we have neighbors. We would like to share that these travelers were there on a weekend and a weekend at a special time of the year, graduations!!!!! As well of the fact that we're located on the edge of a canyon and noise travels up. As far as the leak from the very top screen, those are building code vents that are specified for houses with high ceilings as hurricane safety. We will inform future quests. We did have one quest departing @ 11:00am that day and the caretakers did their very best to have the house ready @3:00, again thank you for your comments as they help us grow. We'll remind quests to bring bug spray, always a good idea in the tropics, and to use the overhead fans to keep air moving. It is an open space as you can see from the design in the photos, the huge barn doors open to the view .

Beautiful mountain home

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was amazing! The property is beautiful with amazing views. The home is in the town of Barranquitas which is in the central mountains of Puerto Rico. My family of 6 was very comfortable and we were able to travel the entire island during our week long visit. There are many state parks and hiking opportunities within an hour of the property. The vistas are some of the most beautiful in the world. From waterfalls to turquoise blue water on the coast, it is truly amazing.

The home has sleeping for six, a full kitchen to save money on dining out, and indoor and outdoor dining tables. The table on the deck will make you not want to return home. The home also has direct tv if you want to watch in the evening but with the outdoor beauty it was seldom used by my family. Throughout the home are tile mosaics including a beautiful mosaic shower.

My family and I loved our trip and will definitely stay there again.

Owner's Response: We're extraordinarily pleased when quests have found our home a home away from home. The house is designed with open living space and an eye to having the amazing view always available thur the huge wooden doors connecting to the terrace. The table was designed to take advantage of the concept of plen air, being in the open vistas, we're so grateful that you enjoyed these remarkable quailities of our home.

must like to share your space and drive twisty roads

  • 4 of 5

we had a good stay here, and this is by far the most unconventional place we have rented in all the vacation travel for the past 5 years; depending on your interests, know that many attractions (coffee farms, piedra escrita) require a fair amount of driving on narrow and very twisty roads. there is no guest book to advise as to what to do in the area and we were not able to identify the waterfall, but a PR Lonely Planet guide is available. be prepared to sleep in polyester sheets! and remember it gets quite humid at night....the beds upstairs are not very comfy, but the one downstairs was fine. Once again, keep in mind that even the bathroom does not have "full" walls, so be ready to share! :). the view from the decks is really wonderful though and the house is very artistic! the mosaic works are beautiful and unlike we had seen before! make sure you apply plenty of OFF in the evening (we are still recovering from the mosquitoes bites...)

Owner's Response: There are always contacts available upon request for whatever the quests are looking for. Our caretaker is there to faciltate the quests needs. The quests before have been able to access the waterfall, because they requested acess. There are cotton sheets available, we again would've urged you to talk to the caretaker about it. Yes, the roads are twisted and narrow, adventure time. Our photos are very clear about the open space of the house, the bathroom is enclosed and once in the bathroom the shower is open due to the design.

Ecletic property perfect for sophisiticated travelers.

  • 5 of 5

This was our first inland adventure for me (native of Puerto Rico coast), my spouse, mother and children. All I can say is that this property is FABULOUS. The caretakers were great to us, even giving us food gifts (pasteles!) and laundry detergent so we did not have to buy it. They even had a decorated Christmas tree in the living room, making us feel even more welcomed and putting us in the Holiday spirit.

The property is in excellent shape, the decor is eclectic in a superb way. Pictures don't give it justice. The house is designed like a open loft with the only walled room being the bathroom. The mountain views are unobstructed and gorgeous. Downtown Barranquitas was beautifully decorated, well-kept, with classic colonial architecture. Everyone in Barranquitas was quite friendly and relaxed.

Our trip to the San Cristobal Canyon was interesting in that we gained access through a private property were the owner lets you in with expectation of a tip, also he sent a "sherpa" teenage boy who served as a guide and also accepted at tip the end. There was no hard sell of any kind, just like an understanding. Everything ended well.

Warning -It can get pretty chilly up there. I highly recommend this property.
