Suggested Itinerary: Since you'll be staying at Bison Pines VRBO, just south of Custer, you have an excellent home base. It's about 20–30 minutes from Wind Cave National Park and Custer State Park, making it ideal for exploring the southern and central Black Hills while still being within day-trip distance of the Badlands and Devils Tower.
Here's how I'd organize each itinerary to minimize backtracking.
3-Day Itinerary Day 1 – Southern Black Hills Wildlife Loop Road (early morning for bison) Needles Highway Sylvan Lake Iron Mountain Road Mount Rushmore National Memorial Optional evening lighting ceremony (seasonal) Day 2 – Badlands Leave around 7:00–7:30 AM Badlands Loop Road Big Badlands Overlook Door Trail Notch Trail Yellow Mounds Overlook Lunch in Wall Wall Drug Day 3 – Spearfish Canyon & Devils Tower Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway Bridal Veil Falls Roughlock Falls Spearfish Falls Lunch in Spearfish Devils Tower
4-Day Itinerary Day 1 Wildlife Loop Road Needles Highway Sylvan Lake Day 2 Mount Rushmore Crazy Horse Memorial Hill City shopping Day 3 Badlands National Park Wall Drug Day 4 Spearfish Canyon Deadwood Devils Tower
5-Day Itinerary (Recommended) Day 1 Custer State Park Wildlife Loop Needles Highway Sylvan Lake Day 2 Mount Rushmore Crazy Horse Memorial Hill City Relax on the porch at Bison Pines in the evening. Day 3 Badlands National Park Wall Drug Day 4 Wind Cave National Park (tour if available) Hot Springs The Mammoth Site Day 5 Spearfish Canyon Deadwood Devils Tower
6-Day Relaxed Itinerary Day 1 Custer State Park Wildlife Loop Needles Highway Sylvan Lake Day 2 Mount Rushmore Crazy Horse Hill City Optional: 1880 Train Day 3 Badlands National Park Wall Drug Day 4 Wind Cave National Park Hot Springs The Mammoth Site Day 5 Spearfish Canyon Deadwood Lead Take your time at the waterfalls and enjoy dinner before returning. Day 6 Devils Tower If time allows on the return: Geographic Center of the Nation Monument
Of these options, the 5-day itinerary is the sweet spot. It keeps daily drives reasonable, gives each major region its own day, and leaves enough flexibility to linger at scenic overlooks or add short hikes without feeling rushed.

About the host
Hosted by James or Carmen
Jim is a retired Navy pilot, and Carmen is a retired teacher. We have raised 4 children who are now off on their own adventures. After traveling and living around the world, we decided to settle in the Black Hills. We love sharing the beauty we found with others.
Why they chose this property
The peace and quiet of Bison Pines drew us here. We can sit on the porch and watch wildlife, stargaze, and explore nature's beauty just outside our door. There are trees, outcroppings of rocks, open space, and wildlife. The sunsets and sunrises are picture-perfect. We love sitting on the porch, sipping coffee, and looking out over the Black Hills. We enjoy sharing Bison Pines with others in the capacity of Bison Pines VRBO. During the summer, Bison Pines is grazing land for the neighbor's cattle. Depending on when you're here, you'll be able to enjoy just a little bit of what makes this area ranch land.
What makes this property unique
If you are looking for a remote setting away from others, this is your place. There are no city lights to interfere with stargazing. Cooper, our rescued Australian Cattle Dog/mixed breed is ready to meet you. Cooper is a little shy initially but loves to play once she gets to know you. She is ready to walk around the property. Depending on the time of year, you may see deer, turkey, or elk passing through the property. In addition, we sometimes have cattle grazing, as well as their calves.
