About JOE KRACKENFELS

We have owned the duplex since 2000. We currently live in Florida, but love to travel to the Upper Peninsula. Our 2 boys grew up snowboarding and skiing on Indian head and other area slopes.

This past summer we renovated the entire place. It now is unique, custom and is the best place on the 'HILL' to rent.

JOE KRACKENFELS purchased this house in 2000

Why JOE KRACKENFELS chose Upper Peninsula

I grew up as a child camping in the UP and as I became older my 'boys' learned to ski and snowboard. Especially enjoying Indianhead Resort. The boys also loved the advantage of the other nearby ski places, ie; Blackjack, Powderhorn, Whitecap and small but cute Gogebic College's hill. My husband fell in love with it after visiting one time and bought this place as soon as it was available.

We also have a large extended family and having the ability to sleep large groups is a great advantage.

There is so much to do in the area. Many other nearby ski slopes, great snowmobile trails, X-country sking, shopping in little antique and gift stores and great restaurants. The area depends on tourism so the residents are friendly and helpful.

It is an awesome place to 'get away from it all' The small town 'feel' is so nice.

One of the best things is it's very safe and private.

We also love 'snowmobilers' and being on a trail is a huge bonus. We make sure the driveway is plowed extra wide to park the trailers.

What makes this house unique

All we can say is FUN !!!!!!!!

My family stayed over the Christmas and New year holiday and had a wonderful time. This is the 3rd. time we have rented from "Joe" and we will continue to rent yearly.

They have an awesome "caretaker" who if needed will come immediatley and help us out.

There is fireplaces in every unit and plenty of firewood. My children had fun roasting marshmallows and putting logs on the fire.

This place is great for children and adults. There is an indoor/pool that we could use for a nominal fee.

the ski lift is in walking distance and an added bonus is if you snowmobile the trail is directly outside the front door. (so no need to trailer your snowmobiles)

Nice Establishment, and Nicer Owner

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect location and just great for a holiday with a family of young adults. We had 6 adults, and the rental was the perfect size, everything we needed was provided, and all was very clean. Joe was awesome to work with, and he made me feel very comfortable that I had picked out a great place to rent. We will make this an annual holiday for our family and will rent the same place again if it is available.

Comfortable stay

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for a family ski trip.

We stayed in the main/upper level with a large group. The stay was great! The bedrooms were large and the beds comfortable. The house was updated and kitchen was really nice. There was plenty of seating with an island and table. The house was clean and well maintained.

The owner was great to deal with as well as the caretaker. We called her to ask for some dishwasher soap and she brought it right away that night. The only thing that kept me awake was the bedroom doors were squeaky and the downstairs renters had 3 dogs. Other than that, I could not hear my family snoring in the other room.

I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others.

Better than the pictures

  • 5 of 5

Three families stayed here with 2 kids, 2 kids, and 1 kid for a ski weekend at Indianhead. The kids slept in the same bedrooms as their parents. The house has three levels, we stayed at what they call the main or upper unit which consists of the upper two levels - so this review applies only to that unit. The upper and lower units have separate driveways- so you don't even know the other occupants are there. Beds were very comfortable.

The unit is about 500 yards (?) from the arc-de-skiomphe marking the entrance to Indianhead ski area parking lot. This puts it just outside of realistic comfortable walking distance for adults or kids in ski boots. No problem though, its a 30 second drive to drop off your stuff and get going.

As others have mentioned, it is nicer than it appears in the pictures. Everything was clean and quite nice. Owner and caretaker both VERY nice, responsive and easy to work with. We all agreed we would stay here again, and just may do so in future years.

Great times at a good place.

  • 5 of 5

We rented the whole house for a week of snowmobiling and skiing. House is very modern and spacious. The upper and lower units ARE NOT connected from the inside so you must go outside to go between units. Not a big deal but just be aware of it. Bedrooms are nice size and have comfortable beds. 3 full bathrooms are large and very nice. House is warm and cozy. Good parking- fit my truck and 29' trailer. Walking distance to Indian Head ski lodge which has a bar and restaurant. There is also a pool and sauna at the lodge that you can use for a small fee (except Saturdays). Snowmobile trail is very close by so no need to trailer anywhere. Joe has plenty of fire wood on hand so you can kick back and enjoy a warm fire while watching the big screen TV. Wi-Fi is nice if you bring your computer like we always do. Plenty of great bars and restaurants are close by if your group wants to go out. Joe is a great guy and is easy to work with. We would gladly come back to his place again.

Whitecap Slopes close by also.

Many other smaller ski resorts in near vicinity.

We have a huge plowed driveway for vehicles and trailers. As a result we have a gigantic pile of snow that so children.

(& adults) enjoy sledding and snowboarding down those as much as the Indian head ski trails. You can watch them play right outside your window.

The house has a walk out basement unit, because of this we are built on a large hill. (more fun for everyone!) There are no neighbors on the left side or back of the house.

The pool and spa at the lodge is a big hit with everyone.
