Our stay was okay. The location was lovely but the house was underwhelming - lots of small things broken around the house, humid and dank, don't expect I would return.
The host did not respond to messages before we checked in. At check-in the backdoor to the house was unlocked and opened. When we got into the house, there was rotten and expired food in the fridge, stuff all over the counters, dirty dishes in the sink and dishwasher, dirty laundry in the washer and on top, and there was no heat. There were space heaters placed throughout the house, which was a total safety liability. We reached out to the host with our concerns and we never got a response. I don't advise staying at this property.
We actually did not get to stay there as they double booked the rental. I have confirmed receipts of our booked rental on August 30, 2025. We received our check-in instructions as usual. Upon arrival, nothing was clean, washed, straightened up and there were leaks in the downstairs bathroom. After finding this mess, I reached out to the host about possible solutions, we did not hear back for a long while and it was just, "this rental was double book, we have to refund your money", that's it! Our family drove from MI to have Thanksgiving with other family memebers who made the trip. Be aware when booking Gideons Getaways.
We very much enjoyed our stay. The grounds are beautiful and the proximity to the canal trail is wonderful. Beds are very comfortable. House is adorable. Kitchen could be better equipped. I bought a few extra coffee cups and left them for the next guests.
The property was great for relaxing, touring local history and enjoying the recreation on the Potomac River and bike trail. We had a slight issue with the water heater, called the property contact and the problem was fixed within the hour. Excellent service and great stay. We would stay again.
Comfortable and right at the C&O trail, so easy to take lovely walks. The house is clean, the kitchen and dining spaces more than adequate, multiple common areas are nice, as are bedrooms. Minor issue in that it seems the visitors before us made the remote for the downstairs tv disappear. Connection via phone, text etc can be spotty unless you're on the houses wifi, which worked well.
Wonderful getaway for people from Washington, DC - close, beautiful, historic, interesting

It was very comfortable and the outdoor beauty was excellent. Great location for the area.
Only negative was a sofa couch that obviously had been repaired before but failed when one of us sat down. We have pictures. Made a note of it to the contact person. They stated they would have team repair it after we left. There would be no $charges$ applied (since we did not do the damage).
Taylors Landing was an amazing getaway for our family! It was a beautiful property, secluded area and so many opportunities for exploring and fun with little ones! They responded very quickly to any questions and/or problems and helped right away!
We stayed here for my wedding weekend with our bridal party (7 of us). It was the perfect size house to fit us all and accommodate our different sleeping and getting ready arrangements. Easy check in and check out process and the hosts were quick to respond. Wish we could’ve stayed longer to explore the area!
Thank you for a great stay in a beautiful setting. The house’s set up was perfect for our multigenerational vacation—privacy for the grandparents downstairs and lots of comfortable space for our family of three upstairs. Such a peaceful setting lets you fully appreciate the natural beauty of this area.
We had a very nice stay. The property was as advertised. We had a couple of small issues and the owner was very quick to respond and wanted to make sure things where taken care of.
On the banks of the Potomac River, this lovely little spot is a short drive from Antietam, Shephardstown, Charles Town and Harper's Ferry. It is also only a moderate distance from Gettysburg and DC. Strongly recommended!
Our family thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Potomac River Retreat. From visiting Harpers Ferry, playing the slots at Charles Town Casino, to taking the self-guided tour of Antietam National Battlefield Park, hiking the Maryland Heights Trail via Harpers Ferry, and walking the C&O Canal tow path. To eating at Captain Benders and getting sandwiches and snacks at Battleview Market. And simply enjoying the fire pit. Thank you for the great experiences
The house could have been cleaner or had clorox wipes to clean it better. It was nice and big for our family with adult kids and our dog. The fire was nice to sit out and relax. Dining room table was big and perfect for board games. Overall we had a good experience and great family time.
We stayed here for the JFK 50 race and it worked out perfectly. Right in the middle of Boonsboro and Williamsport, it was the perfect location. The house was even larger than I expected. Plenty of couches and space to spread out. Although we didn't take advantage of it, the yard was awesome. Would definitely stay here again.
We had absolutely the best time. The house was as advertised. What a beautiful setting on the river. Definitely on the return list. Need to try the spring/summer season so we can go tubing and kayaking. Great getaway spot
Taylor's Landing Retreat was in a great location for everything we had planned for our trip. We explored the Crystal Grotto Caves, Antietam battlefield, Gettysburg and lots of fishing and swimming in the Potomac River. The yard was beautiful and spacious. The far back of the yard is gorgeous. The cabin had all of our basic necessities, blankets, pillows, towels, pots & pans, dishes, cooking utensils, coffee maker, ect. It was very clean with plenty of room for all 8 of us. The kids took advantage of the yard with games and we had nice fires. We all felt at home including the dogs during our stay. The beds were very comfy. The owners were very responsive to our emails and questions. We really enjoyed our stay.
This property was perfect for our group of 5 - but could accommodate many more. The kitchen is well stocked. The beds were comfortable and the linens were very nice. Although we did not utilize it - the back yard is huge and the fire pit area was very nice. Short walk to the boat ramps to the Potomac River - a nice place to sit and enjoy the beautiful scenery. The property does not have central AC but the window units performed well….downstairs got a bit warm and humid - but certainly not a deal killer! Great smart TV in living room made dow easy use of streaming movies in a rainy day. Hosts are super quick to respond and were a pleasure to work with.

Antietam getaway stay
This was a cozy place to stay and very convenient for our visit to Antietam Battlefield and to Harper’s Ferry! The key pad entrance code was confusing! The link to the property when I booked provided a keypad code. This same keypad code was also the same code that was listed in the instructions binder inside the property. This code was not correct! I had to search through my VRBO emails to find! Also bad smell in first floor bathroom.
We really enjoyed our stay. There was plenty of room for our group of 3 adults and 4 kids. We had a great time hiking and biking (and caving) on the C&O canal. We spent the afternoons cooling off by drifting down the river on tubes. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook meals and the charcoal grill worked great. We also took advantage of the full size washer and dryer. We brought some fans in anticipation of 99 degree summer heat, but the air conditioning units did a great job of keeping the house cool. The only complaint was that there were only 6 sets of plates/bowls for our party of 7. But we were mostly using paper plates anyway.
Great location and very well appointed. Good directions for locating the property and check in. Was all automated messages
Unfortunately on the last evening, the water mysteriously shut off at 6:30pm. I had no success contacting anyone via VRBO's message feature so I pushed the Contact button put me in touch with an old property manager who fortunately knew the owner. Water came back on but hours later, late in the evening, we figured out that the water heater hadn't turned back on. No response from the owner resulted in cold morning showers. New owner listing on the other site. donpragain.
