Harpers Ferry House Rental Photos and Description

House 3BR/2.5BA (Sleeps 7-9). Pls inquire about add'l lodging for larger groups

Mountainside Lodge is located in the heart of historic downtown Harper's Ferry, and in the middle of Harper's Ferry National Historical Park. Don't be fooled by other vacation rentals and B&B's claiming to be in Harpers Ferry when they are not! This one-of-a-kind vacation rental is located in a 2-1/2 story brick federal-period building built in the 1830's, and renovated in 2004-2005. The house shares the building with a family-style restaurant (Potomac Grille). The house was originally 2 townhouses, and the center walls were removed in the 1970s to create a large open space on the 1st floor. While the house's exterior painting scheme reflects this original configuration and looks like 2 separate units, the vacation rental spans both spaces (see photo). The building was used during the civil war by both Confederate and Union Armies, primarily as an infirmary/hospital, and is a stop on the Harpers Ferry Ghost Tour.

The first floor of the house features a large open living room/dining room, a full modern kitchen, 1/2 bath, and a large porch with fantastic mountain and river views and views of Harpers Ferry gap. The inside space features hard-wood floors, exposed brick walls, an exposed beam ceiling (many of the beams are original hand-hewn), and large windows looking onto the mountains and the Potomac River. There is a TV, DVD player, VCR, games and toys, and a 10-seat dining table on the 1st floor. A highchair is available upon request. In addition to modern amenities, the house is decorated in fantastic period antiques.

The second floor has 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths and a laundry room w/ full-sized washer and dryer, and offers views of the Potomac River. The master bedroom has a Queen bed and a comfortable full-size futon (comfortable for 1 adult or 2 children). The second bedroom has a Queen bed, and the 3rd bedroom has a twin/full bunk bed (twin on top; full on bottom). The configuration is ideal for two families (4 adults and up to 5 kids), 2-3 couples, or 6-7 friends! All three bedrooms have TVs and DVD players and comfy sheets, mattresses and pillows.

The building sits atop a steep hill, and there are 65 stairs leading down to the 2 parking spaces reserved for the vacation rental in the rear of the building. The front-door to the house is at street-level, so door-to-door drop-off of luggage is possible.

Why Jill chose West Virginia

Location! While you will find many vacation homes with an address of 'Harpers Ferry', they are not actually IN historic downtown Harpers Ferry amongst the museums, natural beauty and history. But this one is, check out the map.

What makes this house unique

This vacation rental is located in the heart of downtown historic Harpers Ferry and in the middle of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. It offers fantastic views, historic charm and significance, and prime location. It is amongst museums, shops & restaurants, steps from the Potomac & Shenandoah Rivers, the C&O canal towpath, Jefferson Rock, Virginius Island, the Appalachian Trail, Maryland Heights and Loudoun Heights. Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races is a short drive away, as are a number of Virginia Wineries. There is a large porch that looks onto the mountains, the Potomac River, and Harpers Ferry gap. Kids (and train-loving grown-ups) love to watch the trains pass on the very active rail line and you can even ride the train to this destination, as it is in walking distance to the Harpers Ferry train station, which services both MARC and AMTRAK. The house is bicycle friendly (there is ample space inside to store bikes), and being within walking distance to the C&O canal towpath, is a perfect spot for towpath riders. There are fantastic hikes, from easy to strenuous, right outside the front door (no need to drive). The house offers a large open floor plan perfect for larger gatherings, and the whole home is clean, nicely furnished and maintained. We strive for customer service and try to provide everything that a guest might need, including detergents and hand soaps, sugar, salt, pepper, basic spices, coffee filters, toilet paper, papertowels, napkins, etc., etc., etc. Our guests tell us over and over that this is the most well-stocked vacation rental that they have ever visited.

Perfect view!

We had a wonderful stay at the Mountainside Lodge over Thanksgiving. The house is amazing and the view was even better. Even though it was next to a train station it didn't bother us. My kids love trains anyway! Definitely a memorable vacation we will never forget!

Our bike group has stayed at Mountainside Lodge, with Jill, for the last three of four years during the bike trip from Pittsburg to DC. In 2015 we rode Buffalo to Albany, the NY Erie Canal Trail. In 2017, we will be staying at Jill's again. That should say it all!

The location is terrific and the house was comfortable, clean and Jill thought of everything. We were able to sightsee all day and then come back and relax feeling very much at home. Thank you for the wonderful accommodations!

Wonderful experience in Harpers Ferry

  • 4 of 5

This was a terrific place to stay - right in the heart of historic Harpers Ferry. The house is spacious, has lots of thoughtful details and accessories. Check-in and out is super easy. The home fits the part, with subtle creaks and tons of character. It is also awesome to have 2 parking spaces come along with the rental - you really do need that!!

The house is very very close to a busy train line (and the trains make mandatory warning sounds as we found out - 4-5 per train!) as previous renters have stated. Keep that in mind - the trains come through all hours of the day and night. Again, that is part of the charm and character, and for some makes no difference at all, while for others they need to be prepared for this to take place. For us, we were there and the noise from the AC window units helped dim the sounds of the trains outside.

Harpers Ferry of course has the amazing NHP, and is close to Antetiam for history buffs. We found out the food in Shepardstown is amazing (check out the Press Room).

Thank you Jill for being such a wonderful hostess!

This was the best place to stay. It was beautiful and comfortable. A perfect location.

We had the best time. Only had a couple days to get away. Jill was great to rent from. We could walk everywhere. There were even toys for the baby! The house is beautiful! We did the Maryland Heights hike. A challenge but worth it. A charming town. We did have To drive for dinner one night. The Potomac street grill in Brunswick was wonderful. I hope we get to come back again
