Lovely, private Half Moon Bay is home to Playa Caribe #5. Located midway between the points of the bay, the views from your balcony of the second floor center unit are breathtaking. The ocean can be viewed from every room in the condo!
The Playa Caribe building, which contains 12 units and 3 casitas, is beautifully maintained and provides purified water from our own onsite Reverse Osmosis plant. You will never have to worry again about accidentally brushing your teeth with the tap water. The water even tastes good.
Playa Caribe #5 is a luxury condominium providing all the amenities you would have at home: high thread count sheets, full kitchen, pool, central air conditioning, free dedicated Wi-Fi, satellite TV, DVD, iPod player, CD player, etc. Add to this the daily maid service, and you will not want to leave! Just because you have a kitchen doesn't mean you have to cook. A short walk up or down the beach leads to two excellent beachside restaurants: La Lunita and La Buena Vida. There are many restaurants to chose from.
Half Moon Bay is a premiere snorkeling spot. Akumal Bay and Yal-ku Lagoon are both in walking distance from the condo.
Turtles build their nests on the beach and, if you are visiting during the summer months, you may see the babies hatch and make their dash to the water.

Hi from John and Annie. We are happily retired* in Bishop, California, after thirty plus years living on Donner Summit, in the mountains above Lake Tahoe, enjoying the skiing, hiking, climbing and coping with massive amounts of snow. Bishop is on the eastern side of the Sierras and is a playground for athletes. We moved here to rock climb year round and to get away from the snow. We love spending August in the condo and enjoying our Half Moon Bay. We are in or on the bay for most of every day. *John was a ski school director and climbing instructor. Annie was a teacher, mainly in kindergarten.
Annie purchased this Condo in 2005
Why Annie chose Akumal
One morning in early Jan. 2005, after it had been snowing for a week and road closures were eminent, I decided I needed to get somewhere warm and welcoming. I had a photo of a condo on Half Moon Bay up on the 'frig that a friend had given to us at a Christmas party. After staring longingly at the photo, I started looking for a place to stay on HMB, not having any idea it was high season. Of course, nothing was available. One wonderful travel agent told me she had found a hotel room for us but told me to see if I could find a flight first. Oh, my. By the time I secured the flight and confirmed the hotel room, it was about 2:30 in the afternoon. We ran around throwing things in a couple of suitcases, jumped in the car and made the 3 1/2 hour drive up to Reno with white knuckles. Cars were spinning out all around us. We spent that night in Reno and flew out the next morning. We had our feet in the sand that afternoon. It was love at first sight! Half Moon Bay is an absolutely magical place. One day we wandered into the realtor's just to check out prices. When Tony asked if he could show us some properties, we thought it would be fun to look around. One of the properties was Playa Caribe #5. We fell under the spell of that fabulous view of Half Moon Bay from every room in the condo. We love to share our place with family and friends. It is our hope that our visitors will want to return often and think of it as their private get away.
What makes this Condo unique
There seem to be two types of visitors to Half Moon Bay. Some fill every minute of every day with a new adventure: cenotes, diving, driving around, shopping, restaurants, cultural events, ruins, etc. Believe me, there is no end to all one can find to do in this area. We fit in with 'the others' who just love to hang out at Half Moon Bay. We bring about a million books and, when we aren't in the water snorkeling, swimming or SUPing, we have our noses pressed to the pages. The diving is wonderful, but we just can't get enough of the snorkeling. I should add that another bonus to staying at Playa Caribe is meeting some of the very interesting people who stay there often.

Wonderful week at Playa Caribe #5
Playa Caribe is great property set in the middle of Half Moon Bay. Unit #5 has everything you need for a comfortable and convenient stay, and the view is spectacular! Many great restaurants are within walking distance, as is Yal Kul Lagoon. This area is a snorkeler's paradise, and we were pleased that the weather cooperated and we were able to go out every day. The owner of this property was great about sending information about things to do and places to eat in the area prior to our arrival. It was a great vacation and we hope to return again in the coming years.
AMAZING condo that matches the host! A quiet paradise (in early May). Highly recommended!! <3
I booked Annie's condo, unit #5 at Playa Caribe, for my birthday trip and brought my fiancé, mother and sister. My mom was initially worried about the unit not having a CO2 / smoke detector after hearing about an American family that died from CO2 poisoning while vacationing in Mexico, and both she and my sister had concerns about the potential for crime with a particular concern about taking a shuttle from the airport at night.
Annie had sent us CO2 detector in advance to ease my mom's nerves, but it turned out that not one of these things were a problem -- everything was amazing. When we landed, we took a CARM shuttle from the airport to Annie's place (thanks to her suggestion). It's like an Uber, scheduled in advance of your trip -- a private car with a driver who waits for you and confirms your reservation before leaving -- but with beer. Our driver spoke good enough English to answer any questions we had and was incredibly helpful. We also took advantage of the 1-hour grocery store stop to bring groceries and stock up the condo upon arrival.
When we got to the condo, we were pleasantly surprised at how serene, beautiful and comfy it was. It's in what's essentially a gated community with a guard at the front, etc. which further eased my mom's fears of any crime. It was also immediately obvious that there was no need for a smoke / CO2 detector as there are two exits; the front door and the back door that leads to the balcony (the unit is on the 2nd floor). (If you had to jump from the balcony down to the sand to escape a fire, you'd survive.) There's also a strong breeze whenever a window or door is open, and there's no gas heat in the building, so CO2 is incredibly unlikely to be a problem.
Annie was perfectly accommodating for anything we needed and the unit was perfect for a quiet stay between trips to Tulum (which is busier with more active nightlife). We took cabs for Tulum and sightseeing and rented a golf cart to get around Akumal. There's also a perfect little pool right on the water at the condo (and the beach is a bit rocky behind the condo, so we appreciated that). We did like the beaches in Tulum a bit better for swimming since they were less rocky and more socially active, but for snorkeling and if you want to go home to a quiet place where you hear nothing but waves crashing under the moonlight, Annie's condo was perfect. Lastly, order from personal Chef Daveed and check out La Zebra Hotel (Tulum)! Trip highlights for us. <3
Playa Caribe exceeded our expectations! Our family has traveled around the world but this was our first trip to Mexico. Annie thoughtfully answered every one (and there were many) of my questions quickly and thoroughly. We have a 15 year old and 10 year old and the setup and location were perfect; easy to walk to wonderful restaurants and shops in the central city. The sargassum was, unfortunately, abundant while we were there, which was a disappointment, but certainly not a reason to switch travel locations. We found a great snorkel spot down the beach to the north. Our kids could navigate the water without life jackets (granted they are both strong swimmers) and we were glad we brought our own gear with us. We never felt a need to go to Akumal beach. We all agree the Playa Caribe complex was the nicest in our area. One surprise; the "lobby"...the central hallway you enter to get to your unit...was fantastic and welcomed us to a calming, unique experience the minute we entered. Highly, highly recommend!
Very Nice Condo
Well appointed, great staff, and a really good location.
We are happy to hear you had a wonderful vacation. And, yes, are fortunate to have such a great staff of longtime employees. Thanks for taking the time to write a review!
A very special place!
I really can’t say enough good things about Annie’s condominium! It is in a beautiful location right on the ocean and every night we fell asleeep and woke up to the soothing and relaxing sound of the waves from Half Moon Bay. Inside the condominium is a delightful feast of cheerful color and design....immaculate and comfortable. The staff who work at the complex are friendly and helpful. Also, thank you Annie for all of your tips before we arrived! Can’t wait to come back.
We are so happy to hear you enjoyed the bright, cheery tile. We had a lot of fun designing the tile patterns with the colorful Talavera tiles. My husband designed the master bathroom and I did the guest bath.
Come visit us again! The wonderful sound of the waves will be waiting for you.
Beautiful condo with an amazing view!
This was our first trip to the Riviera Maya, although we've been to the Pacific side of Mexico many times. Annie's condo did not disappoint! It's beautiful, comfortable, welcoming, festive, well-stocked, clean, and did I mention the view? We fell asleep to the sound of waves crashing and woke to watch the light come in. Amazing. Annie goes out of her way to make her guests feel welcome, and we did! We traveled with 3 little kids, and renting a golf cart was pretty much the highlight of their trip--so glad we did. We also took advantage of the grocery delivery. We snorkeled in the bay (really wish we'd brought our own masks and snorkels from home as the prices were insane at the dive shops) and the Lagoon and spent plenty of time playing in the sand out front. The beach at Half Moon Bay is beautiful and quiet, but not the best for swimming for young kids. Instead, we did most swimming at Akumal Bay. The pool was cute although a bit chilly in January, given there had been some cool weather before we arrived. Augustin helped us arrange transportation so that we could get to the ruins at Tulum and see some Cenotes, and we were glad we didn't have to navigate the area on our own. There is an overwhelming number of things to do and see outside of Akumal, and we wish we'd done a bit more research as we couldn't possibly keep up! In the end, we mostly explored Akumal and rode around in our turquoise golf cart eating at the many open-air restaurants and under palapas and drinking tropical drinks--sin alcohol for the kiddos. :). Thanks Annie for your hospitality--we can totally see why you fell in love with Playa Caribe #5 at first glance and why you have so many 5 star reviews. It's a special place for sure!
It sounds like you had a great introduction to the Riviera Maya and the Half Moon Bay/Akumal area. We appreciate the review!
I am happy to hear the grocery delivery worked out for you. As you said, shopping after a flight with three tired kids would have been tough.
We hope your family will return next year to again ride around in the turquoise golf cart. I will help you plan more adventures. 😎
The snorkeling and diving are fabulous! We are in the perfect spot for easy access to Mayan ruins, EcoParks and many other adventures
