About Sherry and Larry

My husband and I are originally from Canada and came to Costa Rica on vacation for the first time in 1991. We fell in love with the people and gentle lifestyle and made Costa Rica our permanent home in the year 2000. We enjoy being close to the ocean and completed our final dream home and rental villa in 2009. We are always delighted to meet new people from around the world and hence our decision to build a rental accommodation in order to help newcomers feel comfortable in any way we can.

Sherry and Larry purchased this villa in 2004

Why Sherry and Larry chose Guanacaste

We searched all down the Pacific coast of Costa Rica and chose Samara because of its natural tropical beauty and abundance of monkeys and other wildlife and yet is close to many services. We can see and hear the sound of the surf and have the benefit of gentle sea breezes all year round. Samara is the safest swimming beach in the country, next-door Carrillo Beach is to us the most beautiful as well as being renowned for deep-sea fishing and nearby Camaronal is a protected turtle-nesting ground as well as an expert surfing beach. Location is close to the beach and town. One of the International Airports (Liberia) is less than a 2-hour drive.

What makes this villa unique

There are many things to do in the area including swimming, surfing (beginner and expert), scuba diving, snorkeling, deep-sea fishing, kayaking, ATV touring, biking, various organized tours including seeing the dolphins or visiting a nearby turtle-nesting beach, horseback riding, ultra-lite planes, canopy tours, numerous options for dining/sunset cocktails, or just relaxing in a hammock or by the pool. The beach is a short walk and the drive to town is a mere 3 minutes.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Larry and Sherry: Thank you very much for the use of your beautiful home!! You are such wonderful and friendly people. Staying in Samara for a week was an amazing experience. Lots of relaxation and playing in the ocean. Pato's Surf Shop was the most helpful. We got boogie boards, surf boards and did some ocean kayaking to the island. Overall, great experience. Thanks for everything! Hope to come back again soon.

This was our second trip to Samara. It is a charming, friendly town that feels safe and comfortable, but yet has not been overcome by tourism. Villa Veranera was the perfect setting to take full advantage of everything Costa Rica has to offer. The views were beyond spectacular, both from the huge balcony as well as the infinity pool! The condo was very modern and well equipped with everything we needed. We even had a family of monkeys come visit us near the pool! The walk to the beach and town was a treat, and we had the opportunity to see birds and other animals along the way. What sets this property apart from others we have stayed at were the gracious hosts, Sherry and Larry. From driving us to town to get our groceries, to having us over for happy hour, they went above and beyond to make us feel at home. We will definitely return to Samara, and will stay here again. It is paradise! Ideal for a couple or a small family. If you enjoy walking and hiking, no car is needed.

Excellent, beautiful, lovely property & experience.

Great view, pool, beds, kitchen, bath and apt overall. Laundry access was a huge plus. Lovely setting close to Samara. Landlords are helpful & very friendly. Samara has wonderful restaurants, perfect beaches, good shopping, and is all local and safe. We'll return again and again, as possible.

Incredible views, great owners and loved the quaint town of Samara

  • 5 of 5

I wake up the first morning and I could not believe that view. The waves can be heard from the balcony. Less ocean noises during the day with all the wildlife filling the air. You will have very warm weather here and 12-hours of daylight. Sherry and Larry has all that is needed to accommodate your stay. Get your supplies in town at a "Super" or the catch of the day from a fisherman then cook at the rental. I talked a local restaurant to grill the prawns I bought over pasta noodles. Everyone is so nice and I was able to communicate very well without knowing any Spanish. This is a wonderful community with no large resorts in the area. This makes the beaches empty and beautiful. Suggestions: Rent a car from the airport. If you are unsure of this 2-hours drive, make arrangements for a shared shuttle before arriving. I rented a car, but make sure your GPS is working as there are no addresses here. A car or quad can be rented in town and taxi service is available also. I was thankful for the car as I could easily get back and forth to Samara and the different beaches. Hills are steep and bridges are narrow so take your time. After all, this is a vacation - so relax.

Perfect location and place for quiet getaway

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed here for a long weekend and it was perfect. Larry and Sherry were perfects hosts. They were very accessible yet respected our space so unless we wanted to ask questions we didn't even know they were there. We walked to town fro breakfast (steep hill but perfect for morning walk) and could hear the monkeys in the trees. Samara is a great little town. Not over the top with party scene but enough choices of restaurants and bars that it lacks for nothing. In the evenings you can watch the sunset from the pool or from your terrace. We saw a family of monkeys moving through the trees in front of our deck. Great spot for a couple to rent! Thanks Larry and Sherry!

Beautiful view & safe, quiet, serene area

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Sámara for 3 nights during our 8 days in Costa Rica in May 2016. Sherry was prompt and helpful with her emails prior to our stay. Upon arrival, Larry was welcoming and walked us around to orient us and answered any of our questions. It was dusk when we arrived and it wasn’t until the next morning (in the sunlight) we realized a few screens were bent just enough to allow bugs in. Best rule of thumb we found: once it was dark enough to need a light on inside (as few as possible so as not to attract more bugs!), we closed the windows and turned on the A/C in the bedroom. We had so few bugs that way, they weren’t bothersome (which is great for Costa Rica). The bedroom cooled quickly enough with the A/C to sleep comfortably. The WiFi worked well for us the entire stay.

The villa is setup as a duplex (one building split into two separate houses, sharing an interior wall). Larry & Sherry live in the other part of the building. In this case, the kitchen/living room wall was the only shared wall (with a door we could knock on if we needed them). So you don’t have to worry about sound traveling from the bedroom and bathroom, etc. We heard very little of our hosts when we were there. When on our balcony, we could see their balcony and the pool area but never saw them out there. I got the feeling they intentionally made themselves scarce to give us our privacy and run of the property. A few times, as we pulled into the driveway, Larry would come to his front door to ask if everything was going well and if we needed anything. They seemed approachable and willing to visit or answer questions but took their cues from their guests (in our case, we enjoyed the solitude and privacy). When relaxing on the beautiful balcony overlooking the bay, I was grateful to have this quiet little sanctuary, away from the town of Samara and the road, where we would have heard music, people and motorbikes.

We had a rental car, so this property worked great for us. The beach was a 15-20 minute walk/5 min drive. When deciding if you need a rental car, think of how often you walk at home. If you regularly walk to work, stores or restaurants, the walk to the beach should be okay for you (coming back is uphill, so you might opt for the $4 taxi). If you drive everywhere at home, this may not be the place to stay for you without a rental car. The quietness and serenity were higher priorities to us than being steps from the beach. I can’t imagine staying anywhere else in Samara.

Best vacation we have ever had!!!

  • 5 of 5

I don't even know where to begin on just how relaxing, beautiful and amazing our stay at Villa Veranera was!!! The condo is beautiful with a deck we spent every morning and every evening on. Sherry and Larry were wonderful hosts and Misha was such a sweet little dog that would greet us daily. We enjoyed relaxing with them for happy hour. The pool was very refreshing after a day walking on the beach and around town. Samara is a great little town that has some really great restaurants, an organic market as well as a regular market where we could get everything we needed.

We loved our walk into town everyday, we did walk back once the steep hill is a pretty good workout but with a $4 taxi ride we typically chose that option on the way home. We did not have a car but may get one on our next visit just to see some sights outside of Samara. We used Costa Rica Shuttle from the airport to the condo, since we arrived at night we are very glad we not, I am not sure my first time there I could have found the place. (www.costaricashuttle.com) next time we may try and wing it on our own. Jose Herrera was our driver and was wonderful, he stopped for food and to show us different areas of Costa Rica.

I would recommend the Zip Line tour from wingnuts (walking distance from the condo), it was a blast! We did the Samara trail hike and really enjoyed that as well but during the dry season it is not as pretty as the wet season. We loved the Flying Taco, Gustos and Lo Que Hay, we at all of these multiple times.

We will definitely be back soon.

Pura Vida!
