About The Owner

We are a recently retired couple who have for years shivered through winter, but no more! In our search for a warmer climate second home, Hilton Head's attractions outnumbered our other possibilities. Here was a controlled world, where long ago, planners envisioned an environment that respected nature's beauty, not destroyed it. Stringent controls have prevented neon signs; permits are necessary to remove trees; noise, and speed laws are enforced; lighting has to meet specific standards - this is a world of scenic beauty, and recreation. In addition, where else can you bike ride on the beach for miles, your roses don't die over the winter, palms and azaleas thrive, plus you can drive from home?

Why The Owner chose Hilton Head Island

Life in Hilton Head Plantation is more relaxed and less busy than other areas since cars are not admitted through to sightsee the area. Many people live here year round, so it is not so transient, or seasonal. People here smile, and say hi even when they don't know you. It's friendly, scenic, comfortable, and readily accessible to amenities, many of which are here right inside the gates.

What makes this house unique

This house has spacious rooms which in addition to the outside views seen through the many windows, and skylights, seem to meld the outdoors with the indoors. We don't feel confined here, and part of that is a temperate climate that has a resort-like feel to it, so no matter the season, the outdoors can be enjoyed. The tropical palms swaying outside the screened porch, the Carolina swing under the portico, all contribute to relaxation. What else do we like here? The sunshine's sparkle on the lagoon, the birds' song at the feeder, quick bike trips to the beach, or fine restaurants, and the factory outlets just off the Island.

Beautiful home and the owners are phenomenal people!!!

We reserved our stay for our family from 9/11/18-9/15/18 as our son was graduating from USMC Boot Camp on 9/14. The Saturday before we were scheduled to leave is when all of the uncertainties of hurricane florence began and the Marine Corp social media sites began mentioning possibly moving the grad date up to Tuesday ( original day of check in). So being we had a 14+ hr drive ahead of us and not wanting to chance missing the graduation, i messaged Colleen to see if we could possibly move our stay up a day and without any hesitation, she gladly obliged and jumped through alot of hoops to arrange all the parking passes for the plantation, etc. Throughout our entire stay, she remained in constant contact with us to assure we were ok first and foremost and giving us constant updates on the storm. Her husband and herself are wonderful people who arent just in the business of renting out their home. They put the renters first over everything and assure that you have a wonderful time while staying in their home. Everyone in the neighborhood is so friendly and courteous in which is something you dont find often in todays world. The house has everything that you could possibly want or need throughout your stay in Hilton Head. There is a beautiful lagoon in the backyard, the private pool is within a 2 minute walk, and the lazy river pool is within a 7 minute bike ride in which Don and Colleen provide in their garage for the renters use. Again i cannot emphasize enough on how wonderful they were throughout our entire stay. We will definitely be back and if i could give this a 10 star rating, i would do without hesitation. Definitely was the best experience of anywhere we've ever had out of all our vacation rentals over the years. Thank you Don & Colleen for world class hospitality!!!

Owner's Response: Jason and Tiffany - Were we really this good??!! You were EASY to help and LOVELY to talk to. That you entered the plantation after such a long drive when the Mandatory Evacuation Order was right then being hung up to warn of Hurricane Florence's approach was not a good start. Some welcome! In spite of disappointments, no parents being admitted to the new location marine grad ceremony due to the hurricane, no assurance of weather safety, even uncertainty about the evac order, you were always calm and polite and genuinely understanding of the overall safety principles guiding all that HH was doing to protect everyone. But the sun shone, you had some beach and pool fun, your grad was able to be put into your care, and HH and you escaped from looming harm. Meeting such a devoted, happy family like you rewards our efforts. Please do send that picture of all of you at our house and do RETURN for a more peaceful stay! Sincerely, Colleen and Don

Very Comfortable Home in a Great Location

The home was very comfortable with lots of privacy. We especially enjoyed sitting in the screened in porch area each morning having our coffee with our little dog! We loved the location because it was away from the busy southern part of the island yet very convenient to many restaurants, golf courses, and grocery stores. There are two very nice pools within 5 minutes of the house as well as a nature conservancy walking trail just across from the house. Colleen was great to deal with and provided plenty of information about the area and things to do within the community. We had a nice and relaxing time and will return again.

House exactly as described, lazy river misrepresented

The house was exactly as pictured! Big and roomy enough for our family of 6 to spread out! It was so nice to have things like bikes, sand toys and boogie boards for the kids to play with. We rented 2 additional bikes as well because we needed trailers for smaller kids but Colleen recommended the Bike Doctor and they did not disappoint. We loved biking to the pools and exploring HHP a bit!

I enjoyed the space of cooking in a larger kitchen than many vacation rentals have, along with all the utensils and pots and pans anyone could want. The only thing about the kitchen was that the appliances were dated, but they worked perfectly.

Our only real issue with our rental was the misrepresentation of the lazy river in the photos here on HomeAway. As of 8/28/18, the picture being shown there with the lush greenery and people floating peacefully along, that exact lazy river actually belongs to a Hilton Resort in Florida. We were very confused when we went to the Spring Lake pool and it looked nothing like this. Don’t get me wrong, that pool complex is awesome in and of itself, so we were perplexed! I sent a very nice email to Colleen asking if HHP had a second lazy river because the one in the picture did not match reality. I gave her the benefit of the doubt thinking there was another one. When she said there wasn’t, I still gave her the benefit of the doubt thinking maybe she had never seen the lazy river since she doesn’t have little kids. When she told me that she has been there, she explained away why there weren’t blue inner tubes as if that was my complaint and didn’t address the fact that the picture she posted of their communities facilities, in fact belonged in Florida. I was super nice about all of this, thinking she would appreciate being informed of this (in a nice way) but all she said was “interesting” and that picture is still up. We would have still rented with the real picture of their lazy river but I would like to see an honest representation of what is there.

There were some issues with communication that really soured the experience for me. While I appreciate the vacation my family had while staying there, if we had to do it all over again we would have stayed elsewhere. Some of our emails were taken the wrong way with very unpleasant responses and that really messed up the whole experience. I also feel like every picture on the listing should be accurate and not misleading.

Owner's Response: Thirty 5 star reviews and now this 2 star one from an SC family with 4 very young children. That’s certainly a peculiar switch from the PA family (Levi review below) who left that Same Day as well as the later 5 star guests, Greg and then Jason all with 5 star experiences Was it our house that changed in those few hours between guests? Or was it the attitude of the new arrivals? After days of next to no civil email responses, I emailed to find out what was happening and received this back: “We had a bad evening yesterday with the youngest baby and in fact the whole week with him and our third child has had its difficulties as the baby is teething and had been inconsolable much of the time and the third child woke up on Sunday morning with croup (the day after we arrived) so our whole vacation itinerary had to be adjusted to accommodate these new issues that arose. I apologize that I allowed my building frustration and disappointment in this trip not going as planned come across to you as rude or ungrateful because that is not who I am as a person. It has been a very challenging week. Thanks for renting to us this week. I hope you received my other email this morning regarding the miscommunication in the email last night and the lack of communication from me this week. I don’t want to leave this bad air between us. It hurts my heart to be misunderstood and unfortunately I did not express myself well last night.” Interestingly, in spite of having realized and written me this, she still complains about the Lazy River: the recreation everywhere here is wonderful: should a week's vacation revolve around inner tubes on this Lazy River? (They were provided pool flotation noodles.) Kids love it, me too, but quite quickly one wants to retreat to the quiet pool 2 blocks from our house or to our palm and bird surrounded screened porch and yard and let the Splash Pad and Lazy River squeals of delight fade away to peacefulness. These folks were certainly too deeply anchored in misery and blaming to redirect their holiday to what it could have been. These were more than Holiday Problems to behave like this. Does attempting to lower our property’s 5 star rating, help them feel better about not having organized their family holiday better? We provide all we possibly can for guests to celebrate a memorable vacation together and our reviews show that. But when people bring their Unhappiness with them, is it possible to lead them to Happiness? Such a sad waste. Colleen

The house and location are great for beach access, shopping, the pool, and other fun activities.

The home is a wonderfully private and quiet location for a relaxing Hilton Head vacation. The owners have the home prepared for your arrival, and a detailed list of options for entertainment, dining and relaxation are at your fingertips. There was a Wednesday morning landscaping crew that came through very early (630am), so I would suggest planning something early on the Wednesday morning of your stay. You also have to take the trash to a local transfer station (12 minutes away) if you have a truck it’s no problem, if you have a car or SUV, I would suggest making multiple trips as to not have rotting garbage in your vehicle.

The local beaches are wonderful. Public parking is inexpensive and always available. Bring a pop up canopy or large umbrella there is plenty of room to set up for a long relaxing day on the beach. There are two pools within Hilton Head Plantation for your use, and the owners have taken the care to leave guest passes for your entry. My kids loved the lazy river and splash areas at the “big” pool. The golf is also amazing, my son and i enjoyed a fantastic round on Dolphin Head golf course (5 minutes from the home) inside the plantation as well. If you enjoy a quiet walk through a natural setting, whooping crane preserve is just across from The Rookery. My family also explored by crabbing and dolphin watching on the local waterways. All of our excursions were within 30 minutes of The home. We highly recommend this home, and the owners are very responsive if you need anything at all while at their home.

Owner's Response: Hi Levi - I'm so glad your family all found so many activities to enjoy while on the island and that so many of them were so close by. There are 3 very scenic public golf courses in our neighborhood very close by and all have casual restaurants also with family pricing. Hilton Head's garbage pick up is so unreliable that when the city advised they could no longer recommend or provide city service, we began taking our own trash to the close by waste site which is clean and organized. Our landscapers alternate their day and times so that every customer will have an early start occasionally and other times will vary through the day. They work such long days in the heat, when I hear them when we are still sleeping, i am just glad I'm not up working at that hour. Do please visit again and experience many new activities and restaurants.I'll be looking for that family picture you're sending! Colleen

Location, Location, Location!

This house sits on a peaceful road with a lagoon, very quiet, very nice. Less that 2 blocks away you have everything you could need or want! Very easy drive to the beach. If the weather had been warmer we would have loved to try the new lazy river....which was just down the street. The owners were helpful and checked on us to make sure we had what we needed. We are 3 sisters who are also teachers so we can be picky. This house made the top of our list!
