we had a nice stay at the fishing cabin on the bay. Beautiful view from awesome dock. Joe is very nice to work with and checked to make sure we arrived ok. Thanks !
Some nice features, too many issues to overlook.
I want to start out by saying the owner was a very nice guy and did seem concerned as to whether or not we were comfortable in the cottage. We didn't bother him about a lot of the shortcomings because there were so many, we could deal with them, and we knew he wasn't nearby at the time. We camp often, have lived in rustic accommodations, but Redfish Cottage didn't meet the level of maintenance, cleanliness, and comfort that we desire for a vacation, or anytime for that matter.
The yard is lovely with mature trees and Spanish moss and of course the amazing view and dock. The location is great if you enjoy exploring the outdoors. We enjoyed many parks and beaches nearby and a fabulous little aquarium.
The first evening we were tired from a long day of driving, arrived around sunset and weren't wowed when we stepped in, but all seemed okay. The T.V. wasn't working properly, but that was no biggie, the owner got it straightened out a couple days later. The pillows on the beds were so worn and flat and the linens were either old or didn't fit the beds properly so the sheet fell completely off in the middle of the night. A bedding update would go a long way.
The next morning we began to notice other things that were not up to par. The counter top was severely cut up, to the point it could not be properly cleaned. There really wasn't anywhere to store or prep food, and even if there was, key utensils were missing such as a functional can opener and a couple burners weren't working properly. I am not sure the dishwasher was working either and it smelled of sewage when we washed clothes.
The cottage needed more lighting in a few places and it didn't help that the windows were quite dingy.
There was nothing for outdoor seating, aside from a few broken chairs. The screen porch had at least 5 roach carcasses and was unswept and cluttered.
The final thing I will get down on is a pretty big safety concern. One of the kayaks had a huge leak. We thought we inspected it properly, but apparently not. I was out in the middle of the bay when I realized I had taken on a ton of water and was losing stability quickly. We had to pull over and dump it before we even got back to the dock. Later I read the guest book and realized this had been going on for awhile.
All in all I have to say if these things don't bother you, by all means go for it. Redfish Cottage has some nice features, but I can't say I'd recommend it, despite the very kind owner and fabulous location
Sorry you didn't enjoy your stay and Redfish Cottage didn't meet your expectations. I did not realize there was any issue with one of the kayak's but will have it repaired or replaced and will also address your other concerns.
Beautiful Surroundings and Abundant Wildlife
This section of the panhandle has numerous parks, beaches, beautiful views, and abundant wildlife. The boardwalk dock is a convenient way to enjoy the natural surroundings as well as the constellations at night. We had one issue with the cabin but Joe, the owner, was quick to make it right for us. One suggestion, call right before your arrival to ensure that the cabin is ready for you.
Great fishing and crabbing
At low tide it is just a mud flat, but at high tide the fishing is great, caught sharks, red fish, sea trout, flounder, sting rays and catfish. While I fished my wife caught dozens of blue crabs with a chicken wing in a basket. The cottage itself was clean and comfortable set up for fishing, it got my wife's approval which is all that mattered. Alligator point is remote which is what we were looking for. We never made it to the beach it was too much fun just hanging out on the dock.
Affordable accomodations with a touch of home!
We spent a week at Redfish Cottage and it was really nice. We had my wife, daughter and her 3 children and they all didn't want to leave when the time came. Inside the cottage is clean has wifi, cable and comfortable places to relax. The kitchen area has all you need to make home cooked meals with a stove, microwave, coffee pot, toaster and a dishwasher for cleanup. The double stack washer dryer sits right there too and you can multi task your chores. AC in both bedrooms and the family room are cold (nice!)The fishing dock is absolutely awesome! We did short drives to area attractions. Gulf Specimen Aquarium in Panacea and Wakula Springs State park are easy drives and a must see. Walmart Superstore is12 miles away and has it all, but Crum's in Panacea also has lots and prices are fair. Make sure you plan on bug spay the no-see-ums can be tough and this is on the wild side so paying attention to your surroundings in FL is always wise as there is nature nearby (bears, reptiles etc) Overall a wonderful scenic, quiet experience close to miles of beautiful beaches. There are two free parking access sites to the beaches as you go out onto Alligator Point with walkway or you can go to Baldpoint State Park which has a small fee for parking. Thank you Joe Fejes for a great vacation!
very private getaway
we stayed for 5 days, it was awesome, this is not a resort it is private, what you see is what you get, we loved it, we saw 1 other person from the house and heard one person call his dog, never talked to anyone around the house, there was just no one around. made the stay great. was able to catch fish and crab everyday from the dock behind the house, eat fresh seafood for supper every day. we will go back it was just an awesome get away. Joe the owner even called to make sure we made it safe, it says a lot about the owner. looking forward to going back.
