About Lois and Maurice Woods

We are a family of four who have grown to a family of 10 when we include our married children and grandchildren. All our children and grandchildren have worked for us in our nearby businesses. One of our hobbies is renovating buildings. This lodge is one of those hobbies. Just 2 hours from Colorado Springs, this lodge is our refuge and reward for all our hard work. We absolutely love it here because it is a place of complete tranquility and peace. We love gathering with family and friends and realized it would be a perfect meeting place after sharing holidays with up to 30 of our extended family here in Colorado. In the days of the Spanish Conquistadores the valley was known as La Mojada-the “Wet One”. Today the Wet Valley is part of a Scenic Byway-Frontier Pathway with over 323 days of sunshine. “La Mojada”, Custer County, Westcliffe, Colorado, Sangre de Cristos-whatever name you use for this place, all of them conjure up the time and spirit of the Old West. With a history of silver, gold and cattle ranching-where such names as Bull Domingo Ranch are part of the local color, the Lakeshore Lodge on Lake DeWeese in Westcliffe, Colorado stands apart from the rest. When our family came to Colorado over forty years ago, we were searching for a weekend retreat large enough to shelter our family and all the grand children we hoped to have someday. We looked for a place of comfort and quiet close enough to drive after a long week running our family business. We found it in Westcliffe and over the years we have saved and built and created a place with our own hands. A place we think of as just about the most beautiful and most restful in our beloved Colorado. Today we are blessed-better than we deserve-all together there are more of us, give or take a few friends some of the grandchildren are always asking to bring.

Lois and Maurice Woods purchased this lodge in 1992

Why Lois and Maurice Woods chose Westcliffe

“Simple Pleasures-Profound Peace” Our beloved “Wet Valley” has changed so little over time. We watched others towns all change beyond recognition. Not our Westcliffe. With all of its beauty, the biggest change has been the designation of our lake as a state wildlife reserve and the area as a Frontier Pathway-Scenic Byway ensuring they remain unchanged in perpetuity. Westcliffe is known as the place where successful people come to be regular Joe’s. That sums it up. Nobody puts on airs in Westcliffe. Remember what “It” was in the Billy Crystal movie “City Slickers”? If you get “It”, if you understand what is important in life- hard work, playing hard and the love of friends and family, then you will “get” Westcliffe and come to think of it as part of your family history. We chose to purchase the property in Westcliffe because we could own the land and waterfront. We knew that this would always be so because the Lake has now been closed to further development and designated as a state wildlife refuge. Its proximity to Cripple Creek sold us on the place, it is close to home. Finally, Westcliffe is one of the most beautiful spots in Colorado! There are some cabins near the lake, there are only three families that own their land and beach on the lake.

Our favorite guests are folks who like rustic mountain cabins, love wildlife, campfires and low-key vacations. Understand that manicured lawns with non-native flower beds are NOT part of a wildlife refuge. This is not a place if you don't understand that birds need grass seeds and bugs to eat. This is not the place for you if you are not charmed by our muskrats feeding at sunset or a harmless gopher snake. This is not the place for you if you need a sanitized Disneyland. The lodge is clean, comfortable and cozy. It is our home-not a hotel. You will have everything our family wants in a vacation rental.

What makes this lodge unique

We enjoy all of the fruits of the valley when shopping for fresh produce and meats. We like to cook family meals outdoors, take long walks, swim and fish in the lake, and dip in the pool. We also enjoy family game nights. Simple and satisfying. Gather together easily in 7 bedrooms, 6 baths, kitchen, a great room, media room and loft Down at the Lake Meeting/Recreation room there are over 150 ft of waterfront, kayaks and paddle boats for exploring the 10 miles of shoreline or trolling for fish. There’s a fireplace, pool/ping pong table and a few vintage arcade games the kids have collected over the years. (We’ve even been known to banish the personal electronics and engage the grandchildren in spirited board games or the excitement of our collection of vintage jigsaw puzzles!) Once the stars come out, strike up the fiddle or unroll your projector screen. We’ve created an outdoor amphitheater perfect for campfire programs, outdoor movies or singing songs under the stars.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our family gathered to celebrate the wedding of my granddaughter in Westcliffe. Our sincere thanks for sharing your great accommodations and all the great possessions that were fun to look at and enjoy. All your nature items, the pictures (especially in the wedding room), antiques and just the special area were an addition to our fun and enjoyment. This place will always be a great spot in our memory bank.

Grossly not taken care of

  • 1 of 5

Our family of 19 were so excited to come and stay at this property. However, it is not listed accurately at all. Most of the windows have no screens or broken ones. This was a problem at night when the house was so hot, but we could not open windows. A cabinet door was not installed properly and it fell and hit my 6'4" brother in the head and cut his head, the screen doors in the home and game room were broken, and hanging in such a way that they hit your head if you walked thru the door. A kitchen door lock was broken. Refrigerator door would not stay shut. The linens were dirty upon arrival, as were the showers in 2 of the bathrooms. All the dishes in the cabinets had to be re-washed, they were put away dirty- dishwasher DOES NOT WORK. When I spoke to owner, she told me how to take it apart and clean it, which I did, but it still did not work. One of the showers has a broken shower head, All dishes had to be washed by hand. The red canoe (we discovered after my niece and her husband put their 2 young children in it to go out on the lake ) began to sink as it has a hole in it. Most of the paddles for the other boats are broken.Ping pong is the only game working. Two of the large patio doors have cracked windows, when I called the owner she stated " yes, we know, we really did not want to put in the money to have them fixed" We had 5 children under the age of 8 that easily could have been hurt had they touched the cracked glass. We had numerous issues with the pool. Three of my family members spent hours trying to stop it from draining as the owner claimed the pool man was not available. When talking to the owner by phone, she was clearly non compliant. Her excuse was that "we are 1000 miles away in Iowa and there is nothing we can do." We got the distinct impression that the owners do not care about the property. All they care about is getting their rental fee. They never offered to re-reimburse us for any of the $1000's of dollars we spent to rent a house that was NOT as advertised. When talking with maintenance men that finally came to fix a pool they knew nothing about, it was made clear that even their maintenance people realize that owners rent this house NOT AS ADVERTISED. My entire family was so very disappointed with the property, with the owners not caring, and with the house in general. None of us have EVER had this experience with VRBO before. We were a bit appalled that this home is not taken care of and yet rented regularly.

Owner's Response: I am simply floored by these comments, most of which are patently untrue. and are too ridiculous to warrant a response. Our cleaning lady is very meticulous and washes all of the linens and remakes every bed, whether or not they have been slept in. These people went down underneath our pool and broke the handle on the sand filter in their attempts to raise the temperature of the pool, which is set at the recommended temperature of 82-84 degrees. They then called us and said water was spewing out, at which point we sent our maintenance man down to handle the situation. The pool was repaired and re- filled within a day. The guests were told not to raise the temperature of the pool, but they did so anyway, and upon their departure we found the pool at 94 degrees, which is unhealthy and encourages algae growth. In all, we sent maintenance people out three times to address any concerns they might have had, and it was reported to us that they were rude and uncooperative. Our maintenance man was not allowed in the kitchen to fix the door which "fell off", but when he was able to fix it after they left he said that the hinges were intact, but it appeared that someone had exerted a great mount of downward pressure which caused the door to come apart even though it was nailed and glued. These, by the way, are expensive custom made cabinets. I am not sure why they felt that the windows could not be opened, because we have a clerestory over the living room, and all the windows are screened & fully operational, and with our fan system the room is always comfortable. Please read all of our reviews, which are very positive. The people who came directly after this group were thrilled and have already booked again for next year. We go out of our way to provide our guests with a positive experience and I think our record attests to this. We did return the damage deposit that these people paid, even though the damage they did to the pool far exceeded the amount of that deposit. I feel we did everything we could to try to please them, but when people are looking for "something for nothing" no amount of effort will satisfy them.

Absolute Perfect for our 3 generational family of 21, plus dogs!

  • 5 of 5

HUGE family friendly house with really comfortable beds, loads of bathrooms and big overstuffed couches and chairs everywhere.

All decks look out over the lake where bird watching is wonderful! Huron and pelicans in flocks, humming birds, finches, swallows abound.

The kids were in perpetual motion morning till bedtime..... without ever leaving the property! Kayaks, paddle boats and canoes were in the lake by 8:00am and again in evening. The pool provided non stop entertainment all day. Large stash of vcr movies made ‘quiet time’ in afternoon easy. Homemade and BBQ dinners followed by games in the evening.

Kids all exhausted and asleep in downstairs beds by 9:00pm. Sweet grown-up time on the deck with beautiful light over Sangra de Cristo’s at sunset.... Ahhhhhh.

Everyone agreed, “This is it! Let’s come here every reunion😊?

We were here during a streak of 90+ to 100+ degrees in Denver. The temperature at the lake was a slice of heaven. Every night was cool and breezy, great for sleeping.

Note: There were some things that need a few repairs mostly in the pool / rec. room area. We bought a tank of gas for bbq grill and got it working. The trim around pool needs some refinishing (we had 2 popped pool floats and a sliver in a foot). But everything about this place suited our family just perfectly.

Perfect for our large extended family.

  • 5 of 5

This is not a four star hotel, but was perfect for us. Parents, grandparents, teenage grandchildren, and the little grands had a wonderful time. Our time together went all too fast. It is close enough for White Water Rafting trips down the Arkansas River, some great hiking in the mountains, fishing and canoeing on the lake, and plenty of time and space just hanging together eating and making meals. The grands all want to do it again.

Great place, great location

We had a great time staying here - we had a family reunion and it accommodated everyone without feeling cramped. The rec hall was a great place to hang out.

The only negative was that they need a better cleaning service.

Perfect getaway for a large laid back group

  • 5 of 5

The house is a bit quirky and has a few things that don’t work perfectly, but it was perfect for our New Years gathering. I’m delighted we chose this property as it offered a ton of space a huge commercial kitchen beautiful views, and most anything you might need. We loved it.

Great great weekend!!!!

  • 5 of 5

My family had such memorial time! The facility was amazing! There was quite a few families there, and yet we never felt under foot of the other. My only regret was that we didn't reserve it for longer!!! The accommodations were amazing, if you forgot something, it was there! We had every thing we needed, all the activities, you truly never needed to leave to find something to do! With the rec center, the boats, the lake...This was the most perfect weekend to send my son off for Afghanistan. Thank you Mr & Mrs woods for giving our family the most perfect weekend!
