Only minutes from The University of the South, St. Andrew's-Sewanee School, St. Mary's Retreat Center and Monteagle, Aerie is the perfect retreat on the Cumberland Plateau.
More than just a cabin in the woods, Aerie is a recently-refurbished 3,000-square-foot wood house that blends in with the trees on a 13-acre site on the Cumberland Plateau. Set on the edge of a bluff with a spectacular view of mountains and trees and with two decks for viewing them, Aerie offers respite from everyday life.
No matter what the season, weather or time of day, the view is always spectacular.
When you wind down the long driveway through the woods, you know you’ve come to a special place. Relax in the sunroom and watch the chickadees, titmice and nut-hatches on the feeder about a foot outside the window. Explore the shelves of books in the library/office. Play games or do puzzles on the balcony overlooking the living room. Watch movies from the selection in the great room upstairs. Or do them all!
The poplar-paneled master bedroom has a California king bed (slighter narrower and longer than a regular king) and a master bathroom with a step-in shower. The library/office has a day bed and a trundle bed. In addition, there is a sofa sleeper, so the house can sleep up to 10 if beds are shared. There is a half bath downstairs. The dining table seats eight, and there is a card table and four TV tables; there is a table on the balcony upstairs. The kitchen is fully equipped. The living room, laundry room and sunroom are also downstairs.
Upstairs is the blue bedroom (queen bed), the yellow bedroom (queen bed), the balcony, a great room and a bathroom. Upstairs or down, all of the rooms have views—of the far-off mountains or the nearby trees—and there are hand-made crafts and original paintings throughout the house.
The Surrounding Community
There is much to do on the mountain. During the school year, The University of the South offers theater and music performances, as well as art exhibits. Craft fairs are held the Saturday before Thanksgiving, in May and on the Fourth of July. The Sewanee Summer Music Center is held four weeks in the summer and hosts numerous performances. Shakerag Craft Workshops are held in June at St. Andrews-Sewanee School.
For hikers, there is the 18-mile Perimeter Trail on the University of the South domain, as well as South Cumberland State Park (which includes Fiery Gizzard, Savage Gulf, the Stone Doors, and the Sewanee Natural Bridge, a mile from Aerie) with its many hiking opportunities, and other natural areas. Woods Reservoir and Tim’s Ford are nearby for boaters. Golfers will enjoy the Sewanee Golf course. There are a number of dining choices in Sewanee, Cowan, Winchester and Monteagle. For the attractions of the big city, Chattanooga is 45 minutes away, Nashville is 1.5 hours, Birmingham is 2.5 hours, and Atlanta is 3 hours.
You must be at least 25 to rent Sewanee Aerie, and you must be on-site. Three-night minimum for University of the South Homecoming weekend, Family weekend and for national holidays. Four-night minimum for University of the South graduation.
There is a high bluff in front of the house, and there is no fence, so the house may not be appropriate for small children. In fact, everyone needs to be cautious near the cliff!

I grew up in Sewanee, one of the few who can claim that! I went to Sewanee Military Academy and spent the last three years of college at the University of the South. The mountain is my spiritual home.
The Owner purchased this house in 2009
There is so much to do on the mountain--hiking, biking, eating, camping, arts and theater through the University and, my personal favorite, just sitting.
We wanted you to know how much we enjoyed your family's beautiful home this weekend. I did not have time to thank you in the guest book. The house is so warm and inviting. I especially loved the artwork and stunning view! The wedding was so lovely and we had perfect weather...Again thank you for letting us rent your wonderful home.
Aerie was such a wonderful holiday weekend getaway for us. The house was beautiful and spacious (the pictures don't do it justice). Each morning we woke up and had our coffee overlooking the beautiful mountains. We were a group of 4 couples and felt that the house was spacious and large enough for us to do our thing or stay together if we wanted to. Anyone who is looking for a great time should consider this place. The owner from the start was very honest and helpful! We had a wonderful and very relaxing weekend at Aerie, would highly recommend!
Aerie is a hidden gem in Sewanee. With an awe-inspiring view of the valley and rows of distant mountains -- without another house in site -- you are treated a private retreat. Yet you are relatively close to the University, hiking trails, and excellent restaurants (we enjoyed Ivy Wild and a Singapore restaurant next door). The house is both cozy and spacious, with lots of separate areas for guests to read or to socialize. In the morning, you can sip coffee and watch birds flying into the feeders, while gazing at the mountains. There's a well-equipped kitchen (unlike some rentals) where you can actually cook good meals and enjoy them around a large dining table that looks out at the stunning view. In addition to the main deck, there are also decks off two bedrooms overlooking the view. There are comfortable homey touches. One of my favorite little amenities are the large hooks in the blue bedroom that you can hang clothes, plus places for suitcases. I also like the books, games and jigsaw puzzles around the house. The wifi worked well too. This is a place where people can relax and reflect. We'll be back!
The Aerie was a perfect place for us for a weekend gathering of 6 friends. We had plenty of room to disperse if we wanted to, but we tended to congregate on the deck as we overlooked a view across the ridges. We enjoyed the coming and going of the birds, and we had numerous options for hikes. Quiet and serene, with lots of restaurants and things to do nearby. The house had lots of books, movies, and games, and the kitchen was exceptionally well-equipped. There were pottery pieces, paintings, and metal sculptures throughout.
Cindy was a great hostess and gave us all the information we needed for a wonderful stay. it was a special place, and we will be back, for sure.
We sat around the window watching the clouds coming and going with the rain and would run outside for a walk, tour or hike when there were breaks in the weather. The Natural Bridge, the blue trail hike from The Cross, All Saints Chapel at Sewanee, Templeton Library, St. Mary's Retreat and convent, Mountain Outfitters, Shenanigans, Crust, High Point, Monteagle Assembly and Lemon Fair have been checked off our list.
It was a great place to gather. It was cozy and like being in an art gallery. We were Chattanooga, Memphis and Brooklyn on the mountain top! We will go back. I did not recommend children or teenagers because we had no experience with that. There are movies and games and books galore though.
I cannot say enough good things about our experience staying at Aerie Sewanee and dealing with the owner, Cindy.
First of all, Cindy was incredibly professional, responsive and easy to deal with in all matters of the rental. Having rented several vacation houses directly from owners before, this is not always the case and I think it is an important part of the overall experience. Cindy definitely gets an A+ in this department!
Secondly, the house and the setting are just beautiful, more so than I expected. The house is nestled in a private woods and the views of the surrounding mountains (which you can enjoy from a nice-sized deck or one of the balconies of the second floor bedrooms) are unobstructed. The house itself is very nicely decorated and comfy, with multiple comfortable sitting areas to read or just take in the view. The kitchen is huge and well-stocked with equipment (a "must" for me and my family of cooks).
I staid at Aerie Sewanee with my family (husband, father, sister and one of her children). Everyone felt instantly at home as soon as we walked in the door, and I am sure you will too. You won't want to leave!
I will stay at Aerie every time I return to the mountain.
It is absolutely gorgeous, best house I have ever rented, and I really can't think of a better location on the mountain.
Plus, all the cooking tools available in the house made it really nice for us since we like to cook.
That was definitely an added bonus to the post card view!
