Life jackets are provided and required for all boaters. Lake is seasonal and is drained from November (depending on rainy season) to mid-April. Nevada City: The Spring and Fall in Nevada City are not to be missed, this small Gold Mining town is a definite destination for a week (or weekend) of fun. There are several wineries in the area as well as many fine restaurants, and antique stores. Both Empire Gold Mine and Malakoff Diggings are open for tours. Grocery stores, hospital and other services less than 5 miles away.
SUMMER USE: April, May and June are my favorite months Watanda, the days are warm and evenings are long. There are numerous lakes in the area and Yuba River is 3 miles away. Hwy 20 has many Equestrian trails and staging areas. The fairgrounds is close by and has a variety of antique and quilt shows, horse events and home shows.
WINTER USE: Nevada City and Grass Valley both have weekly Christmas Fairs in December offering many local artisans. Great location for Tahoe skiers who do not want to pay resort prices. Cross country skiing 45 minutes away on Hwy 20, snow play less than 20 minutes up Hwy 20. Cabin at 2500 ft elevation and is located off main road which is plowed but has long gravel/dirt driveway. There is parking at the road entrance if snow is a problem, but rarely is. Saucer sleds and snow pants available in most sizes from children size 6 to adult 2x. Scattered sizes of boots, gloves and hats.
PETS: Well behaved owners with good citizen dogs (2 dog limit) are welcome. Please bring their own food dishes and towels. Pets cannot be left unattended unless crated. Please help us to remain pet friendly by keeping pets off furniture and using door gates as needed. Dogs must have current rabies vacinations. Husband John is retired from California Dept of Corrections and I am a registered nurse. Both of us love being outdoors and are blessed to have had the opportunity to acquire Watanda Lodge which will someday be our retirement home.
Kathryn McNitt purchased this cabin in 2002
I worked at the summer camp next door for 20 years. My husband and I always wanted a vacation home on water and the opportunity to purchase Camp Watanda dropped in our lap.
Sitting on the deck in the evening and watching all the animals come out.
We have deer, geese, birds of all kinds, ground animals, an occasional bobcat and bear.
We're approaching the time in life where travel may not be possible much longer. Our stay over Christmas was magical and a memory that will last. The ground sparkled with ice crystals in the early morning sun, and on Christmas morning the tall tree in front of the deck shone in the sun, with bright red berries decorating the branches. Our very own Christmas tree and the beginning of a peaceful and joyful Christmas with family. The bed was superb, the rustic surroundings gave a cozy feel, and we would love to stay here longer than just a few days.
Very functional, clean, and comfortable plus beautiful surroundings on the lake.Even in winter!
We enjoyed the privacy very much and being away from the hustle and bustle of Silicon Valley. Thank you very much. There was no internet service or phone signal in the cabin, so it forced us to appreciate life together without it!
We booked this sweet cabin last minute and had a remarkable time! The cabin had everything we needed including spectacular views, a warm and cozy space on a rainy weekend, electric blankets (ahhhh), geese honking in the morning, a beautiful sunset over the fire pit, and a running river for our dogs (the upside of the low lake... a running river). The bathroom was clean with a great shower head and plenty of shampoo, soap, etc. The kitchen was stocked with anything we needed (we brought food and spices) and there is a campsite style barbecue near the front deck, placed conveniently near the kitchen. If TV and games are your thing, it has that, too! Kathryn was a gracious host and checked in to make sure we would be OK with the rain. Thank you for a wonderful stay! We highly recommend this rental if you enjoy getting away to a peaceful retreat. No cell service, although Nevada City is nearby. We were looking forward to feeling off the grid without having to burn down time off with a long drive. Perfect.
We rented a little cabin in the woods, which was just what we ordered. But the heater wasn't working that first night so we called the owners and were rewarded with a great up-grade at the lodge. This made our trip even more wonderful. I want to thank our hosts for responding so quickly and making our vacation even better. Thank you.
