Beachfront on Lake Erie * Sunset Cottage

Bedrooms 1
Space 500 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 - 7 nights

About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-6)

Come visit us at Steelhead Run offering panoramic views of the sunsets on Lake Erie. You will find this one bedroom cottage to be quite comfortable offering all the utility of a smaller home. We have another cottage next door, see VRBO #427161. When you arrive you will find yourself nestled between Lake Erie and Chautauqua Creek on 7 forested acres. Both features can be accessed in less than a 200 foot walk from the cottage. On the beach you can spend time hunting for beach glass and driftwood, or take the half-mile walk along the beach to Barcelona Harbor area to enjoy a bit to eat, a cocktail, or even purchase a smoked fish at the fish market. Barcelona Harbor also offers a marina and a public launching facility to access Lake Erie. Do you want to go fishing? Take a charter out of the harbor, or try and hit the world renowned Steelhead fishery found in Chautauqua Creek. Don’t worry if Lake Erie is a little too rough on that day for boating. Make a trip to any one of the four inland lakes a short drive from the cottage. Chautauqua Lake is the largest and closest (5mi.) inland lake to the cottage. Chautauqua Lake offers many attractions available by boat that includes, The Chautauqua Institution, Midway Amusement Park, Long Point State Park, shopping, and numerous restaurant/bar establishments. There is truly something for everyone here.

Consider a wine tour if you’re looking to venture away from the lake for a bit. Lake Erie Wine Country, located in the largest grape-growing region east of the Rockies, extends roughly 45 miles from Silver Creek, New York to North East, Pennsylvania. At the end of 2011, it has become home to over 24 commercial and estate wineries. Other attractions within arms reach include Niagara Falls, restaurants, ski resorts, snowmobile trails, nature trails, golf courses, inland lakes, shopping, and a casino, most in less than a 30 mile radius. Additionally, one can find cultural stimulation at Chautauqua Institution. Here you can enjoy their symphony, concerts, speaking venues and theater performances.

As a courtesy to the neighboring cottage, please respect the maximum number of guests in our cottages. We do understand that our guests want to share the experience of Steelhead Run with friends and family. Visitors are certainly welcome, but please limit their numbers to insure that there is minimal disturbance to the neighbors.

If you are looking for an event location, or anticipate large group size please consider reserving both cottages. We have successfully accommodated events such as small family reunions, church retreats, and even professional photo shoots.

We are located ½ mile from the New York State Thruway (I-90), Exit 60. From here, you will find that it’s a quick ride to and from the Buffalo or Erie International Airports.

5 stars! A Beautiful Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage sits on a little piece of paradise. You will have a front row seat to nature's beauty. Catch a colorful sunset by the bonfire and in the morning enjoy your coffe on the porch while sitting in a rocker. There are many things to do such as biking, kayaking, dining out, visiting The Grape Discovery Center (interesting exhibits, tastings and gift shop), antique shopping, wine tasting (and a brewery), and just enjoying a day on the beach. Dave is very accommodating and when we had a question, he responded right away. It is evident he cares about his property and his guests' experience. We would definitely return! Thanks for a great vacation!!

Owner's Response: Hi Cheryl, Thank you for sharing your experience here with us and capturing what we offer at Steelhead Run. There is certainly something for everyone here and in the Western NY area. In fact, I am always impressed that some of our guests are able to uncover places or activities that I had not been aware existed. Thanks again and come back soon, Dave

Perfect lake front getaway!

  • 5 of 5

My daughter and I stayed at the cottage in January. It exceeded any and every expectation I could have possibly had! The location, access to the lake, the condition of the cabin, the overall feel of the place..this place is a dream and the pride of ownership is very apparent. We hope to return next year!

Magical in any season!

This is my third stay in Sunset Cottage and it will definitely not be my last! It is a peaceful, well-equipped cottage in a spectacular location. The only thing that would make it better was if it was my forever home! :-)

Everything we dreamed of and more!

  • 5 of 5

The Sunset Cottage and neighboring Driftwood Cottage are both amazing properties. We were blessed to find these Steelhead Run cottages while chasing snow in New England and the Great Lakes area over the Christmas and New Year holiday.

The Sunset Cottage is perfect for a couple. The furnishings are simple and clean and the mattresses are extremely comfortable. The kitchen is well stocked, and the bathroom has a great shower and good quality towels. With blizzard-force winds howling around us, the cottage was toasty warm. The cable and internet service were great. We didn't stay in Driftwood, but the owner let us check it out for future visits. It was a larger cottage with two bedrooms and an open floor plan kitchen/living room. It would be great for a family with children or two couples.

The BEST part of this property is that it literally sits on the shores of Lake Erie. There is a small yard between the cottage and the lake that includes two fire pits with adirondack chairs, grills, and swings. While we were there for winter, I imagine this makes for a wonderful summer evening! From our cottage, we could see the waves crashing over the snow-covered beach the first day. By the end of the week, there was a mountain of solid ice on the shoreline, icebergs floating in the lake, and about 18" of snow all around.

I simply cannot say enough about the owner, David Spann. It was like coming home to a great neighbor. He came over one night to change out a beeping smoke alarm battery, kept our drive plowed, gave us great recommendations for a nearby winery (Johnson Estates), pointed us to the nearby grocery, and let us stay over to watch the SEC championship game! I think we kept him amused with our love snow and excitement over the storm!

These are pet-friendly cabins and our little yorkie was right at home. She never smelled another dog anywhere in the cabin (other than a quick visit from David's beautiful lab) so she felt quite safe, although she did keep a close eye on the fish mounted in the living room. The property is great for dogs because it sits off the main road and is separated by a creek.

This was one of the best vacations I have ever had in one of the most magical and beautiful places. Thank you for such wonderful memories David!

Owner's Response: Hi Rebecca, I certainly enjoyed you guys while visiting here with us, and appreciate this thoughtful review. There is no doubt that most folks don’t really care to be snowed in while here! However, it was the thing you guys were looking forward to experience. Without a doubt the stars aligned for you on this visit. Gale force winds and 2” of snow per hour was on Mother Nature’s menu! Yet, you were able to find peace and comfort while inside the cottage in between venturing out to experience the fury. Thank you for sharing your experience with us and others, Dave

Owner's Response: Hi Mark, Thank you for the nice comments. Yes, mother nature was certainly grumpy during your visit. In fact, the creek just before you arrived was as high as I have ever seen it get in my lifetime here. Its nice to know that you guys found some things to do and had a enjoyable visit regardless. Hope to see you next fall, Dave

Great little gem!

  • 4 of 5

We (brother/sister) went to enjoy some sibling time and do some fishing on the creek. Perfect for our needs. Beautiful views of the lake and the sunsets. Many fisherman on the creek and opening of creek to the lake which is about 300 yards away. Very convenient. Would definitely go back!

About David Spann

This property has been in our family since the late 60’s. My wife and I built a home on here in 1998. This is where we continue to raise our children, Anthony and Morgan.

David Spann purchased this cottage in 2011

Why David Spann chose Westfield

We chose to build here to provide visitors with actual beachfront access. Much of the Lake Erie shoreline is elevated high on bluffs making it quite inaccessible. While staying here, you will find access to the lake very easy and the beach to be quite extensive.

What makes this cottage unique

Whether you’re an experienced steelheader or beginner we can accommodate you. We have teamed up with Chrome Run Guide Service. Any anglers new to the fishery can take advantage of learning expert techniques necessary for landing steelhead. Call now for special rates on fishing packages. Remember, Chautauqua Creek is in the middle of 'Steelhead Alley' where anglers can head in either direction to fish other streams. Chautauqua Creek has one of the largest catch rates of Steelhead in 'Steelhead Alley'. It has been calculated that fishing success equals 2.5 fish/hr. of fishing effort.
