At home in the heart of Arcata with plenty of privacy and accessibility to everything this great town has to offer. This bright and cozy space (1000+ square feet) is fully equipped with everything you need to enjoy your stay in Humboldt. Close proximity to downtown and HSU (5-10min walks) makes getting around effortless. Large rooftop patio with umbrella and furniture.

The space
Spanish style, bright, and cozy with amazing views of the town and sunsets! High vaulted ceilings with plenty of living space to relax. Walking distance to the Arcata plaza with local shops, bars, restaurants, yoga studios, breweries, Los Bagels, local ice cream shops, Wildberries’s Market, Humboldt state university, and Redwood Park. Close to the 101 freeway.
Guest access
Guests will have access to a lockbox for entry, making your check in and check out very effortless. In the back of the restaurant there’s a door to the apartment’s entry. There is a flight of stairs to the apartment, there’s is no elevator available. Guests have access to everything inside this space. We are available when needed but guests will have the space to themselves. Check in is 3pm -10pm and Check out is 11am although we are flexible if given notice. Any checkin after 10pm is subject to guests full responsibility. Please contact Airbnb for questions after hours (10pm-8am).

Parking: park anywhere in the restaurants parking lot, plenty of spaces!
Other things to note
There’s a delicious Mexican restaurant downstairs with a full bar and happy hour every weekday! They’re open from 11am to 9pm. Everything is made from scratch including homemade tortillas! A delicious treat you have to try! Plenty of vegetarian options and a large menu with very traditional items to offer.

Wonderful location and host

We attended a week-long workshop on campus. This was the perfect location since it was a lovely short walk back and forth 3 times a day. Wildberries Market is right across the street which is is a great place to pick up hot meals. The place is very spacious, bright, and cheery. There were new sheets and towels. The kitchen is large and stocked with everything you need. Ruby is a sweetheart and responded immediately when we messaged her.

Bright and spacious apartment close to the Plaza

We enjoyed our stay at Carmela's Penthouse. Her place had lots of natural light and was spotless. The steps up were not steep and easy to climb. While we did not cook, the kitchen would be easy to cook in and included everything needed for simple cooking. She included a wide selection of teas and a package of nice cookies, too, a very nice touch! My only recommendation is to list all of the many amenities on vrbo online and not just on the app as many of us older folks use our laptops not our phones to search for places to stay.

Honeymoon!

We went to Arcata as a honeymoon. It is a college town that I attended a decade ago, and so I know the area very well, where all the cool places are, etc. Carmela's penthouse was a charming and uplifting space. The large kitchen and high vaulted ceilings contributed to a feeling that it was just very easy to be there. Walking across the street to Wildberries meant that I could get a morning latte and croissants from just several yards away. One thing I was worried about was if cooking smells would sneak in from the restaurant beneath us. They did not! There is no smell permeability between Carmela's Penthouse and Carmela's Mexican Restaurant (another delicious convenience). The bed was so comfortable we had significant difficulty waking up in the morning! That is how it should be. One serious perk was that the host was very responsive and respectful over the App as well. Very easy to communicate with. We look forward to returning! -Eric and Rae

Not professionally cleaned

There were linens in the drier, communal soap that was used, not professionally cleaned (which they admit...they say they save costs by having those who stay there clean up after themselves), no air conditioning (or heating I imaging), really slippery bathtub that my child slipped in despite the mat that has likely never been cleaned that they supply. It smelled weird in there (like maybe urine? or mold?). The owners were VERY nice! However, it was not worth over 400 for two night. I did buy some fans which helped me sleep due to the heat. The last thing that was hard was that the only laundry detergent they had was HIGHLY fragranced and the linens smelled so strongly I could not sleep ( I an sensitive to perfume) so I has to buy fragrance free detergent to wash a blanket so I could sleep. I am used to having no fragrance on my linens, individual soap for sanitary reasons, and having a room professionally cleaned and not having items in the dishwasher and the drier when I get there. This was no cheaper than any other place. And you should know it is above a restaurant. So it can be loud (that did not bother me, but it might bother others).
