About the property

House, 8 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 6 Baths, (Sleeps 16)

Inauguration $30,000+ fees up to 7 nights.

This Extraordinary Historic Detached Mansion is located in Dupont/Logan Circle areas in the Middle of the City. Approximately 5000+ SF, The former Rectory of St. Augustine's Church and the original site of a Civil War Hospital is one of the few remaining large downtown estates that have not been converted to condominiums! It is located directly across the street from the World-renowned Masonic Temple with spectacular views of the rear gardens and its magnificent Pillars lit at night. A wonderful tour is offered weekdays!! The Old Mansard Bishops house and Convent buildings next door still retain the architecture of the period, and are quite beautiful. It is a very short distance to the White House, just one block to 16th Street the 'Avenue of the Presidents', and a stroll to the downtown Business District and Major Monuments. And for those looking for DC'S newest and hottest restaurants and clubs, the Rectory is just a couple of blocks away to the must-go and trendy 14th Street corridor.

Being a detached structure this home offers sun filled rooms and quiet visits with new high end thermo-pane windows through-out. This home has been decorated with attention to the buildings beginnings, a crosscut travertine floor has been laid and the original plaster wainscoting has been hand painted by a local artist to match all the way to the third floor. The first floor is spacious and covered in original woodwork of chestnut wainscoting and old world pine. Please notice in our sites photo's of the original great doors to the dining room and den. The original closets throughout the home were constructed of cedar wood to preserve the woolen frocks of the monks and dignitaries. The original stained glass in the hallways leading up through the home still retain some of the original stained glass with the the letter 'A' for the church she was built for, St. Augustin! The original church is still standing just up the street, and worth a tour of her magnificent stained glass and architecture!

The kitchen has a sun filled breakfast area, again with lots of windows. Also Commercial grade appliances, lots of cooking utensils and serving platters, and the cupboards are full of glassware, dishes, and utensils.

The family room is in the rear of the home with double French doors to the rear trumpet vine covered patio for grilling. This room boasts wooden cross-beamed ceilings, yet more wood wainscoting and moldings, and a working fireplace. Please feel free to use the large flat screen TV while lounging on the comfortable leather sofa's…very comfy room!!

Also on the main floor is a private den that doubles as an extra bedroom on the main floor. There is also a full bathroom with shower on the main floor. This is ideal if you have a guest that has troubles with stairs.

The main living room is a bit more formal with rich curtains at the bay window, comfortable yet elegant seating and a wonderful area to gather for cocktails! Just across the hall find the den with a pull out leather sofa and antique writing desk. The dining room may be extended into this room by opening the massive wooden by-fold doors. An additional table is available. Lest we forget, there is a full bath/powder room on this floor and plenty of coat closet space!

Upstairs, on the second floor you will find a flower balcony looking to the Mason's temple. We have often seen the presidential entourage from this spot and wave accordingly? The enormous master bedroom is en suite with a separate shower and large soaking tub. The two additional bedrooms share a private hall with a full bath and two large cedar closets.

Follow the wainscoting to the third floor and find five more bedrooms. Each with its own solid chestnut and pine door. Two of the rooms share a hall and would be perfect as a suite or two bedroom private area. The third bedroom is en-suite as well as the fourth. The fifth bedroom is quite spacious and has access to the fourth bath through a separate door. Lots of light in all of these rooms and some have spectacular views of the city including the Washington monument!

The private roof-deck is spectacular. Views 360. The original Rectory Cross is still standing and the perfect spot for watching the sunset behind the Masonic Temple. Look to your left through the pergola, and see a beautiful and perfect shot of the Washington monument!!! Lots of roof top planters with mature trees and flowers, depending on time of year…The fourth level is by appointment only, and must be approved for use by the owner. No children allowed on roof deck. Please be advised that this home is child friendly but not child proof. We are also in a quiet neighborhood setting and cannot allow any parties or loud music. None outside. Although we love pets, they are not allowed on the property. The completely separate basement unit is not included in rental and these tenants have access to rear yard for trash and emergencies only.

About Cliff Palermo

I love hosting people in my homes in DC. My brothers and I have been providing vacationers comfortable accommodations since 2011. I wanted to create a special business handling exceptional and interesting properties. It is my goal to provide properties that create a magical and whimsical setting while you are in Washington, yet provide the services people need that have busy lives that follow them when they travel ...

Why Cliff Palermo chose District of Columbia (Washington DC)

I bought this home because I wanted a large, unique and special place where my friends and family could gather. It had to be in the middle of it all yet, peaceful, quiet and elegant. Washington is an amazing city and this property is located in the most vibrant part of the city in my opinion. Shops, restaurants, Whole Foods, the theater, Steps Away....

What makes this estate unique

There are many unique things about this property. The property was a former Church Rectory. It was built for Communal living and the floors and walls are concrete and masonry. As a result it is very quiet floor to floor. The home has beautiful high celings and woodwork. It is directly across the street from the Masonic Temple and a lush Community Garden ..... Although the house is large, it is beautifully scaled and comfortable. There is an amazing park just up the hill with an incredible view of the city....

Quiet and Private the home has hosted countless Washington luminaries.

It has one of the most incredible roof decks with an amazing view of the Masonic Temple one of the cities most interesting Archiectual masterpieces. This roof deck is available for your enjoyment until 9pm.

Historic, charming and a great property.

We had family in for a wedding and the property was all that the VRBO site says it is. A great classy older building , solidly built with execellent bedrooms, meeting rooms. The kitchen is fantastic as it is all commercial grade and well stocked with utinsils and serve ware. It was perfect for our needs. If I was visiting Washington DC with family or a group, I would use it again.

While the VRBO site says parking space for one car, I do not recommend that guests use the space. We had a minivan and while we got it in the parking space, we had less than an inch on each side getting thru the gate and less than six inches front to back. Street parking is recommended if you think you need a car ( you will need a parking permit at $50 ) or use Uber, Taxi or Metro to get around

Great Space for Board Retreat

  • 4 of 5

Our non-profit board used this rental for our retreat to do strategic planning and it was a wonderful experience. There was a great dining room that we used for our meetings comfortably, and two rooms with couches for more informal gatherings and discussions. Everyone was happy with their rooms and bathrooms, and with so many available, we each got our own space. Only issue was not be able to get the dishwasher running, and the refrigerator/freezer kept running hot. However, when called, we were sent help quickly, so it all worked out. Rooftop terrace was a beautiful spot for lunch and dinner! It is a great location as well, most of us took a run or walk to the White House and back to start our mornings (less than 2 mi roundtrip). The stairs were a bit tough for a couple of our older members but the younger crowd took the top floor and thought it was great. The stone house had one great benefit - VERY quiet! You couldn't ever tell if others were awake in morning it was so quiet! Thank you for a very productive retreat and enjoyable experience!

Fun place and great location!

  • 4 of 5

Perfect place to stay for a large group of friends. Easy access by metro or bus to all DC sightseeing. The immediate neighborhood is fabulous with shops, restaurants and markets.

The bedrooms are a little smaller than they appear but plenty spacious for 2 people. Everything in the kitchen works well. The place is surface clean and has plenty of sheets and towels.

Perfect For Large Groups

  • 5 of 5

Faced with booking 5 hotel rooms in the city for a business trip with several colleagues and our families (they always want to go to the fun places, but never come with us to Afghanistan for some reason), I was running out of options. Many of the hotels were not able to accommodate the large party on the same floor, let alone next to each other. As a last resort, I found this amazing house right in one of the best locations of DC. We saved thousands of dollars on lodging, not including the substantial savings on being able to cook all of our meals together in the magnificent chef's kitchen. The view from the balcony was incredible and made for a great after-hours drink with the wives. The house is conveniently located near grocery stores, coffee shops, a nearby CrossFit box, and a dry cleaner. While the house is a fairly long walk (for little kids, mind you) to the big name restaurants, metro stations, and the Mall, the trade off is totally worth it. Besides, that's what Uber is for. I can't wait until our next trip - I won't even bother looking at the overpriced hotels near Capitol Hill or the Mall.

Huge Group House In Best Location In DC

  • 5 of 5

We had a very large group gather in DC over Presidents' Day weekend for a reunion. We booked this house because it was the only house in the city limits big enough to accommodate our group size. We couldn't have been happier with the house; I didn't know it was possible to find a house that large in one of the best neighborhoods in DC, but it was amazing. Plenty of bedrooms so that everyone had their own personal space, beds were super comfy, and walls/doors were thick enough so that small kids could sleep while their parents hung out downstairs. Kitchen was well stocked, and they supplied all the essentials (plenty of TP, paper towels, dish soap, laundry detergent, shampoo/conditioner/hand soap in every bathroom, all the stuff you need but rarely think of when you make a grocery store run for a weekend like this). Location couldn't have been better - a block from the 14th Street corridor with restaurants/bars/shopping, another block to U Street metro, and just a few blocks north of Dupont. There were some minor issues with the place (the front doorknob kept falling off, garbage disposal and coffee maker didn't work, etc.), but Cliff and Paul were very responsive and we never felt inconvenienced at all. All in all, we had a really great time and would definitely stay here again if we end up back in DC.

Great group rental!

  • 4 of 5

After viewing the profile of the property, our group wanted to book the mansion for our annual retreat. Our group ranged in age from 35 to 71 and truly enjoyed being able to stay under one roof. Despite some minor mishaps at the property, we were pleased. Our trip occurred during a rainy time and had some leaks on the top floor, but the owner was very responsive and came over to handle the situation. We were able to walk to the Safeway and Whole Foods for meal items. We also took advantage of the bus and train for outings to the Smithsonian and Zoo. The dining room was able to accommodate the caterer who came in to do a meal function for the group. Be mindful of all of the stairs. We were able to accommodate our oldest group member with the sleeper sofa of the first floor.
