Frisco's maritime history
The tiny village of Hatteras, at the far end of the island, is home to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum. At this small, family-friendly attraction, you can learn about local history and maritime crafts. It also runs seasonal events through the year. The region is home to a number of historic lighthouses which are fun to explore. In summer, climb Bodie Island Light Station on the northern end of Cape Hatteras National Seashore for beautiful views over the water. The landmark Ocracoke Lighthouse dates back to 1823, and the nearby Ocracoke Preservation Society Museum traces the island's history.
Atlantic bliss in Frisco
From your Frisco vacation rental, you can follow the Atlantic seashore around to Cape Hatteras Light. This distinctive lighthouse dates back to the 1870s and offers climbs with scenic views over the ocean, Pamlico Sound and Buxton Woods. Hiking and nature trails cut through these woods of red cedar, oak and pine interspersed with marshy wetlands and sedges – making for a great birdwatching habitat. Reptiles, amphibians, otters and white-tail deer have also been spotted. Around 45 minutes north up the Outer Banks, Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge is another popular birding and hiking spot.
