About Khristine Burton

David and Carla Shaffer started building their two story Log Home in the spring of 1977. They have raised their 11 children and many foster children in this home. David taught Mathematics and Physics at the Junior High, High School and Community College levels for 40 years and is now retired. Carla is a stay at home mother and housewife, She loves providing her children the love and joy of parenthood teaching her children the responsibilities of an American citizen. Together they enjoy their Montana life style that brought them to this beautiful area in the summer of 1971.

Khristine Burton purchased this house in 1971

Why Khristine Burton chose Glacier Country

In 1971 we purchased the land from the family of the original homesteaders of the area where our home is built. At the time there were very few people living on this the "wrong side of town" on a gravel road. We chose to live in the rural part of Columbia Falls to give our children the experience of living on a farm and doing chores. Montana gave our family the opportunity for hunting , fishing, camping and enjoying the 4 distinct seasons of year.

What makes this house unique

Our Log Home has a special spirit in it that comes from living good principles, loving each other and reaching out to members of our community.

Cozy property

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Kristine, David and Elizabeth for renting us Montana Homestead. We had a truly great time. The house was the perfect size with room for everyone to sleep comfortably. The house was well stocked with everything we needed- clean linens, well equipped kitchen, toys for our 10 year old and 2 year old. Huge yard space, loved the fire pit and the grill!

Kristine was very responsive- she was in constant touch with us- even walked over at 11pm to help us with something. Her daughter Elizabeth and our son played together for a bit- oh yes and the fireworks that Kristine got for the kids were a hit.

We are definitely returning to Montana Homestead!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your kind words. Elizabeth was excited for the invitation to play with your kids and to enjoy in a little bit of your fun with the holiday week. It was my pleasure to assist you in the needs you had. I am glad you asked for it. We at Montana Homestead are in the background available to assist if needed and we are able. I'm happy to hear that your family trip with both sets of grandparents and your kids was a huge success. (oops Uncle too). We at Montana Homestead feel our greatest joy seeing families coming together on the property. Thank you. We look forward to seeing you when you return.

This was a great place for our family get together

  • 5 of 5

Our group of ten spent five days at this home and can't say enough good things about it. The owners were easy to work with and provided toys, a high chair, and a PAC and play for our preschoolers. The sledding hill provided hours of fun for the little ones as well as the adult kids. Other reviewers mentioned that the twin beds in the "kids room" were too small for adults but my sister and her husband (both 5'7") slept comfortably there. There were plenty of towels, appliances, and dishes for our group. We hope to return next Christmas!

Excellent experience despite the rain!

  • 5 of 5

We came together from the individual places where our adult children have settled, for the first family vacation since they left home. We had hoped to spend our time exploring Glacier National Park. But, the weather did not cooperate and we spent half of the time at this home. We had children from15 months to 12 years of age. Most were under 5. Quite a little Wolf Pack. But, the house was completely stocked with everything that we needed! The refridgerator is huge and we all want one now! There are toys and games for every age group. They even supplied the movie we had talked about from the kids childhood! Our kids grew up around a fire pit, and it was just awesome to share fires with the littles! Kristine and Dave were so wonderful to work with and we would not hesitate to book from them again! This house is just perfect for a family reunion! Thanks so much for sharing your home with us and providing such a warm and loving environment for us to be a family again!

Well maintained "Home Away from Home"!

  • 4 of 5

The Montana Homestead is truly a well-stocked, well-maintained "homestead". From the kitchen to the bathrooms to the bedrooms to the outdoor facilities and features, we have never enjoyed such a well-stocked and maintained rental vacation home. The house and grounds are immaculate, roomy and very comfortable. Be sure to leave some time to enjoy the Homestead grounds - - lots of outdoor games and, of course, s'mores heated over the outdoor fire-pit (wood stacked right there). Be cognizant that the smaller bedroom with two "trundle" beds is really for children - - larger adults may not find beds comfortable. This is the way to enjoy Montana!

Awkward House with Abysmal Customer Servicd

  • 2 of 5

This should really be a one star but the owners (the parents) were really sweet people.

First, communication with Khristine (the daughter) was abysmal. I would email her and not hear back for weeks. Then every time I would talk to her it was as if she had never emailed me before and we would have to repeat the details I had already emailed her multiple times.

Secondly, the house has an incredibly awkward set up. None of the three restrooms have privacy. One is in a room with saloon doors so you can see the person. The main floor has a closet shutter door so you can see in that one too. The upstairs is just a toilet. It was so uncomfortable!!!

Third, we had no privacy as the owners were constantly on the property. If we had wanted to stay with strangers we would have done that.

Fourth, the house was dirty when we got there with sand on the floors and linens that hasn't been washed.

Fifth, we had to pay an exorbitant cleaning fee. It seemed really high but we paid and moved on. However, when we checked out we still cleaned the entire house just because that's the type of family that we are. When I got back home, Khristine charged me another triple digit amount to replace every washcloth and towel that we used. When I emailed her for photos of the damage, she of course did not reply.

I would not recommend this property to anyone.

Owner's Response: We are so sorry to hear your stay at Montana Homestead was not up to your standards. We strive very hard to make our guest's stay at Montana Homestead a positive experience to enjoy the beauties of Montana while staying in a older Montana home. Montana Homestead was the home our family was raised in by the owners. It brings our family great joy to share our home with other families to enjoy the area. The description of our home and amenities are found on our listing of Montana Homestead on VRBO. Pictures, our rates and fees are also on our listing. Every guest is given the opportunity to review their rental agreement prior to making their reservation. A $350 deposit is due at the time of the reservation which serves as the reservation and security deposit for any damage or loss. The full deposit is returned to our guest within 5 business days after check out. If any loss or damage occurred during their stay it will be taken out of the deposit and noted with the refund. Every guest is given the opportunity to have a walk through the house to make sure it is ready for their group prior to signing their rental agreement. Any additional questions or concerns can be addressed at the time of check in. We strive to communicate with each and every one of our guests. During the summer months we are very busy. This summer alone we had a total of 11 different group come through Montana Homestead. Sometimes it takes awhile for us to respond but we do. Guests of Montana Homestead are given their privacy during their stay. The owners will only come on the rental property to remove trash on a daily basis, since there are bears in the area, and upon the request of the guest. We are taking your comments in regards to the bathroom doors into consideration. The home was built in 1977 when bathroom fans were not used in the area during that time. The open slits in the doors provide the necessary ventilation needed in the bathrooms. We are looking into different options to address this issue without remodeling the homestead.

Pure Montana Living

  • 5 of 5

Montana Homestead is a darling country house retreat located near Glacier National Park. Our group of 3 adults and 3 kids (11, 13, 16) totally enjoyed our stay. Everything was as advertised - when we drove up several of us saw the house and yelled - "that's it!" Everything was very clean. Of course we went to Glacier a few days and saw all kinds of wildlife up close - fabulous! A smaller group went to Whitefish Mountain Resort and had fun on the Alpine Slide. Between these adventures, we had a great time at the house. River rafting with Montana Raft Company was also great. In the house, each corner, nook, and cranny is totally decorated so nicely that you really feel like you're at place to be free of your normal stresses and can just relax. The huge yard got a good workout from Frisbee, Frisbee golf, baseball and just running around. Grandma introduced the kids to horseshoes as well! The fire pit was a huge draw, both in trying to get a good fire started, and then sitting around talking and having S'mores. We were told - if you can't find something, open a drawer or cabinet and you'll find it -- which was true! We also enjoyed the owner's hospitality a few times, and really thought the gift of the 'Montana' shaped cutting board and huckleberry jam was a nice touch. Also noteworthy was the fact that the grocery store was just up the street, a good thing for a family that cooks rather than eats out... We would go back here in a heartbeat - it was just a great experience.
