About Cyndi and Mark Burgunder

We built the cabin.

Cyndi and Mark Burgunder purchased this cabin in 2010

Why Cyndi and Mark Burgunder chose Alta Sierra

We took an alternate route home from dropping our son off at Jameson Ranch Camp in Glennville, CA. Looking at the map, we wanted to explore this lake, Lake Isabella. We had never heard of it. Imagine our surprise as we came over Greenhorn Summit on our way down to the lake when we saw For Sale signs. How could private property be available in the heart of the Sierra National Forest? After much research and looking nationwide for a vacation home, we decided that this was the place. Beautiful and relaxing yet unending opportunities for recreation and leisure activities. Whitewater Rafting, Lake Isabella boating, fishing, jetskiing, windsurfing as well as Off road trails, hiking, ATV exploring, snow mobiling, cross country skiing, downhill skiing, sledding, hiking, and even a public golf course about 9 miles in Kernville.

What makes this cabin unique

Cabin is better than photos

  • 4 of 5

The Alta Z Annex was a very nice cabin with a wonderful open layout and actually better than the photos showed. It was just the 2 of us with our small dog and used only the downstairs; however could easily have accommodated more guests with all the beds and room upstairs. The only reason we didnt give it 5 stars is the deck area was extremely dirty and no comfortable seating outside. Old broken patio furniture and didnt use jacuzzi as appeared there had been a big wind storm prior to our arrival. The deck, stairs and jacuzzi were a mess - umbrella on the ground and jacuzzi cover half off and pine needles everywhere. Had we stayed longer than 2 days (actually less), we would have cleaned up with no problem. But we were off property hiking during the one day and inside watching the world series evenings so not much missed with the outside space. We will stay again in the future and communication with Cyndi was first class. Thank you!!

Owner's Response: Evelyn: Thank you for the review. I think we had some weather before your arrival. I am sorry there was so many pine needles and leaves on the deck. Oak trees are now losing their leaves so that contributed to the issue as well. Our housekeeper is sweeping the deck and steps after each guest so we must have had some wind prior to your arrival. The patio furniture is being replaced on our next visit. The deck environment is harsh for the furniture. Sun in the afternoons and harsh winters. We replace or repair about every other year. Sorry it was in poor condition. The metal glider is in good shape though. That thing is the mack truck of patio furniture. Thanks for all your communication as well. Nice to know our guests enjoyed their time at our cabin.

Cost and Value Didn't Match

  • 3 of 5

This getaway was our wedding anniversary celebration, which I made clear when reserving. One of the main reasons for selecting this property was the romantic notion of soaking in the Jacuzzi under the stars on each of our four nights there. However, THE NIGHT BEFORE check-in, the property owner called to tell me that the Jacuzzi wasn't working. Not only was it not working, but when we first went out on the deck, the tub was making some serious noise. My husband lifted the cover, got soaked from the water shooting out, and noticed the water level was extremely low. He added water so the motor wouldn't burn out. The repair guy showed up two days later, but the water never reached a comfortable soaking temperature (maximum temperature, when it was time to check out, had finally reached 97 degrees). Very disappointing.

That being said, the house was beautiful and comfortable, the kitchen was well-equipped, and we enjoyed shooting pool upstairs. The large windows are definitely a plus. Unfortunately, the shade on the biggest window was down and the mechanism to roll it up was broken.

Aside from the Jacuzzi being out of service, the gas grill having no fuel, the window shade being down and basic amenities missing (somehow I thought there would be stuff like travel-size shampoo or a box of tissues here & there), the house was in a gorgeous, tranquil setting and we had a pleasant stay. It just seemed like we should've seen some kind of discount, especially since we kept their Jacuzzi motor from burning out. But in the seven-page rental agreement (which we had to sign after we had paid all the rental and other fees but before we could check in) it says they don't have to issue any discounts for malfunctioning equipment, so you just have to keep that in mind when you book the place.

Owner's Response: I am struggling to respond without defensiveness but this will be challenging. These guests were helpful and kind and never expressed frustration or disappointment. I would have gladly given them a discount for all their help and teamwork wrt the jacuzzi. The cabin is in a remote area where servicing a jacuzzi is difficult to schedule. We really pulled some strings to get our repairman to change his schedule and drive up from Tehachapi. The jacuzzi was fixed. Unfortunately, the guests started pushing buttons and somehow changed the setting back to “summer” which limits how high the temperature goes. We stayed after Amy and figured this out. We really tried to make their stay and the jacuzzi work. Rental agreement is attached to every payment request. Many guests miss it and I send a second copy when I realize it has not been returned to us. That’s what happened here. The blind works. It’s not broken. The cabin is self catering. No shampoo is provided. Soap is provided at all sinks and shower gel is in the shower. Paper towels, toilet paper, towels, sheets, are all provided. I try to always have a box of tissues near the sofa. There is a charcoal grill, a propane grill and an indoor fireplace but fuel for all of these amenities is the guest responsibility. Last, everyone has their own personal precept of value. The home is a 1500 sq ft space with a nicely equipped kitchen, pool table, jacuzzi, and beautiful deck. Please make comparisons to the other cabins in the area and their pricing, decor and amenities. You will not find better.

Wonderful getaway!

  • 4 of 5

It is a beautiful location and nice accommodation. Wonderful getaway. I would have given it five stars, but it is the only VRBO I've stayed in without ANY condiments. Be prepared to bring EVERYTHING (even salt and pepper) with you.

Owner's Response: Lenore So sorry you didn't find the salt and pepper. The cabin is self catering so most items need to be brought. That said, I try very hard to keep salt and pepper stocked. We have two sets of shakers over on the hutch next to the dining room table. I also leave salt and pepper in the top drawer next to the oven. Sometimes guests before you may use it all up and it sounds like that was the case here. I do apologize. I do want to also mention there is a small sugar bowl on top of the microwave as well as a spice rack hanging next to the coffee pot. There are 12 different herbs and spices there but I can make no guarantee they they will always be full. Thank you for the feedback and I'll make sure we check the salt and pepper levels after each guest checks out. Hope you will consider staying with us again. Best regards, Cyndi
