About Gregg McArthur

My name is Gregg McArthur and I am the President of McArthur Towel and Sports out of Baraboo Wisconsin,

The property on English Lake has been in our family since 1972 and after debate we decided to demolish the old family cabin and build our new custom log home. We enjoy sharing the property with responsible indviduals and families that enjoy a backwoods retreat.

We personally enjoy Snowmobiling , ATV rides, hunting, fishing and regular trips out to the many northwoods establishments in the area. Great people and great fun.

We look forward to hearing from you and don't forget to sign the guest book before you leave.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Gregg, We JUST arrived home to Fl. from your cabin. We left a few days early to tend to some matters at home before returning to work. Thank you so much for everything. It was a wonderful home away from home. All went well and we found ourselves on some enjoyable golf courses (really liked Apostle Highlands in Bayfield) and found some great restaurants. We did not use the upstairs at all. We confined our dogs to the screened porch or if in family room they were contained in their playpen. They loved the yard too. We would like to be up there next year as well so we will keep looking at our schedules together. We cleaned everything up and restored it to the way we entered. Rich Becker was very kind to us. Randy and Rich shared some Viet Nam history as they had been in some common areas. Randy was a helicopter gunship pilot. Rich provided us with home made maple syrup and a meal of crappie fillets. You have everything so easy to make it a turn key experience. Most times we ate out after we finished golfing. We went to a couple of Casinos and certainly did not make any $. Looking forward to keeping in contact for next year. We did not wait for security check as it is fine to just send it in the mail. I am sure Rich got the deck sealed as we told him we were departing a little early. Many, many thanks for sharing you beautiful cabin with us. Warm Regards, Sandy

Everything you could wish for

  • 5 of 5

The English Lake Escape is as wonderful as everyone says. We loved listening to the Loons and Frogs during our early morning fishing. The lake is beautiful and the cabin has everything you need (Thank you, Greg). We recommend getting the Pontoon while you are there too (Thank you, Tim). We hope to return again.

Best 5 days family vacation ever!!!

  • 5 of 5

Beautifull cabin and lawn, well maintained and wonderful view of the lake with it's uninterupted view of the shoreline and low slung mountain across the water from the cabin. Lots of fish for the kids and grownups to enjoy the sport of fishing! Loons on the lake with a little one. Deer drinking at the shoreline. A very peaceful and wonderful lake for kayaking. Take your iphone or camera. Went home with lots of pic

Great as ever!

  • 5 of 5

This was our 4th stay at English Lake and as always we and the girls loved it. The property is pristine and the accommodations are top notch. Warm lake water provided swimming for everyone every day. Just remember to bring enough bug repelant with you 'cause these flying creatures can get nasty in the evenings. If you fish, you can find them. The lake is small enough to learn it quickly. I got enough crappies for a fish fry and also caught 12 northerns and some bass.

Beautiful area, beautiful cabin, some gotchas to know

  • 3 of 5

The owner is very friendly and communicated information very well. The cabin is located on a very secluded lake and you can really focus on nature here. The lake is easy to navigate and provided good fishing, even though the weather had ideas of its own. We have stayed in cabins (in Wisconsin) before, so that was why we choose to venture out farther and see the Mellen area.

We rented a pontoon boat from a friend of the owner, and that was certainly a highlight of our trip. Our goal was to enjoy fishing, boating, mountain biking, hiking at Copper Falls, and get up to Ashland. Luckily, the weather had breaks that allowed for all of these things to be accomplished.

The pluses are many and the vacation was about nature, but we are not going to tent-it, and with teenagers, there are basic needs. There are a few things that need some addressing, and wi-fi was one. Very slow connection speeds, typically less than 2 Mbps. No Youtube or Netflix possible and on some of the rainy nights, that was disappointing. All of us on Verizon had great trouble with calls and almost no data to be had. Best luck was away from the cabin, either down the driveway or on the lake. That was a big issue for some of us that needed to maintain a connection to work and customers for periods of time.

The showers in the bathrooms had the worst shower heads I have ever experienced. The Menard's $5 heads here were an issue for the ladies in the group wishing to properly wash their hair. Arriving and leaving the cabin was an experience. The rock road is a slurry when wet and there is a serious amount of time spent to get to the paved roads from the cabin. Waze added 20 minutes just to get from cabin to asphalt, and it wasn't lying. The weird part was arriving to have everyone claim rooms, only to find clothes in the drawers. I guess the owner uses the place as well, but it was a bit unwelcoming to show up and not be able to really unpack and feel at home. I think there were many wonderful reasons to enjoy the cabin and we certainly did have a great time there. Unfortunately, no one wanted to return to that exact cabin for any future vacations.

Owner's Response: Tom thanks for the review and for calling some of your concerns to our attention. We are on a holding tank system at English but I will replace the water saver shower heads. My apologies too for finding the sweaters in the lower bedroom drawers yes I do use the cabin on occasion but these should have been removed. The internet unfortunately is on a very expensive satellite system but it doesn't have enough bandwidth to stream Netflix. Hopefully technology will improve for our remote setting in time. Thanks for staying at English. Gregg McArthur

What a great cabin and hospitality. We absolutely love it.

  • 5 of 5

We have been to many cabins in the past but this is definitely the most equipped, accomodating, and beautiful cabin of all. The owner, Gregg, was very responsive and nice person to work with. I have absolutely no complain. We stayed three nights and love every single day of it.
