One (queen bed) bedroom, one bath. 'Above the treetops' view!
The top level of the house - where you stay - sits above the palm tree level - therefore having extraordinary views. The living quarters have a wraparound porch on three sides - so you have a nearly 360 degree view of the sea, the surrounding islands, passing boats & truly incredible sunsets.
The living quarters has its own private entrance, bedroom, living room, bathroom (shower, sink and toilet), plus a large kitchen with refrigerator, stove and sink and plenty of counter space for cooking your own delicious Caribbean dishes if you so choose. We have an outdoor grill for fixing fresh lobster, crab, or whatever seafood or meat you choose. Enjoy relaxing in a hammock while enjoying the view - right on the shore of the lovely indigo colored waters of Indigo Bay, and within one mile of the stunning great barrier reef of the Caribbean Sea.
At the water's edge we have a private, very rustic pier -perfect for watching sunsets, birds, or for casting a line for delicious red snapper. Just recently, a brand new pier has been built 50 yards from our house. Most all of our guests bring fishing poles and have great luck catching fish.
Our large charcoal grill at the house is then perfect for grilling your catch .
We have a complimentary 1-person kayak available for your pleasure, which allows you to venture completely around the island and then return to your own personal dock. Come and relax!
Our use of vrbo.com stopped for several months, as we used a couple of other websites exclusively, but now we are starting up with vrbo.com again.
Amenities: Clean sheeted queen size bed in the bedroom. Also, two 4-drawer dressers are in the bedroom.
The Living Room has a couch, table & 4 chairs, and a comfortable reading chair next to our book/game shelf.
Bath towels & Beach towels are in the bathroom, plus a small safe in which to lock your valuables.
Recently upgraded solar panels & wind turbine on our roof provide on-demand heated water for showers, and electricity for the home.
The Indigo Pearl is a well built house at the S.W. tip of the island. If you look at the 'google map' (by clicking the 'Location tab'), we are located in the 'cutout' area at the southwest tip of the island.
Our home is simple and basic, yet very spacious, unique, private and with a view you can't get anywhere in town! We provide so much more than many other choices for rental:
*Fully furnished kitchen: 4-burner stove, oven, refrigerator, freezer, blender, toaster, French Press coffeemaker, dishes, pots/pans, coffee grinder; The water is clean and filtered for drinking.
*Complimentary use of 2 (total) bikes,($20 USD/day value - each).
*Use of our own kayak each day ($25 USD/day value). (Additional kayak(s) can be rented from town.)
*Free wi-fi at the house.
*We supply the use of a cell phone. (for local calls -- to our caretaker, a golf cart taxi, etc.)
*Our location is our main value: we are right on the sea, in a gorgeous private location amidst the palms of the jungle. No, you are not right in town - our house is for people who do not want to be right in town:)
As you look at the photo of our house you can see that the top level is for guests, the middle level is unused, and the bottom level is storage.
Do not choose us if you want to be 'pampered' - choose our house if you love adventure and you want to live as Belizeans do. If you DON'T need A/C or a TV, and if you DO enjoy riding bikes, and you DON'T mind being a 15 min. bike ride from the edge of town, and if you DO like getting some exercise, and if you are NOT afraid of inadvertently crushing a crab with your bike tire, and you DO value peace, beauty, open spaces, and an unbelievable panoramic view over the sea, then we think you would LOVE our house. We personally live in 10 acres of secluded land in Illinois, and we love being away from crowds. We like the opportunity to go to town when we want to, but otherwise we value privacy. That is why we choose this location. It is exactly what we love, and we want to share it with others who enjoy peace and quiet and beauty also.
It's been a learning curve for us to realize that not everyone thinks like we do or values what we do. We want it to be perfectly clear that our house is not fancy - those places are on the nearby traffic jammed island of Ambergris Caye. Our house is simple and clean.
We will call you to chat before we finalize a rental time for you.
We have made HUGE improvements to our house since we first purchased it. Our daughter lived at the house for nearly a year after we purchased it, and she absolutely treasured her days there. Than, 2 years later she wanted to return to honeymoon long-term with her new husband. They got to enjoy living at the house for 8 months then in 2013-2014 and acted as our caretakers;
Caye Caulker is fabulous -- come with a sense of adventure! Don't expect life as in the U.S. and you will be pleasantly surprised. Caye Caulker is a very simple island. If you want the uniqueness of the sand streets and the no-cars atmosphere, then please don't expect luxury. Enjoy the little island for its simplicity and you will be happy. All you need are a few changes of clothes, croc shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, insect repellent, (we are in a jungle in Central America!!) a swimsuit and a willingness to try something new and fun!
The restaurants are unique, amazing, and friendly - just like the locals here! You may eat out at the many quaint restaurants or, you may shop at one of the 5 local tiny grocery stores and cook back 'at home on our large charcoal grill.
The half-acre surrounding the house is sandy with a lovely assortment of palms and coconut trees, providing either sun or shade as you prefer.
Our caretaker will, upon your arrival, send a taxi to pick you up at the water taxi or local airport with a golf-cart (the local 'taxi') and get you and your luggage to our house. (Arrival and departure to the house via golf cart taxi is the guest's responsibility and is payable right to the taxi driver...)
The Indigo Pearl Guesthouse is peacefully located at the quiet south-end of the island, directly on the coastline overlooking the crystal blue waters of the Caribbean, and offering absolutely stunning views of the Caribbean sea, AND gorgeous sunsets! Our location is large and secluded, directly on Indigo Bay.
Bike (15 minutes), walk (25 minutes), kayak/boat (private pier) or golf-cart the 1 mile to the edge of the quaint, small local town via an authentic, rough and bumpy jungle path along the coast.
Enjoy a friendly, laidback, barefoot local scene of restaurants, stores, bars, beaches & dive shops, or, water-taxi to nearby Ambergris Caye Island (the busy town of San Pedro) or back to Belize City. Local snorkel trips are small groups, inexpensively priced, & STUNNING! (there is even a trip to swim with sharks & pet sting rays.) Local fishing trips offer to cook your catch! The opportunities for relaxation OR for fun are endless!!!
Caye Caulker is a very unique and quite laid-back little island. There are no resorts or such luxuries. Just the simple life. No cars, no rush, just friendly locals and a slowed pace. The main reason people come to Caye Caulker are snorkeling off the barrier reef, fishing, diving, and just relaxing. We strongly recommend a trip out on a boat for a snorkel trip or a "booze cruise" or fishing. Such trips can be arranged once you get there, and are inexpensive and very memorable. Swimming and snorkeling off the edges of the island just do not compare to a trip out to the reef. Lots of people also go back to the mainland to tour the ruins, or, more popular to go Cave Tubing. We actually have never done either - we just prefer to stay on the island. We provide 2 bikes for your stay and I LOVE biking into town every day when we are there. Or, you can walk. Golf cart rental is available for $250 USD / week, but you won't get to town any faster, and it just seems like a hassle. We prefer the bikes or to walk. The location of the house itself is very relaxing. We love the ability to be secluded, or, to choose to go into the town. We bought a large charcoal grill in January this year and it is WONDERFUL for grilling out suppers at the house, such as fresh red snapper or barracuda steaks or lobster. The fishing is very good from the 2 piers near our house. The swimming is not great at the house as the sea bottom all around the island tends to be "mucky" due to the proximity of the barrier reef. The water is very shallow for quite a ways out, and I prefer to take the kayak out - even to go all around the island with it - than to swim there. You can also rent a second solo kayak in town if you both want to go out at the same time.
Beaches on Caye Caulker are all man-made and the beaches in town are not like in resorts where you can walk into the sandy water. Caye Caulker is not like that. "Beaches" are usually bordered by a seawall. Caye Caulker is a lot of simple, relaxed fun. The excursions are wonderful and the people are the real deal. I hope you can plan to stay! Once you book a stay, I send you lots of informative emails about Caye Caulker, getting there, restaurants, FAQ, etc.
If you are adventurous and flexible and have no need to be "pampered" then you will love Caye Caulker. It is a unique place!

Indigo Pearl is certainly secluded as described. We chose this for exactly that reason. We enjoyed the covered 3rd floor porch with wonderful views of the Caribbean Sea and the lagoon right in front of the house. We could watch the fish and the crocodiles from our vantage point. We observed many different birds and identified them with the help of the book there, "Birds of Belize." That was delightful as we have not been "birders." We had no issues with the solar powered electricity. Linda was remarkably helpful with all her emails and advice prior to our arrival. That helped us feel comfortable from the beginning. If we get back to Caye Caulker, we would certainly consider staying here again.
My husband and I truly enjoyed our time at Indigo Pearl
The place was just as described. It met our needs perfectly. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed. I even enjoyed using the cookbooks provided. We had no issues being off the grid. We are conservers by nature, but always had lights, hot showers, etc. Mack and Rebecca were there to get us started and although we didn’t need attention from them, we knew they were at the ready should a need arise. The bikes provided were invaluable. We so enjoyed our rides in and out of town. What a perfect way to travel. Views are great also. Sand fleas did eat us even though we tried the mentioned remedies but that’s just Mother Nature. If you like being off the beaten path and a little “roughing it” this is the place for you.
The two of you were a perfect fit for our house! You enjoyed being off grid, you liked the fact that we are not located right in town, and you enjoyed the use of the bikes that we provide for our guests! In exchange for not being right in town, you got one of the absolute best views of the sea on the entire island, peace and quiet, privacy and good exercise so that you can eat whatever you like. I'm glad you used the cookbooks I've put together - I've included many traditional Belizian dishes and recipes for seafood dishes too. I hope you can come again for another stay some day ~
Isolated Island Jungle Bliss
This place was perfect for the two of us. We wanted something simple and off the beaten path where we could chill and slow down: we got exactly that. Linda was very upfront about that and helpful in providing us with useful tidbits about getting what you need on the Island.
- slow gorgeous bike rides to and from town
- grilling lobster we bought directly from fisherman near Fisherman's Coop
- sand flies and mosquitoes
- couldn't swim in the the bay in front of the house; super mucky and shallow
Thank you for your kind review! We do everything we can to insure that our guests have a great stay. Yes, some things are beyond the control of anyone on Caye Caulker, such as the sandfies (that come out mainly just at dawn and dusk,) and the fact that the close proximity of the barrier reef prevents any measurable sand from washing in to the island shores. (Actually, I can't think of a single rental property on the entire island where you can just walk right in to the water from nice sand. It just doesn't exist.) If a Caye Caulker rental has a "beach" it is most likely a seawall beach, which is sand brought in, but with no access to the water itself. That is even the way it is at The Split. The only place where you find a typical beach of sorts on Caye Caulker is in the center of town, where you will see one or two small public beach areas.IF you love snorkeling, sailing, fishing, scuba and abundant peace, quiet, and relaxation, then our place is perfect for you!
I totally agree with you regarding the love of the beauty and peace of the bike ride to town. The pathway is full of interesting plants and birds and the sea follows all along the path. I go on a bike ride every day that I am there. So yes, the bikes are a great feature.
And I'm happy that you loved the location of our house - that it is indeed off the "beaten path" You don't have the noises of town such as late night music. We value our privacy and it sounds like you did too. Come back again and enjoy the beautiful views from our balcony and the total immersion in relaxation! Thanks!!!
Private and comfortable with spectacular views!
We so enjoyed our stay at The Indigo Pearl. We loved Caye Caulker, we loved the bikes being our mode of transportation, we loved the grill, and we loved playing Yahtzee by candlelight. This property was clean and perfect for our home-base. We lost electricity quite a bit, but that’s where the candles came in! Mack, the caretaker, was available and beyond helpful. I misbooked our dates and Joe and Linda graciously offered to extend our stay...a pretty sweet touch especially when traveling in a foreign country. We truly loved it all!
Thank you for the kind words ~ we're so glad that you loved your stay. We heard from Rebecca and Mack that you were very happy. Thanks for taking good care of the house and we hope you can come back soon ~
Indigo Pearl -- EXACTLY what we were looking for!
We have been back to the states (MA) for only a few days, and are already talking about our next trip to Belize, and specifically Caye Caulker. Our experience was fantastic, and all of the information provided by Linda before our trip (in addition to answering all of my questions) was invaluable as we both planned our visit, and lived each moment on the island to its fullest! My initial conversation with Joe was interesting, and useful -- as he had to "size us up" to determine if we could handle this unique vacation home. If you are looking for an adventure -- are in reasonably good health (can walk or bike), you will love your stay at Indigo Pearl. We had not ridden bikes for 20+ years, but had no problem riding into town 2-3 times every day. The house was perfect for our needs -- lots of hot water, functional kitchen, great views, clean and comfortable. We loved the seclusion, and didn't even notice we were "off-the-grid" (although we were aware enough to conserve both water and power).
The Indigo Pearl gave us the perfect home base to enjoy Caye Caulker. We felt like "locals" from our first night there, enjoying dinner at Fran's (unlimited coconut rum punch doesn't hurt either!). In general, the food was great -- from street vendors (you must find the "cake lady" across the basketball court) to the many restaurants in town. If you want to do your own cooking, we loved buying food at Chicken Depot (although they were often out of shrimp) and several other stores in town. The rum and hot sauce was plentiful and GREAT!
Perhaps the biggest surprise for us though -- was the quality of the snorkeling. Caveman Snorkeling might be the best "tour" on the planet -- and we have been on snorkeling tours in Australia (Great Barrier Reef), Hawaii, Caribbean, and Florida, but nothing beat what we experienced with Caveman Snorkeling. The barrier reef (evidently second largest) was vibrant, and alive (parts of Australia's barrier reef is dying), and much to my surprise, really easy to get to from Caye Caulker. We swam with sharks, rays, turtles, and lots of reef fish, and could not have been happier with the day we had (and it was supposedly a "rough" day out with more wind than normal). If we were in town for more than a week, we would have probably gone out another day or two!
The bottom line is that we loved our time on Caye Caulker and at the Indigo Pearl, and look forward to our next trip back! It was quite the perfect adventure for us!
Amazing Stay in Caye Caulker!
I loved Caye Caulker SO much! Linda and Joe's place was wonderful and exactly what I needed! I work so much and I truly needed solitude and privacy in a tropical paradise, and as someone who usually stays at resorts when going on vacation, this was a MUCH needed escape that I truly thought was perfect and relaxing. I also want to state I had never been to Belize before. Prior to my trip Linda emailed me with so much great information that when I got to the island I felt like I was already a native and had been living there! It was so easy to get to the island via water taxi, and the island itself being so small was super easy to navigate-the bikes were fantastic! The baskets were perfect for toting whatever I needed to bring to the Split for the day, or for carrying groceries back to the house. At night I would call a golf cart taxi with the cell phone Linda & Joe provided me to pick me up for dinner, which was super convenient.
Linda and Joe's home has everything you could possibly need- full kitchen and fridge/freezer(packed with ice!), mosquito coils, a beautiful wraparound porch(with a hammock!), and the best views HANDS DOWN on the island! Sunset was my favorite time of day, sipping a cocktail and enjoying the beautiful view on the porch. I ate most of my meals in town, so I didn't cook too much, but everything needed to do your own cooking is available to you. It is off-the-grid living, something I am used to having traveled to Africa (which was way more off-the grid than this) so it didn't bother me at all. I did keep 2 pitchers of water in the fridge at all times because it does get HOT!
If you do a snorkeling trip I HIGHLY recommend Caveman tours- he does not seek you out/pester you for your business and he has a small shack right on the ocean and you must find him. Him and his crew are excellent! They kept the groups small so we could all see as much as possible and they were super informative about the marine life and the reef.
The food on the island was fantastic! I tried as many places as I could-from Belizean food to Italian food (Il Pelicano was a real treat!) they were all great. You couldn't go wrong, and the food is cheap enough to eat all your meals in town without having to cook. Again, I couldn't thank Linda and Joe enough for their hospitality, their excellent info prior to my trip and their amazing home. I will definitely be back to Caye Caulker in the future, you better BELIZE it! Peace & Love <3
The island of Caye Caulker is quite unique. There are only 3 main north/south streets, and all are sand. No paved streets. Only 3 or 4 cars/trucks are operational on the entire island. By far, the main transportation is by golf cart, bike, or walking. In town, there are several good guides for fishing, snorkeling and scuba trips. These trips plus the quiet simple life of Caye Caulker are the main attractions of this island. You will meet people from all over the world! It may take you a day to get acclimated to the carefree pace of Caye Caulker, but before long the island motto 'Go Slow' will become your mantra too. Take it easy, don't get too excited and relax and enjoy! The local people here are not in a hurry at all!
If you go to Google Maps on your computer and type in Caye Caulker, Belize you will see our house and long pier at the southern (south west actually) tip of the island! It is near the little island grove of mangroves (a circular dot) just off the coast in the little inlet there.
