Tucked away in a narrow gorge just off the Highland Scenic Highway is a hidden treasure known as the Falls of Hills Creek Scenic Area. This popular 114 acre area contains three waterfalls - 25 feet, 45 feet, and 63 feet. The lower falls, at 63 feet is the second highest waterfall in West Virginia....MoreCollapse
The Cranberry Glades is the largest area of bogs, or acidic wetlands, in West Virginia, a unique and exotic ecosystem on 750 acres. This spectacular and beautiful area was established by the United States Forest Service in 1965, to protect and preserve over 60 unique plant species, many of them descended from seeds that took root here over 10,000 years ago....MoreCollapse
The Highland Scenic Highway, a designated National Scenic Byway, is a beautiful corridor through the National Forest. This Byway extends 43 miles from Richwood to US Route 219. It has four developed scenic overlooks. Each site provides a comfortable rest stop, with a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Beartown State Park is a natural area of 107 acres located on the eastern summit of Droop Mountain, seven miles southwest of Hillsboro, West Virginia. The land was purchased in 1970 with funds from the Nature Conservancy and a donation from Mrs. Edwin G. Polan, in memory of her son, Ronald Keith Neal, who lost his life in the Vietnam War. Development of the park has been minimal in order to preserve the natural attractions of the area. However, basic facilities are provided, and a boardwalk permits easy access. Interpretive signs along the boardwalk guide visitors and provide insights concerning the ecology of the area. The park is open daily from April to October. During the closed winter season foot travel to the boardwalk...MoreCollapse
Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park is located in the Greenbrier River Valley north of Lewisburg and is the site of West Virginia's last significant Civil War battle. On November 6, 1863, the federal army of Brigadier General William W. Averell, in his second attempt to disrupt the Virginia-Tennessee Railroad at Salem, Virginia, faced again the Confederate troops of Brigadier General John Echols. Throughout the morning, Echols' smaller confederate army held the high ground and blocked the highway with artillery, but in the afternoon was overwhelmed by the crushing advance of federal infantry on his left flank. Following the collapse of his lines, General Echols retreated south into Virginia with the remnants of his command....MoreCollapse

About the owner: I am a 4th generation West Virginian that wanted to build a remote Lodge near the National Forest.
Why the Owner Chose Hillsboro, WV, USA:
We love the 'cool' temperatures of the mountains. We wanted property with no neighbors. We found it. Nearest neighbor 2 miles away. We began building in 1990, 4 years later we opened. Over the years we have made several improvements; more solar panels, hydro electric , trout pond, etc.. Love the WV mountains and you will too.
The Unique Benefits at this Lodge:
Entirely Off the Grid; Solar, Hydro and Wind Power the Lodge. Adjacent to a vast National Forest & Trail System. Amazing stars at night. No bugs. Really. Sit on the deck without getting 'eaten alive' as visitors to other vacation destinations will tell you. Very unique lodging experience.
