Thanksgiving in the mountains
My sister and I, our spouses, children, and dogs enjoyed our Thanksgiving in the WV mountains. We were even treated to a light snow one of the nights. The house property were exactly as expected. The house has absolutely everything that you can imagine or need. Plenty of bedding, towels, and the kitchen was very well stocked. John was an excellent host and very helpful when the cloudy days depleted the solar energy store and we needed to start the generator. We loved our stay and would definitely consider returning.

Unmatched Peace and Seclusion
This property is very unique and a gem of a find on VRBO. It's tucked up at 4,000 feet in SE West Virginia, Far from civilization but not so remote that it's eerie feeling or tedious to get to "the world" when necessary. This is truly an off-grid place to disappear at and gain peace of mind and peace of heart. John is an excellent owner and VRBO Rep and cares deeply about this special home and location. I highly recommend experiencing West Virginia Bliss in the mountains. This is a truly memorable place.

Incredible Mountain Getaway
Would 100% recommend this property. We chose the Cranberry Mountain Lodge as our wedding venue, and it was magical. The property was spectacular, and John and Linda went above and beyond to accommodate our requests. It rained during our wedding, but then we woke up to a mountain sunrise with fog in the valley and the autumn leaves shining through. Simply incredible!

Cranberry lodge. We really enjoyed our stay at John’s cabin. It is spacious, comfortable and has everything you might need. The views from the deck are breathtaking!!! You feel like you are floating in the beautiful mountain scenery. There are so many things to do around the cabin— hiking, swimming playing various games. John was very welcoming and responsive host. All of our questions were answered in a very timely manner. Thank you, John!!

Beautiful, Huge, and Immacutely Clean House in WVA Mountains
There are so many positives I'm not sure where to start. First off John is an amazing host- responsive, informative, direct, helpful. The house itself is beautiful, quiet, enormous, with all the amenities you could need. It's rustic ambiance and furnishings with a kitchen loaded with modern appliances and really anything you might use. Everything was incredibly clean- rooms, bathrooms, kitchen and the property itself so well tended to- which there is a lot of!There's hiking right out the back door and tons to do within 20-30 minutes. It's a special place to appreciate the beauty and your surroundings in sheer quiet- like hearing the wind blow quiet. If you appreciate this kind of stuff, you will be delighted as the house is so comfortable and spacious- it's makes it easy to get away. Thank you John!

The perfect place during normal times or during a pandemic
We are already strategizing about how and when to return. John is a terrific host and it is clear that the Cranberry Lodge -- built by him, his wife and father -- is a labor of love. How very fortunate we all felt (12 of us) to get to stay there and enjoy the beautiful mountains, the serene atmosphere, the cool nights and the isolation. Wow!! We could not recommend it more highly. The only challenge is that wifi and cell servife is spotty, but that leaves more time to enjoy the beauty.

Great Views
The views are breath taking and make the 15 minute driveway worth the drive! The lodge is beautiful, the pond is perfect, great bonfires, and views for days. Guests be warned though the WiFi is not what we were anticipating. We were told 2-3 streaming devices would work on the internet, sadly one device could barely open a page. We were downloading at 1.7 mbps. He informed us ahead of time that ATT has coverage at the lodge. We got some reception and were told there was a repeater to strengthen the signal. What we weren’t told is that the phone needs to sit directly below the repeater in order to work to make a hot spot. Overall we made it work, but I do not advise going if you intend on working remotely. The hottub also did not work. He was very clear up front that it was not a traditional hottub which we were ok with. The problem is there was a valve missing and the hottub couldn’t hold water. We mentioned it on day is one and sent pics but it was never fixed. On the last few days the septic tank also backed up flooding the basement with the backup. He was unable to get anyone up there to fix anything while we were there.... but the views!

More Amazing than the listing says!
I did not realize the National Park was really in the backyard. We can hop on a trail right behind the backyard. It is also a trail maintained for mountain bikers, and we got to meet the folks maintaining the trail. Use MTB project app for that! We spent almost everyday swimming in the little pond. The kids loved finding newts in the pond. The view is phenomenal. We were there for 4th of July, and while super small and quiet, we could see about 5 different places doing fireworks that night, because your view is so expansive. The owner was just so amazing and attentive to details too! I also really enjoyed seeing all the off-grid stuff, and loved learning about it while I was there. The house is amazing, and so much room, skylights, lots of windows, just beautiful. There is also so much to do, we worried about that with our kids for a whole week, but the only times we left were when we were hiking on the trail in the backyard, which leads right to the nature museum/info center with live snakes, and lots of fun learning for the kids. Some of the things we brought to do weren't even opened, because we just didn't need it. The property was beautiful, well maintained, and just lovely. And the icing on the cake is having an owner who is so lovely and helpful, but we also didn't need the help, but we knew he was there. I could go on and on, but I think you get the picture - amazing place!!!

The property was perfect!!!!
PROS: We loved everything about the property. The open spaces made it very easy for our party of 20 to spread out but still be all together. John thought of everything by including extra blankets for those who get cold easily and fans for those who are hot natured. There are also TWO refrigerators in the kitchen!!!! CONS: My cousin was so very disappointed that the hot tub couldn’t be used after she spent so much time cleaning it. All of the joints were leaking, so it could hold enough water to run it. The driveway could use a few loads of gravel to fill in what the recent rains washed away. It’s pretty rough.

Spacious Delightful Secluded Retreat
This is a great space in a beautiful location. While this rental is only for 22 people there is lots of space with four floors and an expansive property, there is room everyone to find a space of their own. The pond is a real treat, spring fed, with cool clean water beloved by salamanders. It feels special that the electricity is completely off the grid. The road up is pretty challenging so come prepared to stay up on the mountain for a couple of days. Cell service is nonexistent and the internet is spotty sometimes so keep the focus on the people you've gathered with. Still, it is worth a day trip over to Falls of Hills Creek and the owner is very helpful in providing information about the area. The hot tub is pretty DIY, but worth filling for a night sitting under the amazing stars. The kitchen is very well stocked with dishes and pots and pans and the porch and fire ring make great informal gathering spaces.

Great get away home for large groups!
My family takes a vacation every summer, and we have anywhere from 8-14 people that we need accommodations for. The Cranberry Mountain Lodge provided us with a wonderful space and had absolutely BREATHTAKING views. John was very helpful to our family, and was able to answer any questions we had. There is a humidifier that has been added in the basement, so any worries about musty rooms can be taken away. The Kitchen/Living area were huge and left us with plenty of room during the times we were in there. Multiple fire pits were available, along with firewood. We were able to see some wildlife on the trek up the mountain to the lodge which was amazing. The only downfall is the long drive up the mountain, but you would not be able to get a view like this house has without it! (just make sure to have a 4 wheel drive vehicle!) My family definitely loved our stay at the Cranberry Mountain Lodge!!

Fantastic escape for a guys weekend
I organized a group of 11 guys to adventure to this oasis in the woods for a bachelor party and weekend of outdoor adventures. Nothing disappointed at all, and the accommodations, views, surrounding nature, and tranquility were absolutely perfect. This house truly has everything you need. Two fridges, tons of kitchen amenities, lots of dry wood, directions for every necessary power element, and the most stunning views of the West Virginia mountains we have ever seen. The drive up in the summer isn't too bad, we had low clearance cars that made it just fine. It rained all day our second day but we made the best of it and still hiked the trails behind the house. Rooms are plentiful and water pressure for showers is quite nice considering you are off the grid. All around 5-star experience. Would absolutely return again and can only imagine winter is even more fun. Don't miss this unique home!

Fantastic property
The property was everything promised. I brought a group of 9 friends for Labor Day weekend. John was incredibly helpful, and I couldn't ask for much more from an owner. The kitchen was impeccably stocked and there was plenty of seating and dining/living room. The view was out of this world, the photos don't quite do it justice. Highly recommended, and I hope to return soon!

Cranberry Lodge
This is the second time our extended family has used the lodge, the last being two years ago. Even though it is a great distance from our home in Florida (800 miles), all 16 of us elected to return, and we will probably rent it again at some time in the future. It is hard to have quality time with children and grandchildren, but this affords it. We have been fortunate enough in our life to visit many beautiful places in the world, but none are more tranquil than this. The owners have made significant improvements to the property over the years, which make it even more accomadating. If you like relaxing, fellowship, hiking and nature watching, this is the place. It is an excellent place for large family gatherings.

Wedding Day made by this location. Couldn't have been more happy
I'm always weary about going to these sites without knowing the owners. This home was beyond what we were looking for. The view made our wedding that much better. The pictures we were able to get from the cabin and by the pond will make our memories for years to come exciting. John and Linda reached out multiple times to make sure things were going well. They had everything you could possibly need when staying somewhere which came as a surprise to me. My wife and I will stay here more in the years to come as well will our families and friends that stayed with us. Thank you again John and Linda for allowing our special day to be absolutely incredible we can't begin to show you how grateful we are. We would recommend this cabin to anyone thinking about staying here.

I am a 4th generation West Virginian that wanted to build a remote Lodge near the National Forest.

Why they chose this property

We love the 'cool' temperatures of the mountains. We wanted property with no neighbors. We found it. Nearest neighbor 2 miles away. We began building in 1990, 4 years later we opened. Over the years we have made several improvements; more solar panels, hydro electric , trout pond, etc.. Love the WV mountains and you will too.

What makes this property unique

Entirely Off the Grid; Solar, Hydro and Wind Power the Lodge. Adjacent to a vast National Forest & Trail System. Amazing stars at night. No bugs. Really. Sit on the deck without getting 'eaten alive' as visitors to other vacation destinations will tell you. Very unique lodging experience.
