About the property

Lovely Little Ranch House on 20 Acres; 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Come stay at our lovely home in Calamity Creek at an elevation of nearly a mile high on the most beautiful land on earth.

While relaxing in the swings and hammocks on our wraparound porch, enjoy breathtaking views of Cathedral Mountain, McIntyre Peak and Mount Ord. Located just 15 minutes south of Alpine, 45 minutes from both Marfa's Chianti Foundation and the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute of Fort Davis, an hour's drive from McDonald Observatory and under two hours from Big Bend National Park and the Rio Grande, there's plenty of West Texas exploring for guests of all ages. Or, stay put at the ranch and enjoy the fresh breeze, sunny skies and starlit nights.

Our home, which is located a half mile from the highway by way of a well-maintained dirt road, is both pleasingly remote without a neighbor in view, and still just 15 minutes from the nearest grocery store and other town amenities. Best of all, our home is situated on 20 acres with several trails for long, meandering walks. We pride ourselves on our cool and refreshing well water -- straight from the lush and natural West Texas igneous aquifers.

During your visit at our ranch home, you can sit back and take in our truly magnificent sunsets and catch sight of wildlife from antelope, mule deer and jack rabbits to javelina and a plethora of birds. Depending on the season, the landscape is also full of butterflies, lizards, crickets and wildflowers. And if you’re lucky, you might even see the Marfa Lights from the swing on the front porch. Really, we’ve seen them!

The house itself has two bedrooms downstairs -- one with a full-size bed in a cheery room with a hand-painted mural of an apple tree, the other is a periwinkle-painted room with a queen bed, oriental rug and a vintage dresser. Upstairs is a bright lofted bedroom with a stunning view of Cathedral Mountain, a contemporary queen bed, and a long, two-person writing/work space. All of the beds are made up with crisp, white, cotton linens and soft, down pillows and duvets. There is a full bath on the first floor fully stocked with the fresh linens and local, handmade soaps. The kitchen will satisfy all of you're cooking needs with a gas stove and oven, microwave, coffee maker and a brand new refrigerator. The cupboards are stocked with spices and oils, paper towels, dishtowels, and all of the kitchen basics you might need. The great room, which sits under vaulted ceilings and has windows all around to take in the mountain views, has plenty of comfortable seating and a dresser full of games for the whole family. The dining area boasts a well-worn, heirloom table that is set for six, but has extensions to seat up to ten. Just behind the main house is a separate casita with an additional bathroom with sink, toilet, shower and laundry facilities.

We are sure that you, like many before, will thoroughly enjoy our vacation home and won't want to leave. It truly provides an affordable, quiet and beautiful respite like none other.

Wonderful place to unplug and star gaze!

  • 4 of 5

This property is wonderful. A quaint cottage with comfortable setting and wonderful star gazing. Kitchen is adequate, though just a bit cramped. Housekeeper prior to visit did not clean enough (dust bunnies, sticky countertops and stove, burnt food in oven) but that can be easily rectified. Two couples and one 13-year old having to share one (indoor) bathroom was a bit of a challenge but the "casita" bathroom helps when you don't mind going outside. We would definitely recommend this place. Just might suggest they hire a better cleaning service.

Owner's Response: We are so very sorry about the situation our guests encountered in regards to cleanliness. This is the first time this has ever happened. And it will certainly be the last. We can only guess that the reason it happened was a combination of two rare circumstances. First, we booked two guests back-to-back, leaving a limited time to clean and prep the house. And this was combined with the fact that our beloved and trusted housekeeper was due to have a baby any day. (She had a beautiful girl a week later.) Our sincere apologies for the error, but we thank you for letting us know. Kindly, Katherine & Tom

Clean and secluded on a beautiful property in the mountains

  • 5 of 5

We loved our visit for a motorcycle tour of Big Bend and surrounding area. The home was quaint, welcoming and located in the middle of 140 acres of beautiful west Texas mountains. Everything was clean, and there was nothing left out from cookware to coffee pot. We truly enjoyed our vacation watching sunrises and sunsets, and touring the area in between. If you love the mountains, fresh air and stunning views, this is definitely the place to go.

Breathtaking seclusion under the stars of West Texas!

  • 5 of 5

This is our 3rd stay at this cozy home tucked into a ranch community south of Alpine. We love this cozy ranch house for its location and breathtaking scenery. To be able to relax on the porch in the daytime and watch a thunderstorm roll in is an awesome sight. But then, to come home each evening and see God's beauty unfold in the heavens is even more magical! The Milky Way, the shooting stars and the unobstructed night sky is hard to find anywhere else!

We feel fortunate that the Shaughnessy's have shared their home for others to experience this great place in Texas!

P.S. The peach tree in the front yard was going bonkers with peaches during our visit -- yum!

Above and Beyond Expectations

  • 5 of 5

This is our best VRBO pick yet! We stayed during Thanksgiving week and brought our two kids (4 & 1.5 yrs old) The house was perfectly equipped with everything we needed and more. (i.e. toys for the kids, every kitchen item/spice/coffee you could need, a high chair, umbrellas, grill, little fire pit, hammock, swing, blankets to snuggle outside, washer/dryer, internet, linens for the dinning table, etc.) The location was perfect and the house is tucked away in the hills, which made every drive in and our of the property a part of the excitement for our kids. I cannot put into words how much we loved this house. Also, the loft (w/ stairs) with a queen size bed was a surprise to us and we ended up putting each kid in a room and we slept in the loft and woke up to beautiful view of the hills. In addition to the perfect place to stay, the owners were so kind, responsive and thoughtful throughout the whole process from booking, to arriving, to questions, to a late check out. We will most definitely be back to West Texas and to this house again soon!

Beautiful view! Secluded

  • 5 of 5

We had a great experience at this home. The location is secluded and the view of the Davis mountains is beautiful. We spent a lot of time on the wrap around porch. We stocked up on food at the natural food market just up the road. Our children enjoyed playing with the games and toys in the living room, picking plums off the plumb tree in the front yard, and lounging in the hammock. It is located about 15 minutes south of Alpine and is a great launching off point for day trips to area towns (Marfa, Marathon, Fort Davis) as well as Big Bend National Park. Katherine was very helpful in giving us suggestions about what to do in the area. We highly recommend staying here!

Marfa is just 45 minutes away and one of the most beautiful drives in the country. Marfa is the home of Chinati Foundation, Ballroom Marfa and many other contemporary art galleries and instituions. There are several natural hot springs in the area Chinati Hot Springs and the Hot Springs along the Rio Grande in Big Bend National Park. Far west Texas has some of the darkest skies in the U.S. McDonald Observatory is the place to go to view the stars.
