Cabin was rustic, but very comfortable. Character! Well-appointed. Owner was extremely easy to work with and very friendly. Convenient to Washington and Lee University via back roads.

It was so lovely to have Ken and his guests stay at the cabin. There was a snafu with the water heater that required some maintenance and Ken was extremely gracious about the inconvenience while it was repaired. All left the house in spectacular order; I could not ask for better guests. I sincerely hope Ken will visit Retreat By The Rivah again with a discount for his patience and flexibility. Best Wishes and thanks for spreading the word!
This was a quick weekend trip to see some pretty fall colors. The location is beautiful and the cabin was fantastic. Everything was clean and taken care of and the host was very responsive. I would definitely go again.

So happy you and the kids had fun! Come back again, we just finished the FirePit and the River is a blast in the summer. Much to do!! Take care and thank you for being lovely guests!
The cabin was a great place to stay. It offered many opportunities locally for outdoor adventure. However, we were not there for that amenity. If looking for a get away from everything place, this is it. Beautiful surroundings.

Hi Laura, thanks for your review. I'm curious, why did you leave 4 stars and not 5? Just asking as a new host for your feedback. My goal is to make it a 5 star stay every time ;)
It was a great hideaway where we could walk, rest, eat and celebrate! A little bit of a drive (15 min) to campus, so it’s not like you are staying downtown. However, if you are from any city, it’s no big deal! Screened in porch with a swing, a fire pit and a hot tub! Such attention to detail in the house and so clean! We will be back for future stays! :)

Karen and her family were dream guests!! Very communicative, kind and went out if their way to take care of the cabin. Karen and her family left the cabin immaculate. They went above and beyond with cleaning up, taking out the trash and starting the laundry. Could not ask for a better family to host. Hoping to have them visit again!! ❤️❤️
About the host
Hosted by Betsy Cook
I am a Virginia native, born and raised. However, I have spent most of my adult life in Vermont and later, Spain. I have a 9 year old daughter whom I adopted in Vermont. And I am married to a Spaniard, David (pronounced DaBeed...the V in European Spanish sounds like a B). I am a new host, only recently converting my mother's cabin into a short term rental. The cabin is a beautiful, deeply loved space that sheltered my mother for 35 years. She passed in February of 2024, and I inherited her home. It took many months to work through the loss and all of her treasures. With the help of friends and loved ones, we were able to set it up for guests. I love sharing this gorgeous retreat. It is a very special, sacred space. My lovely mother's energy is all around and I know she would be thrilled!
Why they chose this property
This area is super quiet and calm. There are many families, multiple generations who have lived and died and passed on to their children wonderful cabins by the Maury River. I am one of those lucky enough to inherit this property. What I love most about the space surrounding the cabin is the warmth and friendship of neighbors (many of them seasonal, others permanent residents) the nature and the wildlife, the stillness and serenity the cabin offers. It is truly a spiritual place...
What makes this property unique
The cabin was once a much smaller structure when my mother and stepfather bought it. That was just before the 1985 flood that wiped out houses and made McCurdy Lane unpassable. When my mother and her husband began renovating and expanding the cabin (all the work, custom wood by one local carpenter/craftsman), they used the washed up river rocks from the flood to construct the lovely stone fireplace that you can enjoy today. Both my mother and stepfather were Presbyterian ministers. They resided in the cabin together while they attended to many local churches and their congregations as interim pastors. He was 17 years older than my Mom. "Geep", Dr. GP Whiteley, died in 2008, 16 years before my mother passed. She lived alone in this cabin for all those years. A truly strong, independent woman with a brave heart and penchant for the natural surroundings, she was brave to be in the woods all that time by herself. She loved it! My mother was tough. A bear here and there, a snake here and there, she took it all in stride. She relished the deer in the early morning hours with their fawns, the birds, especially cardinals, always had her attention. Mom napped on the porch swing and occasionally slept there when the stars were blinking and the moon was bright. The hot tub was her favorite place to drink coffee in the early mornings. Mom spent hours and hours on the screened in porch, which came some years later after the chimney was built. She would read and meditate out there and in the afternoon, friends would stop by, or call, "Are you receiving??" they would ask. And happy hour would commence. Later, when my mother became too disabled to walk any distance, she bought a golf cart. Nancy was not about to let her physical limitations interfere with her social life. So, she would use her walker to get down the ramp, climb into the golf cart and go visit her friends up the road for "libations." Please enjoy the cabin as much as she did. Nancy would be honored to have you!
