About John Ehlen

After a sailing vacation my wife and I took in the southwest Florida coastal area, my brother and I decided it was time to find a place in southwest Florida. We looked from Fort Myers to Sarasota and fell in love with the laid back feel of Nokomis/Venice area and all it has to offer.

John Ehlen purchased this villa in 2011

Why John Ehlen chose Nokomis

We settled on our property because of it proximity to the beach and the inter-coastal waterway. The white sand beach is a great place to spend time. There are many great eateries just a short walk or drive away.

What makes this villa unique

Less than a mile away is Nokomis beach. The great family friendly atmosphere and white sand beach has easy access and parking. Kayak rentals and fishing charter services are nearby and offer great opportunities to enjoy what the innercoastal and gulf waters have to offer. Pelican Alley and Pop's Sunset Grill are within walking distance and Nokomos Sunset Hut and Briandi's are short ride. Also visit Captain Eddie's for dining in or check out their fresh seafood market and bring something home to enjoy on the grill.

Great place

  • 5 of 5

The property is not only as described, but better. Location is excellent--quite close to Nokomis beach along with Venice and the Laurel area, and South Sarasota can be reached in 20-30 minutes depending on traffic. Neighborhood is residential and nice. The property is a duplex with living room, two bedrooms, bath, kitchen, utility room (with washer/dryer) and garage, along with a small patio in back. The white picnic bench in the photos is in front and is located in nice shade in the afternoon/evening.

The two best features are all the extras found in the place and the owners. By extras, I mean plenty of towels, and a kitchen filled with everything from cooking gear to baggies and aluminium foil and spices. And the garage has a lot of sea toys too. Internet is cable and seemed stable--measured at about 22 Mbps down and 10 down via wireless.

The owners are very nice and communicative--emails and texting answered promptly. But more importantly, they are just nice people--awake and aware and a pleasure to meet. I hope to be back soon.

Owner's Response: Benoit is familar with the area, as he has close friends that live nearby. We know there are lots of choices on VRBO for our area, and were happy to have him choose our place for his stay. It was nice to see that he found our place comfortable and it was a pleasure to get to know him during his visit. Hosting on VRBO has become an enjoyable part of our lives and we look forward to hosting and meeting more great people along the way.

Wonderful Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Shore Acres while visiting family in the Venice beach area. The cottage was perfect and the owner was attentive to our needs. We were close to everything we needed stores, beach and other areas such as Sarasota. I found the cottage to be very clean and well stocked with all of our needs. I would recommend this cottage to anyone staying in the Nikomis area.

Sometimes pictures lie or are outdated and to be honest, it was one of the less expensive options and the pictures looked good enough so I took the gamble. But when I actually saw the place for myself, I was pleasantly surprised as the pictures don't do it justice! John and his wife and very friendly and helpful :) definitely recommend staying here!

Off the beaten path

Great location. Walk to beach and some great fun restaurants! Away from the tourists. Quiet clean accommodations. Close to some great side trips. Sanabel island. A manatee reserve. Siesta Key. It's perfect. Beach is beautiful. Close to canal. We rented a boat and had a fantastic time being in the water. It's all there. And the owners are charming and accommodating. I will definitely return!

Great Stay in a Great Location!

  • 5 of 5

We just came back from a surprisingly wonderful week in Nokomis! Not being familiar with this area before the trip, we were not sure what to expect. There were five of us who stayed in the unit and there was still plenty of room. Upon arrival, it was very clean and besides food, other essentials were provided, even laundry detergent! We used what was in the unit and left behind the few things that we bought as well throughout our stay. It was great!

The area was also fantastic! The beach is within walking distance and the Gulf is very clean and enjoyable for swimming. We also explored Venice, Sarasota (the Mote aquarium was a hit with my three daughters), Anna Maria Island and Sanibel Island (a little further drive) for day trips. While you would definitely not have to leave the area at all, we enjoyed exploring different places. We will definitely rent this unit again and return to the area as we did not get to do everything we wanted to in one week! One person on Sanibel also recommended Caspersen Beach (located nearby) as a great place to find prehistoric sharks' teeth!

It was a memorable stay and the owner was extremely helpful in communicating with us before we left, while we were there and after our return to make sure our trip went well. We will definitely be returning and highly recommend a stay here!

A short walk to the white sand beach or waterfront restaurants. A boat launch on the inter-coastal is less than a mile away. Only 4 miles to Venice Isle. Check out the farmers market in downtown Venice on Saturday. Siesta Key Beach and Sarasota are only 20 min. north.
