The owner, Margaret, lives in the upper level, and respects the guest's privacy; however is available to provide information, recommendations & places of interest on St. John when requested. Margaret is a business owner, resident of the island for over 30 years, and wants her guests to have an enjoyable and memorable stay on beautiful St. John.
On the Rocks is located in a small upscale residential neighborhood on the southshore of the island, approximately 10 minutes from the ferry dock and village of Cruz Bay.
On the Rocks is one of St. John's Best Kept Secrets.
Location, Location, Location!
Margaret and her late husband, Jim Labrenz, relocated to St. John from Ohio in 1977 and founded Cruz Bay Realty in 1985. They built the first house in Estate Fish Bay, appropriately called 'Goodbye Columbus.' Subsequently, they built two more homes in Fish Bay, then constructed their Klein Bay home, 'On the Rocks', where Margaret currently resides. Margaret is very active in community affairs, is the past president of the St. John Historical Society, charter member of the St. John Board of Realtors, St. John Singers, President of Klein Bay Homeowners Association and a member of Audubon Society and St. John AARP.
We could not have made a better choice for our trip to St. John. It was our first time to the Island and I was looking at accommodations based first on price then on reviews. On the Rocks seemed too good to be true, but far exceeded our expectations.
We were traveling with another couple, the set up at on the rocks is perfect for 2 couples as the rooms are on opposite ends of the property. The rooms are spacious and each have their own bathroom and shower.
The pool is warm and inviting and the views from the deck are incredible. Margaret tells you the snorkeling is good in Klein bay but it is one of the BEST locations on the island. We visited a new snorkel spot each day, but Klein bay was still the best, Salt Pond Bay was a close second followed by Waterlemon Cay.
The location of on the Rocks is great. Close enough to town but away from the noise.
It is fully equipped with everything you need. Coolers, chairs, towels, spices, condiments, plastic bags to pack lunches, snorkel gear, guide books, sun screen, bug spray and more! Check to see what is in the kitchen before grocery shopping.
I would absolutely return to On the Rocks!
This was our family's fourth year at "On The Rocks". We enjoy our visit more each year. The set up is truly perfect as our kids grow older and we love the Caribbean feel of the villa. Lots of beach colors and open air. The villa is perfectly equipped with snorkel gear, toiletries and any kitchen gear we could ever want or need. It is the perfect location on the island, blending accessibility and privacy. We take off early for the day and then return in the late afternoon to enjoy the sun deck before venturing back into town for evening activities. Margaret is perfection, suggesting restaurants or beaches or adventures when we have questions about how to spend another day in paradise. Can't wait to go back... Tan is fading and we miss it already!
We have vacationed at On The Rocks for almost twenty years. It is impossible to imagine staying anyplace besides this perfect hideaway nestled among coconut palms and colorful
bougainvillea with waves lapping the rocky shore. The patio overlooks beautiful Klein Bay, and is a perfect spot for morning coffee, lounging with a book or relaxing in the evening after island adventures. The hospitality cannot be warmer or more sincere from the on-site owner who is an expert in all things St. John. We feel more like welcomed friends than rental guests. St. John is a paradise for water sports, but you don't need to leave home to have a fabulous snorkeling experience right out your own door. We have collected lots of memories of swimming with turtles, rays, and all sizes and colors of tropical fish. We are thrilled every year with the abundance of humming birds and banana quits visiting the blooms which surround On The Rocks. We have enjoyed watching our favorite iguana perched at the top of a mango tree taking in the morning sun just as we are. The most relaxing spot imaginable, the most beautiful view, the loveliest hostess. We are already booked for two weeks in 2016, and just thinking about those two weeks renews my spirit.
Our family of four adults just returned from a wonderful two-week vacation at “On the Rocks.” As so many reviews have previously attested to, we could not have booked a more perfect property for our stay on St. John. We have traveled to the island several times and have stayed in both campgrounds and villas. I felt I was pretty well versed on available accommodations and rates, but I always enjoy browsing VRBO to see what’s available. I can honestly say that I won’t be searching anymore as “On the Rocks” was perfect for us in every way. Margaret was extremely helpful in booking the property as well as reserving our rental vehicle. When our arrival on the ferry was later than planned, she picked up our car for us so that we would have access to it immediately – which was a good thing as we had a lot of luggage! She gave us a nice orientation to the property, answered any questions and was always available during our stay if we needed anything. On the Rocks is in a beautiful location, very quiet with spectacular water views. We loved listening to the waves at night -that’s what I call true oceanfront! You can swim/snorkel right from the cobblestone beach which we did several times, but we also enjoyed the WARM freshwater pool, especially after spending a day at one of the MANY beautiful beaches on St John. The villa was bright, clean, well-stocked with sheets, towels, pots and pans (although we cooked very little) tons of books, snorkel gear in various sizes, coolers and beach chairs. Margaret had dozens of DVDs available so we often watched a movie in the evening. We truly had everything we needed and more! If you are not familiar with St. John, Klein Bay is just a short (and beautiful!) ride out of Cruz Bay. I would HIGHLY recommend this property to anyone considering a stay on St John and I wouldn’t waste time looking any further than “On the Rocks!”
We have rented many times through VRBO. On the Rocks is by far the best-stocked rental ever. As others have said, you do NOT need to bring anything but your clothes and some toiletries with you. Margaret was so easy to work with. She made arranging this rental a breeze. She even set up our jeep rental for us, met us at the ferry and gave us a quick orienting tour of Cruz Bay. She was so helpful, non-intrusive, warm and friendly. We enjoyed listening to her stories and suggestions. The kitchen is so well stocked-including plastic containers, many herbs and spices, plenty of pots and utensils. And, I highly recommend you check out what items are already there before you get anything from the grocery store. Margaret even had a nice basket of snack items for us. The bedding and towels are good--and there are PLENTY of towels. Lots of snorkel gear. Plenty of books. You name it, she's already got it. We enjoyed snorkeling right from the beach there-and saw plenty-including sting rays. The pool is such a nice extra. We had many dinners at the house-used the gas grill and ate out next to the pool. She has journals there with many years of remarks from many renters--so many come back year after year. It is a great location-if you want to be close enough to 'town' but also not 'surrounded' by crowds.
There are more luxurious villas on St. John, but none surpasses "On the Rocks" for homey relaxation in a tropical getaway, a view that is interesting and soothing, or Margaret's hospitality and extensive local knowledge. The amenities are more than adequate: a fully-equipped kitchen, two comfortable bedrooms and spacious bathrooms, a refreshing pool and deck just out the back doorway, and a view that rewards patient observation as the hours roll by. From sunrise to sunset to spectacularly starry nights, nature puts on a show. At your feet, Klein Bay is as fun to look at as it is to explore by snorkeling or clambering along its unusual beach covered with stones smoothed by the sea.
"On the Rocks' " location offers a break from nightlife (and, therefore, from unwanted noise) without forcing you to forego social life, but if you want the three-ring circus of a major resort and being waited on hand and foot, it's not for you. Instead, if you don't mind a modest overland drive to the shops on the way to and in Cruz Bay, the beaches on the north shore, or using the road over Gifft Hill that cuts across the island linking you with Coral Bay and the East End, "On the Rocks" is what the doctor ordered. In its own way, "On the Rocks" is centrally located and yet secluded; you can plan your vacation around an array of options. On any day, you can spend long days on any of the island's beaches, hike in the National Park, shop, sample nightlife and restaurant fare or hunker down to grill a home-cooked meal you can enjoy outdoors by candlelight. And, if you want to know more about St. John's history and up-to-date information about anything on the island, Margaret's your source.
The details listed in this property's description are spot-on and are to be relied upon. I'd not only recommend this property to a friend or a relative, I've brought several of them along over the years, all of whom enjoyed the experience. Here it is in a nutshell: the week we spend at "On the Rocks" is simply the best out of the fifty-two each year.
