Under new ownership (April 2014) and extensively remodeled and expanded in May-July 2014, Kataluma features many improvements and updates including an additional bedroom suite and a new beachfront infinity pool. Set on a powdery pink-sand beach overlooking the turquoise waters of the Atlantic, Kataluma is a grand 6-bedroom, 6½-bath beachfront estate on Double Bay. This new and secluded 5000 sf home has two levels of living space. The upper floor features a vast open-plan great room with 20 feet of sliding glass doors for stunning beach and ocean views. At night, this room becomes a home theater with surround-sound, CD/DVD player, and 10’ movie screen with film library. The lower floor of Kataluma features a second family room, a recreation room with 8-foot slate pool table and flat-screen satellite TV.
Outside, luxuriate in our new oceanfront heated infinity pool, or in our backyard pool on the west side of the house. Lounge in our shady beachside tiki hut. Explore our offshore islands and reefs with our kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, and snorkel gear, or explore the land on our beach bikes. Kataluma has excellent snorkeling on the beautiful coral reefs right off the beach in front of the house. Grill and enjoy your day's catch on a variety of oceanfront and poolside patios and decks.
The upper level of Kataluma has four bedroom suites (2 king and 2 queen beds). Each has its own name and design theme (Hibiscus, Gecko, Lotus, Frangipani) hand-carved on the wooden transom over the door. The doors are recessed into hallways to give private entry off the main living areas. Each bedroom has its own private bath, each with a unique design and style.
The lower level of Kataluma features a new downstairs master suite with a king bed and private bathroom. The second downstairs bedroom is a bunk room that sleeps up to 8 and has a dedicated bathroom. It is furnished with a full-on-full bunk bed and two standard-width bunk bed sets.
The lower level of Kataluma also features a second living room with a 42” flat screen TV with satellite service, and a game room with professional slate pool table with pub table, pub stools and spectator chairs for pool playing enthusiasts.
Kataluma’s gourmet kitchen will satisfy the most demanding chef. A 15-foot center island gives plenty of space for preparing your in-home meals. Or have our cook do it for you!

Kataluma is an absolutely gorgeous home with amazing views of the crystal blue waters of the Atlantic and it's pink sand beaches. Our family was looking for a private & relaxing vacation, and this home exceeded our expectations. We were hard pressed to leave our own little piece of paradise to explore the island, as we stayed at home most of the time. We did drive down to Rock Sound, which has better grocery selections, and even better prices, including alcohol. A rental car is a must. We drove over to the Caribbean side of the island a few times, and were not disappointed. The views & the water were breathtaking. We dined at Tippy's restaurant once, and would not return. We felt it was more of a tourist trap, the food was mediocre, and prices were high. Mate & Jenny's is just down the road, the atmosphere was more welcoming, and the pizza was delicious. We hired a chef, Manasseh, to cook for us at the house. His prices & food were above the rest, better than any restaurant we found. His conch fritters are to die for! Hiring him was the best decision we made about our meals. The island is quiet & quaint, and the islanders are very friendly. We would love to visit Eleuthera again, and we certainly would love to rent Kataluma again! Don't think we could've had a better week of relaxation, weather, and most importantly, spending time with each other making memories. Special thanks to the owners for sharing their beautiful home with us & to Matt for helping us decide on a home that was perfect for our families.
We held a retreat for nine executives and Kataluma was the perfect setting. The house was beautiful, well appointed, and situated in a picturesque Caribbean backdrop. There was plenty of space for us to meet as a large group but at the same time, had places where we could breakout and visit in smaller groups. The location is right on the beach which allowed for contemplative walks on a virtually private beach. Because it's very private, we were able to really focus on our agenda, but could easily drive into town to blow off some steam and have some fun. We left the retreat having achieved our objective and feeling completely refreshed.
A big plus for the group was the many activities that we could engage in and never get bored - kayaking, snorkeling, swimming in the pool, fishing, and jogging to name a few.
We had the pleasure of staying at Kataluma for a week with our crew that consisted of two families including four adults and six children (ages 10-19). Kataluma is very well laid out with ample space for two families and everything you need to enjoy your vacation in Eleuthera. The property management team was fantastic, very helpful and full of recommendations for dining, day trips, etc.
The house came with all the amenities you need especially in the kitchen, as well as outdoor gear including snorkeling, paddle boards, kayaks and beach towels. There was plenty of room for everyone to spread out with the adults and older kids using the upstairs bedrooms and younger ones enjoying the downstairs bunkroom (plenty of room to spare!).
The house is located on the Atlantic side with plenty of private beach to enjoy as far as you care to venture up and down the beach. We essentially had the beach to ourselves with the occasional spotting of other people on the beach. That said, we probably spent most of our outdoor time at the ocean side pool where inevitably you could find several adults reading books or dozing off to the ocean breeze and waves crashing in the background.
Katlaluma was exactly what our crew was seeking after spending too many previous beach vacations at overpriced hotels with crowded pools and beaches. It was a very relaxing vacation with a good balance between hanging out at Kataluma and enjoying activities out and about on the island.
Recommendations for guests:
1. Rental Car - is a must to get around the island and see everything it has to offer.
2. Dining – 1648 (more of a resort style) and Tippy’s (probably best local) for dinner.
3. Fishing – Charter a boat in morning for ½ day at Cotton Bay to catch dorado, barracuda and shark. We spotted several whales as well. Definitely worth the drive as well as enjoying a cold beverage and lunch afterwards at Cape Eleuthra Resort and Marina.
4. Chefs – we had chefs prepare 3 dinners at the house which was well worth it.
5. Food and Wine – you can bring up to 2 bottle of wine per adult onto the island. We also checked a small cooler w/ frozen ice packs and steaks/tenderloins to grill one night. The gas grill out back is wonderful and heats up quickly.
6. Provision service – order groceries and spirits and have them delivered to the house (property management team can help arrange). The groceries were primarily for breakfast/lunch due to dining out and having chef prepared dinners.
Our whole family had a wonderful time at Kataluma and thought the house was gorgeous. The setting and the beauty of the ocean were amazing and much appreciated by all of us Midwesterners. The kitchen had all the utensils you would need and the house was well equipped with kayaks, floaties for the pool, bicycles and life jackets. The beach was great for shelling and wading. While we were there, the wind was quite strong, which made kayaking difficult. Our one disappointment was that the pool heater went out while we were there, but has since been replaced, so should be in good shape for future use. The children loved watching movies on the big screen every evening and enjoyed rediscovering some of the old Star Trek and adventure movies. The pool table was also a big hit and provided evening entertainment for many. We had Manasseh Cartwright come to cook for us twice. We really enjoyed the food and the lively conversation with him, Eva and Sammy.
We took a couple of trips to explore the island. We spent some time at Ten Bay Beach on the Caribbean side of the island, which was beautiful and more conducive for wading than the Atlantic side. Some in our group took a Fishbone tour and enjoyed snorkeling and even saw a couple of dolphins that the boat followed for awhile. Others drove to the lighthouse beach, which was an experience to say the least. It was gorgeous when we got there, but the road there was quite a challenge. A trip to the Ocean Hole and the Boiling Cave were fun for the children, too. We sampled some of the local restaurants, which were all enjoyable. (Tippy's, The Buccaneer, Bouganvillea, Mate and Jenny's Pizza)
It was a lovely family vacation. Everyone we met was friendly and helpful, especially all of the people involved with the rental - Matt, Anne, Martin, Violet, Eva. We thank you all for a vacation we will remember for a long time to come.
Kataluma is well-appointed and has everything one would need for a perfect, relaxing vacation. Comfy beds, clean, very nice bathrooms throughout. Both pools very clean and clear. Kitchen well-equipped, even with a Crock-Pot. The beach is accessible with some wooden steps that lead from the tiki hut area out back but be careful as there are no hand rails. The house has a beautiful view of the Atlantic side of Eleuthera. Be aware, though, that the Atlantic side is somewhat rough water and often high winds. The Caribbean on the other side of the island is calmer and very beautiful, and a short drive. Kataluma has a pool table, games, DVDs, Direct TV, and plenty to keep a person occupied if they want to come inside to get away from the No-see-um bugs (which show up when the wind is calm). While Kataluma is a wonderful getaway in itself, the eight of us (ranging in ages of 44 - 70) did not particularly enjoy the island. If you are looking for privacy and a remote location, however, this is for you. We found that SCUBA diving was difficult as there were not very many reputable dive shops and those that did call us back wanted to charge us extra for us bringing our own gear and not using theirs! In addition, we would highly recommend using a provision service to have your groceries and spirits delivered to the house. Rental cars on the island are shaky at best and you definitely need one to get around as nothing is within walking or bicycling distance. The owners leave bicycles, kayaks, snorkel gear, and flotation devices for guests and those are very helpful to pass the time. Again, the home itself is a dream, but beware...if you are expecting a vacation with lots of adventures and excursions, Eleuthera is probably not for you. 5 stars for the house itself, probably 3 stars for the island. If you want a wonderful dinner meal, try "1648" or "Tippys". Lots of small hole-in-the-wall establishments along the roads, perfect for a quick rum punch but not sure the food would be good. Stick to the more "reviewed" restaurants for good food and service. This house is a good hour drive from the North Eleuthera Airport, which is where most commercial flights arrive and depart so keep that in mind when looking at the location. Taxi service is either non-existent to this location or so extremely priced that you must get a rental car to get around, even to the local stores. The housekeepers, gardener, and property manager were all great people.
Awesome! The house was beautiful and the beaches are magnificent. Our group ranged in age from 10-75 and everybody had a blast. Everyone involved from the planning (Matt and Tara) to arrival (Anne) were wonderful.
The only negative was that Diet Coke was hard to find on the island!
Our vacation at katalumahouse was fantastic! We were two families traveling together with 3 children ages 11, 15 & 15. The house was perfect for everyone. The downstairs area was a great hangout for the kids! The boys loved the pool table. We were there for 10 days and the tv never really got used but it was a great space for them to retreat to. The kitchen area perfect also! Loved the huge table where all of us were able to dine together! It was great also for playing board games! (The house had some and we brought our favorites). The kitchen was very well equipped with all utensils, appiances etc. we cooked all but three meals so it was a great space for us! We also loved gathering around the theater movie screen at night! It was perfect family time! The house has a lot of movies but we would also bring our family favorites next time! (We would definitely go back). All bedrooms & bathrooms were great spaces and clean. Finally....the outdoor decks and pools were BEAUTIFUL! We only used the back pool once and we spent a little time on the back decks on windy days but the Oceanside pool was the real winner! Sitting on the deck or in the pool looking at the ocean gives a true sense of peace. It is gorgeous beyond words. The house had a lot of tubes for floating which was great! We brought our own just in case but never needed to blow them up! We spent days also traveling the island discovering lots of beautiful beaches and great snorkeling. The staff at the house was great! Anne, the house manager, the pool man & cleaning staff were all friendly and helpful! Finally Matt & Tara at Eleuthera vacation were a great help and their follow up with us through all aspects of the trip were fantastic! We highly recommend the island of Eleuthera, katalumahouse & Eleuthera vacations! Thanks for a family vacation of a lifetime!
