About Barry Donovan

The Kickapoo Valley has a special place in our hearts as we grew up here and came back to raise our family in this beautiful area. We have three grown boys who love to visit and enjoy the Kickapoo Valley and all it has to offer. We love to share this unique property with family and friends and welcome you to join us too.

Barry Donovan purchased this cabin in 2006

Why Barry Donovan chose La Farge

We purchased this piece of land several years ago from friends and neighbors, and built the cabin bit by bit over the years with the help of many friends, family, and local craftsmen. We enjoy it's beauty and want to share it with you!

What makes this cabin unique

This setting is like no other. We have a top quality trout stream steps from the front door. Abundant wildlife in every season. The views are gorgeous all around. There is nothing more relaxing than sitting on the porch, watching the wildlife, hearing the sounds of Bear Creek trickling by, enjoying a fire in the fire pit after dark, and just relaxing.

A Wee-Bit of Heaven in the Driftless Area...

  • 5 of 5

The cabin is clean and well laid out. A nice outdoor seating area and firepit complete the property.

My wife and I took our two young boys on a 'technology free' weekend. The boys explored the land along the creek and walked into the woods...they felt safe with their 'bb guns'. There's enough grass area to play a good game of catch with a football. The back seating area overlooks a creek, barn, farm field and near-by hills. The hills held mist in the mornings.

The setting is world class, serene and humbling. Hard to believe that there's an area like the Kickapoo River Valley and the Driftless Area - that so few folks know about.

Barry greeted us shortly after our arrival to make sure we knew where everything was...and gave us some tips on local things to do and see..

A wonderful experience...

Phenomenal setting for enjoying the outdoors and all the comforts of home!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and outdoors fanatic son loved staying right on Bear Creek with our dogs, fishing, walking the property, enjoying a lovely view without neighbors in site. Kayaking the Kickapoo River made the trip as well as touring the Driftless region. Barry, owner, was great, friendly and accommodating! Hope to come back again😊

Wonderful host and cabin!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at this quiet cabin. It is comfortably furnished with new furniture and everything you need in the kitchen, including coffee, which was nice since we got in late and did not have time to pick up groceries. Nice bathroom with tiled shower, and an outdoor shower for post canoeing or for the dog! The bubbling stream is lovely and the mown path along it was great for taking walks and for fishing. There is a nice fire pit with adirondack chairs around it, and even plenty of firewood to use! Barry, our host, was super responsive and obviously takes great pride in his property. He even stopped by to see if we needed anything. Would highly recommend for a nice getaway!

Our wonderful experience at Bear Creek Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Picture the rolling hills and lush valleys of southwestern Wisconsin, one valley in particular with a clear, flowing creek, Bear Creek, at times meandering, at times rushing through it. In this setting is Bear Creek Retreat and a very spacious, yet cozy cabin completely outfitted for both indoor and outdoor relaxation. We spent four wonderful days in this setting with our four dogs, two Irish Wolfhounds and two wire-haired dachshunds. The Retreat is crisscrossed with well maintained walking paths along the creek and through the woods that surround the cabin. The dogs were in heaven. The Wolfhounds especially liked jumping in the creek wading and splashing about. In the evenings we prepared great meals in the fully equipped kitchen and later joined the dogs relaxing and recovering from all the day's activities. This was a wonderful experience that we highly recommend and, hopefully, we will experience again sometime in the future.

Long-Awaited Childhood Friends Retreat

  • 5 of 5

I had the pleasure of meeting 3 great friends at this cabin where we planned to relax and reminisce for a couple of days. Located in the gorgeous southwest part of the state with its lush green, rolling farm fields and classic barns and silos, even the drive to the property was pleasant. Barry met us upon arrival and was very friendly and helpful. I thought the cabin was even prettier than the pictures depicted and the property was absolutely stunning! The cabin was super clean and nicely decorated in the rustic theme. The sleeping accommodations were awesome, lots of roomy rooms and comfortable beds to choose from. Whether we were relaxing on the patio chairs listening to the creek flow over the rocks, chilling around a fire in the fire pit under the stars or taking long walks around the grounds, we knew we were in the perfect spot for our friend getaway. I would recommend this property to anyone!
