About Sherman and Joy Schlichting

Sherman is a carpenter by trade and usually builds using modern conventional methods. But he and Joy especially like saving old homes. So when they were able to purchase the home from a family member they began the restoration project. Sherman and Joy grew up in the community surrounding the area and even though they are not able to make their living from the farm, they wanted to keep the property in the family. Having vacation rentals gives them a way to do that. They opened their first vacation rental in 2000 and have since then completed 3 more. Joy just retired from 30 years working as a teacher and counselor in the public schools. So now she can devote more time to the vacation rentals. Their latest project is restoring a house built before Abraham Lincoln was president! It has been moved beside Joy's Country Cabin and will hopefully be completed within the next year. It is definitely a labor of love, bringing a house back to life.

Sherman and Joy Schlichting purchased this house in 1998

Why Sherman and Joy Schlichting chose Texas

Sherman and Joy have a real appreciation for old homes. It saddens them when they are not cared for. Their first vacation rental on the same property as The Farmhouse is The Cabin which is a restored log cabin. . They have a charm that is hard to beat. And they are part of our history. The log cabin which is now the living room of Joy's Country Cabin was built by German immigrants who came to the area in the mid 19th century. At that time there were no lumber yards or even lumber mills. There was not a hardware store around where you could buy nails. So the early settlers built with what they found in the area. In the case of this house, it was elm trees. Sherman and Joy have a real appreciation for the work that went into building these early structures and want to see them preserved. Having vacation rentals allows us to save some of these wonderful old homes and share them with others.

What makes this house unique

The property where The Farmhouse is located has always been special to Sherman and Joy, especially Joy, since it has been in her family for several generations. The area on the southern edge of the Texas Hill Country is some of the most beautiful and productive in Texas. The soil is black and rich which means the grass, trees and crops grow lush. Cattle and horses graze on the grasslands surrounding the house. In the Spring, Texas wildflowers bless the countryside. And at all times of the year, wildlife come to the pond which can be seen from the porch. Many, many guests from all over the world come back to The Farmhouse time after time just to be able to sit on that porch.

And of course there is Gruene Hall - the oldest dance hall in continuous operation in Texas. Here you can enjoy well-known and up and coming country bands and singers. Another small town worth checking out is Wimberly. From The Farmhouse you can take a scenic drive through the Hill Country to this wonderful little place built on the banks of the Blanco River. And if you have a son or daughter attending Texas State University in San Marcos or Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, our house, located just 10 minutes from either town, can provide the perfect place for the family to gather for the weekend. What sets our house apart from many others is that at the end of the day, after sightseeing, shopping or floating the river, you can escape to the peaceful quiet of our country home. For many of our guests the front porch is the favorite spot. From the porch swing you have a view of a pond which is visited by birds and other Texas wildlife. And we are far enough from the lights of the city that on a clear night you can see the stars. So come visit us and experience for yourself.

Tranquil and convenient!!

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed in Joy's Cabin while in TX to attend graduation at Texas State. This cabin was conveniently located but yet secluded and peaceful! Love the cows! The beds and numerous pillows were comfortable and cozy! The bathroom had an ample supply of towels -- always a plus. The porch swing, porch and morning view to the east were most enjoyable. The kitchen was well stocked and the dining room spacious and pleasant. This cabin exceeded our expectations and provided us with a wonderful opportunity to spend time with family. Thank you, Joy and Sherman -- your cabin is a treasure -- it exudes warmth and charm.

Stayed here for the weekend while floating the river in San Marcos with friends. Was exactly what I was looking for, perfect secluded feeling getaway with close proximity to town when needed. Great views from the hilltop and PLENTY of room in the farmhouse. Sherman and Joy were very kind, friendly and accomodating, and everything couldnt have been more perfect!!Would definitely recommend to others and stay here again.
