Overview

About the property

2 BR/1 BA + 500 sq. ft. Screened Outdoor Living Area

**NOTE***PLEASE CONSIDER OUR LOCATION IN THE FOLLOWING DESCRIPTION IN RELATION TO HILO AND THE CURRENT LAVA FLOW***

** REGARDING THE CURRENT ERUPTION OF KILAUEA-

**DUE TO THE CONFUSION OF WHERE AND HOW THIS EVENT IS EFFECTING THE SURROUNDING AREA AND THE COQUI COTTAGE ON THE LOCATION MAP, WE ARE ASKING IF YOU HAVE ANY CONCERNS OF OUR LOCATION, PLEASE LET US KNOW.***

We are located about 20 minutes from downtown Hilo, toward the town of Keaau and Pahoa, however, WE ARE NOT impacted by this event, and we are not located on the East Rift Zone. The volcanic activity is isolated to Lower Puna, and Fissure 8 is located about 13 miles to the southeast and below us, which the lava flow continues from there downslope to the ocean.

We have never had any evacuations, warnings, and are several miles outside of any of these areas. We have not had ANY air quality issues, as the air is much better than the air quality of most cities on the mainland, which can be confirmed with air quality meters located throughout the island.

If you have any questions about our property or location to this activity, feel free to contact us. We are keeping our guests updated on our Coqui Cottage page with current information links.

**SOME OF OUR FAVORITE THINGS TO SEE OR DO & DISTANCE FROM THE COTTAGE:

**Depending on current activity- THE ACTIVE FLOW** - Currently, you are able to see the night sky lighted by the beautiful orange glow, that is amazing in itself. But, there is also places driving from the cottage toward Pahoa and throughout the town that Fissure 8 is visible, and even though it's several miles safely away, you are able to see the lava flowing out of the fissure that has developed into a sort of cone that is over 170 ft. tall. The Civil Defense and State are working on a way to allow lava viewing safely, without jeapordizing the private property of ones in the affected areas. But, there are Lava Boat tours currently available.

This is an exciting place, and the only place in the U.S. that you can get this close to active lava creating more land and expanding the island.

**VOLCANO NATIONAL PARK- (Currently closed as of May 10th- we will keep you updated)

Whale Watching- (Seasonal) see the Humpback Whales migrating Dec-Mar. right from the shore- (10 mins)

Relax and take a Beautiful scenic drive through the lush green side and stop at one of the many magnificent waterfalls.

Rainbow Falls- (15-20 mins)

Akaka Falls and Nature walk- (25 mins)

Botanical Gardens (along the 4 mile scenic drive route)- (20 mins)

Kaumana Caves Lava Tube- Explore a huge lava tube in their natural state, and see the amazing way the island was formed, entrance is free. (20 mins)

Mauna Kea- Watch the sunset or sunrise and see what the island looks like from above the clouds at 10,000 ft. elevation and for those who love the stars there’s World Class Star Gazing with Narrated free tours, as the different planets rise. (1 hr drive)

Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Factory and Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo- It's the ONLY natural tropical rainforest zoo in the U.S. and it's free! AND it’s is less than 10 minutes away.

Visit Black Sand Beaches almost guaranteed to see Turtles sun bathing...and there's so much more!

We are here to help you plan more than just your accommodations, we love to share any advice you need. We want you to be able to just relax and decide how you will enjoy this wonderful place!

About Shauna Knutsen

We would like to introduce ourselves to you, our guests. We are John and Shauna Knutsen, we have two children Cindy and Zane, and our nephew Javin and he's the only one still at home.

We fell in love with Hawaii when we got married on Kauai, and have been coming back every since. There is no other place to us like Hawaii, its not just the beauty you see with your eyes, its the beauty of the humble people, the culture and the slowed down island time feel that allows you to truly relax and take the time to enjoy creation.

We love to bring our family and friends to enjoy this wonderful place, and even though all of Hawaii has so much to offer we decided on the Big Island- since it is so large and there is so much variety and so many climates- What other island can you be in a rain forest, an arid desert, an active volcano, on top of the tallest mountain from the sea floor (snow covered in winter), all on the SAME DAY! And even though all the islands are beautiful we feel that this island has some of the Best of the Best right here!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Making this charming place available for world weary travelers was a kind and generous thing to do! Thank you for the clean sheets, nice towels, the complete instruction tips on what and where. You will find everything needed here and the best coffee beans this side of anywhere!

The cottage caretaker (Rich) has a good natured presence. I've told all my friends about you and Coqui Cottage. Don't be surprised if some of them beats a path to your door!

Great house—owners go above and beyond!

  • 5 of 5

Coqui cottage was a spacious, clean and charming house with an amazing screened in porch. Shauna went above and beyond with communication—letting us know as soon as it was ready for us to check in; offering extra inside info on what the area has to offer; and info about the volcano, including where to see the glow best. We only had one night and she was super fast getting back to me with any questions and tips. The kitchen was well stocked with cooking supplies and had a lot of nice little extra goodies like kona coffee and cookies. There was also a telescope set up on the screen porch if you happen to get a clear night (if not you get a beautiful lava glow from the porch). Kaleo’s in Pahoa was great. So was the Hilo farmer’s market. And the drive north up the coast and it’s waterfalls were amazing. So happy with the place and our stay!

Absolutely perfect!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was perfect for my wife and I’s first stay on the island! The location is about 15-20 minutes south of Hilo but close enough to a highway that making a trip into Hilo easy to do. The house has every possible ammenity that you could need! Oven, dishwasher, fridge, washer/dryer and more than enough pots, pans, and plates! Beach chairs, two coolers, and a assortment of other beach items were readily available. There is no AC but the nights were always cool and we never missed not having AC. The coqui frogs were present but I found them relaxing to listen to every night. There is no traffic on the street so you can easily relax to the sounds of the frogs. I would absolutely stay here again if I find myself back on the Big Island!

Enjoyable

  • 5 of 5

House exceeded our expectations. Even though there is no a/c, the house was comfortable at nights with fans operating and windows open. Owners graciously provided all the recreational and household goods necessary to make the stay comfortable. We even enjoyed the chorus of frogs and calls of the chickens, with responses from their friends up the mountain. Our main purpose for staying at this unit was to hike Kilauea, but with the park closed we used information from the owners to readjust our activities. The book of day trips and labeling of house fixtures made the stay much easier. We have been staying at VRBOs for over a decade and this unit was one of our favorites. The owners should be proud of the home, the grounds, and their efforts to provide information to their renters. Thank you.

Great Location for Volcano National Park

  • 4 of 5

The house was clean and easily accommodated our family of 5. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is for sleeping. With no AC, you need to keep the windows open to catch the cool breeze. We heard the tree frogs chirping until the early hours of the morning and then the rooster at the crack of dawn. Then location was great and the owner was super friendly.
