**SOME OF OUR FAVORITE THINGS TO SEE OR DO & DISTANCE FROM THE COTTAGE:
**Depending on current activity- THE ACTIVE FLOW** - Only a 15-20 minute drive is the starting point to the active lava flow, located near the town of Kalapana. It's the only place in the U.S. that you can get this close to active lava spilling into the ocean creating more land and expanding our island.
**VOLCANO NATIONAL PARK- Explore the many miles of hiking trails, lava tubes, Visitor Center, Guided Nature walks with park ranger, Museum. 30 mins to the park entrance, but the active flow viewing is about an hour from the park entrance, and only 20 mins from us.
**Kopoho Tide Pools and Wai’opae Marine Sanctuary- Some of the best snorkeling on the east side with huge pools filled with coral and amazing fish. (25 mins)
**Ahalanui Park and Warm Ponds- Experience a naturally heated thermal pond with water up to 90 degrees depending on the tide, free of charge. Located just down the street from the Kopoho tidepools. (25 mins)
Whale Watching- (Seasonal) see the Humpback Whales migrating Dec-Mar. right from the shore- (10 mins)
Relax and take a Beautiful scenic drive through the lush green side and stop at one of the many magnificent waterfalls.
Rainbow Falls- (15-20 mins)
Akaka Falls and Nature walk- (25 mins)
Botanical Gardens (along the 4 mile scenic drive route)- (20 mins)
Kaumana Caves Lava Tube- Explore a huge lava tube in their natural state, and see the amazing way the island was formed, entrance is free. (20 mins)
Mauna Kea- Watch the sunset or sunrise and see what the island looks like from above the clouds at 10,000 ft. elevation and for those who love the stars there’s World Class Star Gazing with Narrated free tours, as the different planets rise. (1 hr drive)
Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Factory and Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo- It's the ONLY natural tropical rainforest zoo in the U.S. and it's free! AND it’s is less than 10 minutes away.
Visit Black Sand Beaches almost guaranteed to see Turtles sun bathing...and there's so much more!
We are here to help you plan more than just your accommodations, we love to share any advice you need. We want you to be able to just relax and decide how you will enjoy this wonderful place!

About Shauna Knutsen
We would like to introduce ourselves to you, our guests. We are John and Shauna Knutsen, we have two children Cindy and Zane, and our nephew Javin and he's the only one still at home. We fell in love with Hawaii when we got married on Kauai, and have been coming back every since. There is no other place to us like Hawaii, its not just the beauty you see with your eyes, its the beauty of the humble people, the culture and the slowed down island time feel that allows you to truly relax and take the time to enjoy creation. We love to bring our family and friends to enjoy this wonderful place, and even though all of Hawaii has so much to offer we decided on the Big Island- since it is so large and there is so much variety and so many climates- What other island can you be in a rain forest, an arid desert, an active volcano, on top of the tallest mountain from the sea floor (snow covered in winter), all on the SAME DAY! And even though all the islands are beautiful we feel that this island has some of the Best of the Best right here!

Everything you need in a setting accessible to all the area has to offer!
We were very happy to find this extremely clean, well-organized, comfortable place to explore the east side of the island. Everything on the island is not that far, mileage-wise, so would actually choose to spend more time here in future as it was such a comfortable place to stay. It is spacious, the beds comfortable, plenty of closet space, a well-equipped kitchen, laundry, and new appliances. Easy access to Hilo, the airport, Volcano National Park, and the beautiful waterfalls outside of Hilo, yet in a quiet space with lovely landscaping. Shauna was also right on top of things, offering individualized advice and responses to any questions before, during, and after our stay. Can't recommend this enough, just in that respect of an owner who was so available and so invested in us having a wonderful experience. We packed a lot in during our time there, and the assistance in the form of onsite books with tips, equipment for your use (coolers, snorkeling equipment, etc.) aided greatly. Mahalo Shauna & John! All of your efforts are much appreciated!!
This home away from home was above and beyond my expectations.
Coqui Cottage was amazing. It was well equipped with everything that we needed for our stay. They had everything from snorkel gear, boogie boards, umbrellas, flashlights, coolers, and more for our day excursions out to the parks. Although we didn't use them, it was nice to know that they were there. The beds and sofa were comfortable and the kitchen was nice to prep/cook meals. Everything from booking to checking in and checking out was well organized and detailed. Although it was on the outskirts of the town of Hilo, it was accessible on the highway. What I loved about the location was how close it was to the Volcano National Park and you truly felt like you were living like a local. Shauna was amazing and was like our personal concierge. She gave tons of tips and advice before our visit and was super helpful. This was probably the best home rental I have ever been to. Thank you for everything.
so clean, everything you could possibly need, wonderful beds. check in and check out a breeze. highly recommend when visiting the Hilo side of the island!
Felt like home
What a wonderful cottage! Clean and neat. Shauna thought of everything I might need for my stay.
All the amenities were there.
I want to thank Shauna for all the special effort she put in for my special needs--she is so accommodating and sweet, and thoughtful.
I may just come back!
We really enjoyed having you as our guests, and we were happy to make any accommodations we could, so you could have a place as close to home as possible! Thank you for all your thoughtfulness as well...we really appreciated the pictures of the updates in the area, I will be sure to send you a picture of the end results!
We hope that you do return someday, maybe for another special anniversary! It was great to have you and your wife with us!
We wish you all the best!
Nice, quiet and well furnished

Coqui Cottage Stay
My husband and I stayed at the Coqui Cottage Feb 6-14, 2018. This was one of the most thoroughly equipped VRBOs we've stayed at. Everything you could possibly need was available: flashlights, umbrellas, snorkeling equipment, beach towels, boogie boards, noodles, washer and dryer, first aid supplies, hair dryer, bottled water, cooler, and more. The light and fan switches were all labeled. And, best of all, there was a binder of day trips listing activities in different areas, directions on how to get there, and what you need to take with you!! We seemed to be centrally located for alot of activities. The cottage was decorated nicely, was comfy and very clean (a deal breaker for me). I can't recommend this place enough. The only thing I might recommend adding is a couple of beach chairs. Thank you Shauna!
Hawaii Volcanos National Park, Lava Viewing, Lava Tree State Park, Waterfalls, Natural Warm/Hot Ponds, Botanical Gardens, Rain Forest and Zoo, Telescope Star-Gazing Mauna Kea (best star gazing in the world), Snorkeling at Tide Pools, Black Sand Beaches, Hiking Lava Tubes and through Craters, Farmers Markets, Stroll through Old Historic Hilo Town, Museums, Japanese Gardens, Zip Lining over waterfalls, Helicopter Tours over Volcano, Nature Walks, Caverns, and so much more!
