About this property
Mountain Lake Chalet
Welcome to our 4-season vacation getaway on Whetstone Pond in Piscataquis County, Abbot, Maine. We offer the best of both worlds - all the amenities of modern living surrounded by the natural beauty of central Maine.
This isn't roughing it, that's for sure - streaming flat-screen TV, wifi internet, fully-equipped kitchen (microwave, refrigerator, dishwasher, ...), clothes washer and dryer, heat pump a/c and heating, standby generator, beautiful Whetstone Pond just a few feet from the front door with glorious views of the water and surrounding mountains from two 2nd floor balconies and the deck - you can recharge your batteries quite nicely without ever leaving the property.
But if you're feeling adventurous and enjoy the outdoor life, there's no shortage of possibilities - hiking, fishing, whitewater rafting, ATV trails and, in the winter, snowmobile trails and cross-country skiing. One of our favorite outdoor activities is accessible from our front deck - a nightly show of stars and the Milky Way the likes of which you probably don't see from home. If you own a telescope or even a pair of binoculars, you'll be glad if you packed them along.
For the slightly less adventurous, there are small towns within easy driving distance that offer a variety of restaurants, gift shops, craft shops, museums and, along the way, plenty of yard sales with that local Maine flavor. There's also the monthly dance at the Finnish Dance Hall - come early for the half hour dance instruction and then hit the floorboards to the sounds of a live band and an experience you'll be telling your friends back home about.
This is just a taste what is available to you. Don't hesitate to contact us for more information or for any other reason.

The view of the pond was beautiful, and the fireplace was great. We were there to celebrate Christmas with family that live nearby, and the house was perfect.
Loved the mountain lake chalet stay! So relaxing and beautiful! Enjoyed kayaking around the pond and a fire in the fireplace on cool evenings. The leaves turned a lot the week we were there. Gorgeous!
We had a wonderful stay at this home. The lake setting is amazing, and though the home itself is a bit dated, it was definitely adequate for our needs. Although the description of the house was accurate, the need to bring our own sheets and towels is different from any other home we've ever rented and used up valuable cargo space. The home could have been cleaner, and boat launches disturbed the tranquility of sitting on the deck a bit, but we would definitely recommend staying here and would stay again.
We booked for a couple early-January nights and found the A-frame to be a wonderful accommodation. The snow scenery was beautiful and the mix of propane heat and wood stove kept us plenty warm.
Very cute A-Frame right on Whetstone pond. Enjoyed our 3 days very much even though the weather wasn't great it didn't matter, the view, the home, the peace & quite and hearing the loons made it well worth the weather. We will definitely be going back.
Accessibility and amenities were great. A lot of access to nearby ATV trails and enough parking space for a large pick up and trailers.
Loved that you had direct access to the lake and kayak and our pup was comfortable and happy !
Beautiful location and cozy, well-maintained house. Had everything we needed for a relaxing weekend. Loved the balcony, deck and the amazing view. Right on the water!
It was nice and quiet and we could hear the loons on the lake all night long. Our pomeranian Cricket quite enjoyed doing a full perimeter around the cabin.
We had an amazing Thanksgiving here in 2024. We cooked, ate and relaxed. This place is so cozy and accommodating to families as there is space to be together and private space. Our 2 new kittens joined us and they loved it too! Thank you!
Absolutely perfect, beautiful views and it was a beautiful home. The pond was perfect and you could see to the bottom! Great value for the view! The owner communicates with you and is easy to get ahold of, we will definitely be back. Highly recommend this property!
This was our first VRBO experience and we'll probably never go back to hotels again. This property was so peaceful and so nice we will definately be back again! 7 stars all the way !!!
Our stay was exactly what we were looking for. The view from the back porch is amazing. The stars is something you will never forget. If your looking for a quiet, relaxing, beautiful place, this is it!!
This was a great relax in a fairy tale house!
Any weather and season are gorgeous here, as well as the mountains, forests and lakes!
Thanks so much for the mood and beauty to be remembered.
My family and I just stayed here for a week and had the best experience! We’ve stayed here before, but it was in April and cold and we wanted to come back when it was summer! We love the location and the property is beautiful. They had a new stove installed while we were there and it worked great! I highly recommend this place for a nice getaway vacation!!
The A frame is cute. Entry was easily accessible. Stairs to second floor a little tricky, light was out for the stairs. It was very hot on the time we were there. Upstairs was to hot to sleep in. We slept downstairs on futons. Downstairs curtain rod needs to be replaced. Rod fell apart & curtains hard to move.Loved the out the door into the pond. Neighbors are close. All in all a nice stay.

We will be installing a mini-split HVAC system in the Spring of 2026 which will provide air conditioning in the Summer and additional heating in the Winter. I'm sorry that we were not able to get to it prior to this past Summer. And, yes, that curtain rod has been a problem for a while. We will get it replaced. Thank you for your feedback.
The place was beautiful and fun with my friends! I enjoyed the views in the master bed room as well as on the deck. Owner was really nice and answered any questions that i asked in a timely matter. Will 100 percent come back in the future!

About the host
Hosted by Eric Jurgensen
My wife and I are from Pennsylvania and have been visiting this area of Maine for the past 35 years.
Why they chose this property
We love Whetstone Pond and think it is one of the most beautiful ponds in the area. When this property came up for sale, we jumped at the opportunity to buy it and restore it to top shape.
What makes this property unique
The property sits at the point of Whetstone Pond and has possibly the best view of the pond and surrounding mountains. We decided to equip the house with all the latest amenities so that we, and renters, would have the choice of relaxing inside in the manner that modern families have become accustomed to or venturing out for all the activities that beckon in this area of Maine.
