Welcome to Shift Vacation Rentals, a totally remodeled vintage home in one of Portland’s most vibrant neighborhoods, the Alberta Arts District. Designed and created by Encircle Design & Build using reclaimed and local materials and loaded with luxurious touches including radiant floor heat, concrete counters, modern tiles and tons of natural light make this vacation rental a design haven.

The house is a duplex. The upper apartment, high gear, can also be rented for even larger groups, please see vrbo/444951. It’s the perfect home base for wedding parties, reunions, workshops, family getaways, business meetings, etc. Need more room? This is a modern, bright and airy garden-level unit with a large, open living, dining and kitchen area and all the amenities you need (from wifi to coffee grinder) to live, work, entertain and explore Portland.

When you arrive, a large patio with built-in benches, table and comfortable lounge chairs greet you. Inside, an open living room, dining room and kitchen make a perfect place to hang out with family and friends.

Three bedrooms allow for sleeping for 6 people, the couch in the living room or floor futon mattress can be used for extra sleeping space. The first and second bedrooms have comfortable queen beds with mattresses and linens. The third bedroom has two twin beds which can be pushed together to form a queen bed if desired.

This inner Northeast Portland neighborhood is one of the coolest parts of the city. Alberta Street itself is lined with galleries, boutiques, several of Portland’s top restaurants as well as dozens of casual cafés and nightspots. Eat and drink your way down the street from Indian to Italian to Southern, slurping locally crafted coffee, beer and ice cream. Walking distance to several live music venues, a farmer’s market (summer) an organic food co-op and a top-notch restaurants. Minutes from the airport and minutes to downtown make it the perfect home base for an amazing stay in Portland.

Why Michelle Ruber chose Northeast Portland

During our travels we have stayed at many places and began taking note of what we did/or didn't like with our lodgings. Our goal in creating Shift Vacation Rentals is to put together our ideal rental in our ideal city.

We hope you find the artistic, funkiness, ecologically mindedness of Portland in our rental. We partnered with many local businesses and artists in creating the home to give it a look and feel that you won't find elsewhere. A walk down Alberta Street is an experience you will adore.

What makes this house unique

The private sunken patio gives a perfect spot to drink coffee in the morning. Reclaimed materials bring a history and story to the house that make it really special. There is thoughtfulness with all of the details from the paint colors to the lighting all of the items were specifically chosen to make the house beautiful and different.

Fantastic place and location. 8 of us, 4 adults, 4 kids (3 of them ages 1-4) and we shared "Lower Gear". It never felt crowded, very comfortable with enough bedrooms and bathrooms. We loved the contemporary furnishing and artwork. The space worked out great for us. We all enjoyed then outdoor area as well with the kids loving the climbing hut, teeter totter, and we loved grilling and sitting at the picnic table people watching and watching the kids run around. Finally the location was perfect with tons of eating, drinking, and shopping in a few steps either direction. We must have hit the Tin Shed across the street daily (or more :) and every time the food and service was fantastic. Michelle was super responsive and everything was as communicated so it would be hard not to book here again as the spot was ideal and we only scratched the surface after 6 nights of things to see and do.

Beautiful Rental!

My family and I stayed here for several days. The space is very charmingly decorated. It is very clean and comfortable. Located in an interesting neighborhood it was a great place to stay while we visited Portland. There were six of us and there was plenty of room!

Great location, cute place; needs a little love.

Overall, our experience was very good. The location is fantastic! It's along a street filled with restaurants and shops—some rated Portland's best. We loved walking through the neighborhood, and enjoyed a few runs as well. It's a fifteen minute drive to downtown, and Washington Park, which houses a ton of Portland must-sees. The house is cute, and has everything you need. The house is setup great for kids, and even includes toys, highchair and pack-n-play. The only reasons I didn't give it 5 stars are as follows: the beds are not comfortable, and the pillows are terrible, and the twin beds make a lot of noise. I think beds and bedding are important in any vacation rental, so this place fell short in that regard. Also, the internet connection is awful. If you need internet, take a mifi or use your phone as a personal hotspot. And finally, don't do laundry before bed or nap time—the washing machine is super loud. Also, the outside patios need some love. My kids still enjoyed playing out there, but it needs to be cleaned up and maintained a little better. That's it, everything else was grand.

Owner's Response: *I wanted to note we now have a better wifi plan. Seemed the issue was if lots of people were streaming devices at the same time, it was too much pull. We have solved that so that hordes of people can all stream to their hearts content! Also the pillows that we found more worn out have all been replaced. Thanks for taking the time to write a review. I am glad you loved the location and the house. I appreciate your feedback on the washing machine, it was on it's last leg and we have a new one in there now. The bed comfort, is hard to please everyone, as it is so personal as to if one likes firmer or softer. Thankfully most people ask for the mattress info as they like them so much. The wifi we are working with comcast to come up with a better solution, as it should be perfect for everyone. Thanks for letting me know it wasn't working well, I am on it! And yes, after this year of forest fires keeping the exterior clean at all times was a challenge. This Spring we will be power washing the play toys and replacing the exterior matts. We hope that you come stay with us again and see all the items addressed!

Funky, environmental, and friendly!

Everything was clean. There were locally made snacks and a sweet note waiting for us. Whitney responded quickly when I texted her. The book with details and discounts was extremely helpful. We really enjoyed the photo book describing the property. We were close to everything we needed, including the bus stop. Great walking neighborhood. I loved Portland and this house was more than I expected. Thank you!

This was a super comfortable and clean home for our week long stay in Portland.

Loved the location. It was walkable to great shops, restaurants and coffee shops. There's no parking on site, but lots of space available on the side streets. There's a lot of night life happening in this area, so you will hear it if windows are open. We would definitely stay here again.

Is simply perfect. The house sits in the heart of Alberta Street, Portland's most vibrant funky neighborhood. You can walk to a multitude of restaurants, bars, and stores. Inner NE Portland is centrally located so visiting other neighborhoods or going downtown is a few minutes drive. The house is 15 minutes from the airport. There is plenty of free parking on the street. The bus stop is 2 blocks from the house making public transport a breeze.

Five-night stay notice: Generally, when a reservation request includes a weekend, we will require a five-night stay. A possible exception to this is when the dates fall between existing bookings or the requested dates are coming up soon. This five-night requirement will vary depending upon our calendar and booking load. Generally, when booking during low season well in advance or during high season (holidays and summer), we will most likely ask for five-nights minimum. If uncertain if this will apply to your request, please ask! We do not always have the five-night minimum requirement automatically set up in our calendars, which is why not all reservation requests will be accepted. We apologize for any inconvenience!

Owner's Cancellation Policy

  • 50% refund if canceled at least 14 days before arrival date.
  • 100% refund if canceled at least 30 days before arrival date.
  • Service Fee fully refunded on cancellations that qualify for 100% refund.
