YOSEMITE GUEST CABINS & COTTAGE... 'Cozy Comfort for Yosemite Travelers.'

Sunset Inn's two beautiful cabins are located just 2 miles from Yosemite (24 miles from the historic gold-rush town of Groveland), at the Highway 120 west, Big Oak Flat entrance, surrounded by ancient forest at 4,500 foot elevation, tucked away on a lush, private, meadow, far from the crowds, yet in close proximity to all the natural wonders of Yosemite National Park, on an original homestead from 1883.

The two vacation homes are separate properties 4 to 5 miles from Sunset Inn, also situated in the lovely forest, one is on the river, the other on a meadow. All are ideal mountain retreats for a couple, or up to 6 guests.

TWO CABINS AT SUNSET INN...

1. MEADOW LARK BUNGALOW CABIN

This beautiful two-room bungalow cabin is also handsomely designed in the 'Craftsman Style' of fine woodworking. There are 3 beds; a queen in the main room, and a double & a twin bed in the other room. There is a well equipped kitchen and dining area, bathroom with a shower, fan cooling or propane heating, including a gas parlor stove where you can watch the fire. (No wood burning stove in this cabin.) Meadow Lark Cabin is situated over-looking our lovely meadow, with a roomy sun porch, ideal to take in those sunsets for which we are so aptly named. This lovely cabin will accommodate from 2, up to five guests.

2. SUGAR PINE CABIN

This charming 'couples cabin' is attractively designed in a studio layout. The interior is done in the 'Craftsman Style' of custom woodworking. Amenities include a queen size bed, well-equipped kitchen, private bathroom with deluxe shower, fan cooling in summer, or cozy wood burning stove (firewood is provided), as well as propane heat in winter, and inviting sun porch. This lovely cabin is set on the edge of the surrounding forest. Perfect for two guests.

SUNSET INN CABIN AMENITIES

Kitchens are well equipped with a four burner stove top, toaster oven or range oven, coffee maker, and refrigerator, along with pots, pans, dishes, utensils, even dish soap, as well as coffee and tea for you to prepare as you like.

Both cabins have a dining table and chairs or counter with bar stools, and a rocking chair. For entertainment, aside from the great outdoors, your cabin is outfitted with playing cards, board games and puzzles as well as books, magazines and local literature, including park information.

Each cabin has a charcoal barbecue grill. A picnic table is available in our idyllic meadow, along with a swing, sand box, frog pond, and farm yard chickens, for outdoor enjoyment. When they are 'in the mood', our chickens provide delicious eggs for our guests.

Why Lauren Nickell chose Groveland

In 1976 Bill Nickell and Lauren Bauman arranged to rent one of the rustic cabins of the Sunset Inn property, a part of the original Crocker Station 1890s stage stop, were married, and shortly had the good fortune of purchasing the property. While raising our children, many years were spent upgrading and improving the property.

We reestablished Sunset Inn in 1998, and have since thoroughly enjoyed welcoming guests from all over the world to this unique spot.

Sunset Inn has become our home and our heart. The beauty, the tranquility and the peace only found in nature have inspired us to be totally dedicated to our incredible home. Knowing what a wondrous place this is, we thoroughly enjoy sharing it with others.

Decent

  • 3 of 5

The cabin was great and we enjoyed staying at that location. We needed a tomato for cooking and Lauren went out of her way to deliver that to us. She also gave us complimentary eggs.

However, we were asked to stay silent after 9 pm which was a little unusual given that we were on a vacation. If you are renting out cabins, then you should be ready for some noise specially when you are ok entertaining people of all ages. It comes with the territory. Lauren told us to keep it down twice in 10 minutes which was a little annoying. We couldn't enjoy our night, couldn't even laugh. We just had to stay silent.

I wouldn't go back here again with friends.

Owner's Response: It is true, our quite hours are from 9 pm to 9 am, for the consideration of our other guests. However it was not 9 pm when we first asked these guests, who had obviously been enjoying themselves for several hours, to quiet down, it was 1:30 am! After 10 minutes of continued loud noise we asked again, this time they cooperated. Earlier we kept thinking, any minute now they will realize the time and quiet down, but it never happened. We were really surprised as they seemed like considerate folks at check-in. We did our best to accommodate these guests, gave them food, not to mention a special, 'last minute rate'. As my father used to say, "You can please some of the people all of the time, all of the people some of the time, but you just can't please all the people all of the time."

Relaxing oasis

  • 5 of 5

My family and I enjoyed returning to the Sunset Inn each day after our outings in Yosemite. Our well-crafted cabin, the lawn and flowers, the surrounding national forest, the greenhouse and the chicken coop -- it all soothed us. We appreciated the owners' aesthetic and low-key, friendly style.

Beautiful cabin with all the comforts of home

  • 5 of 5

This little cluster of cabins is located just outside of the park and is everything you could want. It is nestled in the woods in a beautiful clearing away from the crowds of the park. However, it's not a very long drive to the park, restaurants or gas. It's rustic and modern at the same time. It allows you to enjoy nature without feeling like you're camping. I'm a city girl and was hoping to enjoy the park without the inconvenience of camping. The cabin had a full kitchen, a clean bathroon, AC and even wifi! The owners were helpful and friendly but not at all intrusive. I would highly recommend this place to travelers!

Great little cabin!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I originally reserved a room in crowded Yosemite Valley to celebrate his 60th Birthday.

We decided to look for something a little more private and "off the beaten path" and Sunset Inn was it!

Although is was a short drive to and from the Park each day (but only a mile or two from the Groveland entrance) it was worth it to settle into our own cabin, prepare our own easy meals and sleep in QUIET!

Lauren and Bill supplied a cooler and blankets for picnics, great linens and a fully stocked kitchen and grill and eggs fresh from their chickens. While certainly not a luxury suite......it was clean, comfortable and perfect for the mountains and we hope to return.

Thanksgiving trip to Yosemite

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed in Sunset Inn over thanksgiving as part of our honeymoon trip. What an amazing place! Sunset Inn was the perfect base for hiking around Yosemite. We spent 2 days hiking around the valley and another day in Hetch Hetchy (massive thanks to Lauren for the advice on the trails!), where we got up close to a mother bear and her cub! After a tough day on the trails it was such a delight to return to our cosy cabin. The cabin was so well equipped with everything you would need and was in an amazing location. Our only regret is that we didn't get to spend more time there! We will definately return to conquer half dome and Sunset Inn will be the first place that we will think of to stay.

A Cabin in the Woods

  • 5 of 5

We are a retired couple who spent 3 October nights in the Larkspur cabin. It was one of the top highlights of our two weeks in San Francisco and Yosemite Park, and well worth it. It was a great place to relax and enjoy nature at her best and is very close to the park entrance. The owners are friendly and work hard to make your Sunset Inn experience enjoyable and comfortable. The cabin was clean, fully stocked with kitchen necessities including a toaster oven and microwave, eating utensils, nice bedding, books and games for a rainy day, a fireplace, a small cooler to use in your car, and even a tour book of Yosemite for your use. It is an ideal place to begin or end your trip to Yosemite!
